HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIVINGResidents took enthusiastically to a healthy lifestyle carnival happening at Sengkang CC on 28 October. Participants were all ears at an orthopaedic problems talk by Dr Kevin Yip and and a dental talk. And to encourage the matured residents to maintain an active mind, games including Sudoku, Bingo and Rummy-O were played. Participants were also entertained by Indian dance, hip hop dance and folk dance. The health screening and hearing test were the most popular though, drawing throngs of health-conscious residents.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH ART Colouring is loved by all. So, Pasir Ris Elias CC used the activity to bind people together. Called the Project Community Heart Programme, this was the first of a series of community art galleries. About 600 people turned up at the event including residents, grassroots leaders, Nanyang Polytechnic students and Mediacorp artistes. The guest of honour DPM Teo Chee Hean also chipped in to colour the murals. These came with the theme to spread the message to care for people and the environment. Nanyang Polytechnic whipped up yummy yet healthy food such as Eggless Kaya and Curry Chicken with Low Fat Milk for participants to foster healthier eating habits.

KINDNESS GOES AROUNDThe Punggol North Division organized a carnival with the objective to spread kindness and to raise money for the welfare community fund. Free food was given to some 300 Punggol North residents who earned less than $1700 in household income. Needy families received oil, rice, soya sauce, maggi mee, salt, sugar and Milo. Some 800 residents participated in the carnival where exciting programmes abound. Elderly residents participated in a fashion parade, youths danced a Gangnam style number, and an interest group performed a classical Chinese dance. Adelyn, a blind girl played on the piano to raise funds for her operation.

TREE PLANTING CUM MASS CLEANING DAYThe annual tree planting event took place near block 696 Hougang Street 61 this year. MPs from our Pasir Ris-Punggol town took up shovels to plant trees to contribute to the lush greenery surroundings. The MPs then joined volunteers across the town to help pick up litter in the estates. As they turned the residential areas spick and span, it drives home one important message: we can all help to keep the estate clean.

Possess the positive mindset and always say “YES” to the first job which knocks on you...even though that is a temporary job.

Madam Tay, left her former job as a Jackpot Officer in June 2012 due to shift work and the long journey. She approached the Community Development Council for Employment Assistance in end July 2012 and was given several job referrals but in vain till September 2012, she came to know about Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a Job Placement Centre within the North East District is also providing Employment Assistance to unemployed Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents.

In view of Madam Tay had not been working in clerical line for several years, she encountered difficulty in preparing resume, she approached Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for assistance. In deed after the resume was sent out, she was offered a Temporary Clerical job at Serangoon Community Club. This job required her to perform shift duties plus work on weekends. She made no complaints and accepted it.

Luck seemed to shine on Madam Tay after she started the Temporary Clerical job, she managed to secure a Permanent Full Time job as an Admin Assistant with Evershine Services Pte Ltd in November 2102 through Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Team’s assistance. She was very glad and contented because she had finally found a job of what she wants at age of 56.

Follow by, Madam Tok, 35 years old, was another successful applicant with Evershine Services Pte Ltd. She used to be a Studio Assistant Manager and already prepared to lower down her expectation in terms of salary, still found it very hard to secure a normal office hour job in clerical line. By chance, she approached Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for assistance and managed to secure the Admin Assistant job.

THE JOY IS TO SEE PEOPLE BUILD A KITE“

Patrick Tan, resident of Punggol East ditched a general manager post to start his own online kite making business.

Why did you start your own business, in particular kite making?I saw the need for customised kite services because a lot of kites that are available in supermarkets are not well built and won’t last long anyway.

What are the joys you get out of your kite making business? When I hold kite workshops for schools or for events, the joy is to see people build a kite, decorate and fly it-it is different when you make your own kite and fly it. You see a smile on people’s faces.

What prompted you to start your own 3D animation business?A nightmare. I dreamt of myself waking up, in my 40s, still getting my same pay, without any major progress in my life or career. The feeling was horrendous enough to make me start. Coupled with my intentions to start my own games development company, I eventually resigned from my decently well-paid job to set up this company.

What kind of products do you do? Could you tell me more about your business, such as how many people you employ etc.We work on video games. Primarily on PC-based games based on the Windows platform. Video games, depending on its scope, can cover a wide range of sub-industries, such as art, sound, music, video, motion-capture and many others. Currently, we hire freelancers and our team size is roughly around 10 persons.

How old are you and what advantages do you think as a young person you have to become an entrepreneur?I’m currently 32 years old. The foremost advantage as a young person is energy. Being an entrepreneur requires a lot of energy and focus. On top of that, young people have the drive and the guts to dream of the impossible. Though, I do not really believe that having a family as well as kids would seriously affect one being an entrepreneur.

Describe a typical working day for yourself?I wake up around 8am, sending my kids to their respective childcare and infant care centres, then I’ll drive to work. I’ll work till 8pm. Thereafter, I’ll go home, help my wife put my kids to bed; play with them with the little time I have. Then I’ll continue working until 2am. I’ll continue to work on Saturdays and even Sundays if time permits. No gaming, no soccer matches, no EPL, no TV series, no cinemas, no shopping and no dating with my wife.

