Dear Glencoe Families,
The week before Spring Break, Glencoe received
some good news. We will be one of the next ten
schools in the district to adopt the new K-5 lan-
guage arts curriculum. As part of this cohort we
will be receiving on-going professional develop-
ment, appropriate assessment materials and new
curriculum to effectively implement a reading
and writing workshop in each classroom. In ad-
dition, we will have the minimum of a half-time
instructional coach on site (provided by the dis-
trict) to work closely with us as we strengthen our
instructional practices and effectively utilize the
curriculum. I am excited for this opportunity; all
of which will benefit our students as they learn
and grow as readers and writers.
As you know, today is now an instructional day
for students, rather than a teacher planning day, to
help recuperate some of our lost instructional
minutes from January. With the loss of this teach-
er planning day comes an agreement between
PPS and PAT, the teacher’s union, to eliminate
completed report cards for students this 3rd quar-
ter. The only exceptions to this is if a student’s
academic and/or behavioral achievement has
“significantly declined” from his/her 2nd quarter
marks or in the case of high schools, are at risk of
failing. Our students with IEPs will continue to
receive a progress report from the SPED service
provider (Mr. Tibbetts, Mrs. Orchard, Mrs.
Schneider Barnes or Mr. Lahart). This was unset-
tling for many of our teachers as they feel strong-
ly about communicating with families about stu-
dent progress. Please let me know if you have
further questions about this district agreement.
Before break I sent an email explaining how re-
ductions to our state and district budgets will im-
pact Glencoe. We did not receive any additional
FTE, as I had hoped. So, our reduction of -3.4
FTE (full time equivalent staff) stands and re-
quires changes to our current staffing structure.
Our staffing allocation will allow us to simply
meet what PPS has described as minimum core
requirements next year for a K-5 school with less
than 700 students. In order to develop an effective
program for next year I worked from the following
principles:
Students remain at the center of the decisions
Importance of low class size
Effective delivery of core content in the class-
room is crucial
Preservation of classroom teachers to effec-
tively deliver the core content
Supports for our struggling students
Maximize instruction and exposure to the arts
(plus, what arts can be delivered/supported
through current resources/partnerships?)
Maximize full time positions for consistency
of adult supports and programming
Based on these principles and minimum core re-
quirements, here is what you can expect at Glen-
coe:
18 classrooms: three sections at each grade K-
3, two 4th grade classes, one 4th/5th blended
class and three 5th grade classes.
Class sizes will be close or slightly above 30
students in most grades
Half-time PE (remains the same)
Full time music (eliminating half time art pro-
gram & moving a current classroom teacher to
full time music)
Half-time library (staffed by a Teaching Li-
brarian and eliminating a library assistant)
Full time counselor (no more guidance classes
as currently designed) and
1 principal (no assistant principal)
This is a challenging situation and it pains me to
say that many people on staff are effected in vary-
ing ways. These reductions and program designs
impact a number of our staff who will be assigned

Walk Audits with Oregon Walks & SRTS
Need an opportunity to provide feedback? You got it! Attend a
walk audit at select schools to discuss barriers & routes close to
school - don't forget your walking shoes and all your great ide-
as. Expect walk and discussion to last about one hour.

Glencoe’s Chess Club
The Glencoe Chess Club had six players
(Sean Dauch, Charlie Droege, Eliyo Ely,
Hank Gullung, William Jordan, Andrew
Metz) compete in the 50th Anniversary
Chess for Success State tournament. Dur-
ing the Friday team competition, Glencoe
took home the 2nd place trophy by win-
ning 4 out of 5 team matches. On Satur-
day, all 6 members were back for individ-
ual competition where Andrew won 4
straight matches before losing in the final
round and tying for 2nd place. Congratu-
lations to the entire team on a very suc-
cessful season.
Robotics Championship
At March 19th’s robotic pets competi-
tion, Glencoe's club were the overall
champions, with their team scoring the
most points per participant!
State Testing:
In the next few weeks, 4th and 5th grade
students will begin participating in the
Oregon Statewide Assessments
(Smarter Balanced) and 3rd graders
will begin testing in May. All grade
levels will be taking the ELA (English
Language Assessment) and Math tests.
The 5th graders will also be taking the
OAKS Science Test. Classroom teach-
ers will let families know what days
their class will be testing. You can
help your child be the most prepared
by promoting a good night’s sleep,
making sure they eat a healthy break-
fast, and staying positive and encour-
aging them to give their best effort. If
you have any questions about the test-
ing, you can ask your child’s class-
room teacher or call or e-mail me at

