Introducing GGSThe Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (GGS) aims to make high-quality, innovative and policy-relevant contributions to the study of globalization, governanceprocesses and multilateralism with a particular focus on the European Union’s role in global governance. In 2010, the Centre has been recognized as a K.U.Leuven Centre of Excellence. As from 2012, the Centre also acts as the Policy Research Centre of the Flemish Government on International Affairs, International Entrepreneurship andDevelopment Co-operation.

This brochure introduces GGS, its mission statement, management structure, members anddistinguished International Advisory Board. It also provides a brief introduction to two ofour ‘regional’ focuses: the InBev-Baillet Latour EU-China Chair and the Leuven India Focus. As you read through this brochure we hope to give you a flavour of the many high-levelconferences, lectures and seminars GGS organizes.

GGS is a unique venture. Our Centre’s bottom-up dynamics appeal to a great number of colleagues from within and outside the University: with more than 60 senior and juniormembers we now host researchers from law, economics, political science, history, philosophyand area studies. We have attracted numerous research projects at the Flemish, Belgian,European and international levels, and regularly conduct studies for governments, EU institutionsand international organizations. Our output of international publications has been impressive andcontinues to grow. Our events attract ever more attention internationally. We work increasinglywith academic and policy partners from all over the world, including the European Commission,European External Action Service, European Parliament, Committee of the Regions, UNIDO andUNCTAD. As from 2012 the Centre publishes the Leuven Global Governance Series, a series ofmonographs and edited volumes, with Edward Elgar Publishers.

MissionThe Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies is an interdisciplinary research centre of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Leuven.

GGS carries out and supports interdisciplinary research at the University on topics related to globalization, governance processes and multilateralism, with a particular focus on the following areas, taking the many cross-cutting issues into account:• the European Union and global governance• trade and sustainable development • peace and security• human rights, democracy and rule of law• non-state actors and global governance• space governance• comparative federalism.

In full recognition of the complex issues involved, GGS approaches global governance from a multi-level and multi-actor perspective.

In addition to its fundamental research, GGS carries out independent applied research andadvises policy-makers on multilateral governance and global public policy issues. It regularly organizes conferences, seminars and debates on these issues.