Who’s the Boss?Jeremy Lee from Punggol West, 32, spills the beans on why he started his own business and the ups and downs of doing it.

A LOT OF ENERGY

AND FOCUS

Why did you start your own business?I used to live in a 3 room HDB flat in Bedok. My dad was a hawker and my mum worked in a factory as a production worker. Things did not add to my advantage when my dad’s business had a cash flow issue and he started borrowing from loan sharks. One day as I was about to leave home for school, I opened the door and to my horror, the door was locked from the outside with a padlock and paint was splashed on my door. Over the next few days, the fear lingered as the debtors would come pounding on our doors. My dad eventually wound down his business and my parents were separated. Till today, I could never figure out, how my mother managed to bring up both my brother and I with a $600 pay cheque. So I started my own business as I want to be in control of my destiny.

Why do you want to start a web developing company?Application programming and multimedia know-how were probably the only skills I have been equipped with when I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic. Being a low barrier business to start, it was the path of least resistance for me.

What were some hardships your company or you went through when you first started Edifice?I remembered telling my then, girlfriend that I want to start my own business. She asked me, “How much do you have?” I replied: “$2,000.” With an unsupportive tone, she replied, “What can you do with that?” I incorporated my company officially one week before I completed my national service, providing web design services for companies. I worked from home using a second hand laptop. I also decided to pay myself $500 per month. And I told

myself that if I can survive with $190 a month from my NS (National Service) allowances, $500 a month is more than a 100% pay increment! The fact was I only withdrew $500 in three months because I had everything I want from home. I travel in buses.

Would you say you have improved your standard of living since you became a businessman? In what ways?Over the years the one-man show (my company) grew into a 10-men team with some of the best designers and reliable programmers. I have also started two other new businesses, in mortgage brokering and in property investment. Just three months ago, I was also awarded the promising SME 500 award at Marina Bay Sands and my latest milestone at 32 years of age was the recent purchase of a commercial office in Orchard Road.

To sum it up, although there are certain things we can’t choose such as our financial situation or family, all you need is the right mindset and when you mix it with hard work, miracles happen.

Eddie Lee, Punggol Central resident and chief architect of web branding company, Edifice is a clear example, growing from a one man company owner to a SME 500 Platinium Award winner.

THEY SAY ENTREPRENEURS CREATE MIRACLES

Compared to what you were doing previously how do you feel? When I am conducting kite workshops, it is an extension of my passion. Before this, I was a general manager, I had to travel often and I found it stressful.

What are your plans for your business?I designed a light weight kite that flies indoors, in big hallways. I called it iFlite. I hope to improve the production system of iFlite kites so that they can be made more efficiently and manufacture more of them.

Who’s the Boss?Ever dreamt of becoming your own boss? Vibes talks to three residents to find out what why they started their own business and what keeps them going.

Boxes for flyersHere is a new idea to help us keep our corridors clean and tidy. Inspired by some residents who have been collecting flyers in a basket at their front gate; the Town Council is giving out a handy flyer-collection box where residents can keep and then remove flyers from one place. A pilot project has started at several blocks, and we heard that they are rather popular! Some creative residents even drew on their boxes to give it a personal touch. We can look forward to receiving the box this year as the project rolls out gradually to every household in town.

My friends and I went to Hong Kong in September with food and shopping uppermost on our minds but came back with more adventures to tell than we expected.

On the first day, we visited Lantau Island to gawk at the majestic Tian Tan Buddha statue, climbing 268 steps just to scrutinize the Buddha statue. When we hobbled to the top, the mountain and sea vistas took our breath away.

We also took the opportunity to visit old time favourite, Ocean Park. The latest attraction, Polar adventure made our heart beats quicken with a bob sled ride, the meeting of long-tusked Pacific walruses and the amusing sight of more than 70 penguins frolicking on ice. We also screamed ourselves hoarse on roller coaster rides, and stuck

our eyes in front of aquariums of diverse species of gold fish.

Leaving the main island, we went to Cheung Chau to experience laidback country life and for a slurp of tang zai congee, an amalgamation of pig intestines, and seafood, of “slide down your throat“ consistency. Then we went to Lan Kwai Fong to immerse in the modern night convivial lifestyle, soaking up the pub scene and tucking into international fare. For a taste of fresh seafood, we also ventured to Stanley Market which gives a beautiful view of the South China seas.

Finally, we took deep breaths and plunged into shopping at Causeway Bay checking out Times Square and SOGO Department Store. For dried seafood, we trawled Wing Lok Street and Bonham Strand West.

On food sampling, we made it a point to go to a Hong Kong style Teahouse to sip Stocking Milk Tea, warm pineapple bun with a lump of butter slipped into it. At Dai Pai Dongs (Hong Kong’s open air street stalls) we ate chao mien, stir fries

and sizzling plates. Lastly, we also went yum cha eating snack sized portions of dim sums the likes of cheung fan, barbecued pork bun and shaomai.