A Word From Your Teacher-Librarian, Mrs. EFB -
Oregon Battle Of the Books - Congratulations to the Junior
Authors: Frankie Silverstein, Ruby Jane Rippetoe, Jodie
Coughlin, and Caroline Bederka. The Junior Authors took 1st
Place at our Glencoe Library OBOB then went on to compete
at our Glencoe hosted Region 4NW competition on Saturday,
March 18th. Out of 61 teams, The Jr. Authors battled to 2nd
place and are 1 of 3 teams who will represent our region at
the OBOB State Competition on April 8, 2017!
Congratulations also to The Reading Rascals: Sean Dauch,
Sofia Gonzalez, Luci Kennedy-Wong, Zack Michaels, and
Finn Halligan who placed 2nd in our Glencoe Library
OBOB. This is the 2nd year The Reading Rascals have
placed in Glencoe OBOB's top 2!
All of our Glencoe Library teams rock! Each team has read
a combined 16 books, expanded their repertoire of genres and
authors, engaged in deep conversations about literature, and
made new and lasting friendships!
This year, for the first time, Glencoe ES hosted the Region
4NW Oregon Battle of the Books, the largest battle in the
state of Oregon. There were 61 teams and approximately 275
players along with 70 coaches. There was an estimated 950-
1,000 in attendance. Special thanks to the Glencoe parents
and staff, who along with 128 volunteers made this event pos-
sible.
The mission of the Oregon Battle Of the Books is to en-
courage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden
Ready, Set…Run For The Arts!!
Run for the Arts 2017 is officially under-
way! This is a great opportunity for kids
and parents to raise money and directly
contribute to the budget deficit our school
is facing. Let's exceed the 38K that was
raised last year! Sponsor sheets were hand-
ed out on Wednesday, April 5th and stu-
dents have almost 3 weeks to collect spon-
sors before the run on April 28th. Please
turn in sponsor sheets to your teachers no
later than April 25th (no money yet). Don't
forget to select a t-shirt size and sign the
sponsor sheet.
There are two exciting changes this year:
1) This year, we are encouraging all stu-
dents to have at least 13 sponsors. Having
13 sponsors or at least $20 in pledges quali-
fies each student for a t-shirt. This will re-
place the lap/sponsor calculations on the
front of your form.
2) There is a new online donation option
reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, to pro-
mote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learn-
ing and teamwork among students.
Mission Accomplished! Mrs. EFB (aka, Elaine Ferrell-Burns)

full-time music position. Within the next few weeks you can
expect to see additional communications about program de-
signs and teaching assignments for next year.
Many of you at the informational staffing meeting for par-
ents and this month’s PTA meeting asked what parents could
do to advocate for adequate funding and FTE for Glencoe.
The district is holding budget listening sessions starting next
week and they want to hear from parents across the district.
I believe you can sign-up to speak at the sessions. Feel free
to attend one of the upcoming Board listening sessions:
April 11 – 6 p.m., Madison High School, 2735 NE 82nd
Ave., Portland, OR 97220.
April 24 – 5 p.m., Blanchard Education Service Center,
501 N. Dixon St., Portland, OR 97227
May 9 – 5 p.m., Blanchard Education Service Center
In regards to advocating for the larger picture of educational
funding, please connect with one of our PTA board members
who can provide you with contacts at the state/legislative
levels.
Warm Regards,
Lori Clark
