Dosage and route of administration• In poultry:

4 mL Levaveto-5 per litre of drinking water.• In pigs:

• In ruminants:0.15 mL Levaveto-5 per kg body weight, without exceeding the dose of 80 mL in cattle and 8 mL in sheep.

• In pigeons: 5 mL Levaveto-5 per litre of drinking water.

Mode of administrationAfter oral administration, the digestive resorption of levam-isole is rapid, the peak plasma concentration is reached in 2 to 4 hours. Levamisole is metabolised at the hepatic level and is eliminated quickly and mainly by the urinary way in the form of metabolites. Levamisole is a nematod-icide of the family Imidazothiazoles. Because of its choli-nomimetic mode of action by binding to the acetylcholine receptors, it acts on the nematode’s nerve ganglions thus causing paralysis.

Immunity enhancing effectLevamisole is known as an immunostimulant (Giambrone and Klesius 1985), that enhances both humoral and cellular immune responses in chickens (Soppi et al. 1979).

1. Stimulation of the immune systemLevamisole stimulates the immune system by enhancing the function of macrophage and T-lympho-cytes, and by decreasing the function of suppressive T cells (Hersey et al. 1981).

2. ProtectionLevamisole has a protective effect on lipid peroxidation (Anderson et al. 1981; Yoshikawa et al. 1982; Gubskii et al. 1989).

3. Increased vacciniation efficiencyLevamisole potentiates vaccination responses in chickens (Giambrone et Klesius, 1985; Steenhard et al., 2009).
