The DirectorNIT Delhi

Problems faced by the students of NIT-Delhi.

Respected sir,

These are the major problems faced by the students of all years. Through this letter we want to suggest you the following amendments in the Administrative system of NIT-Delhi.

1. Formation of Student Body Council. It was promised to the students that a student committee would be formed to look into the interests of the college students. But there isn’t any positive step taken from the college regarding this issue.

2. Mark sheets and Grading Systemi. No mark sheets have been issued till date.

b. The system of grading still isn’t transparent and many students have faced injustice in the grades that they have been awarded both in the lab exams and the theory papers. The deserving students have been given inferior grades as compared to others by the faculty when it was the M. Tech. students who took the viva exams for the labs and not the faculty teachers. The basis of this grading method has to be made transparent.

i. Discrepancy in the grades displayed in ERP.ii. Separate grading system for common subjects for different branches.

3. Budget AllocationDetails of funds allocated to the college must be transparent to all the students and funds should be allocated to all the clubs at the start of the year itself. The process of allocation of the funds must be made clear by the administration.

4. T&P CellWe need a proper and transparent working of the T&P cell and need a full time appointed Institutional relations officer appointed as TPO and he shouldn’t have any other burdens of academics etc. And all the details of the students been placed must be updated regularly in the college website. There is a need for training and placement policy which should be finalized after discussing with students.

5. Re-Mid’sThe students who submitted CMO application must be allowed to give Re-mid’s.

6. Medical InsuranceThe students have not been provided any kind of medical insurance, despite medical fees being included in the college fees. This issue has been raised many times, every time ending in the yet-to-be-fulfilled promises.

7. Deans MonopolyNo transparency in the system and rules are being applied in the college according to their convenience without providing prior information to the students.

8. The compulsion of 75% attendance.Further extending the classroom problems from the previous point, the ruleIf a student wants to participate in any extra co-curricular activity like workshops, or if his/her

health gets poor for that matter, he/she has to manage all that within the remaining 25% window.

9. Research Projects.Student training projects should be started during the summer vacations so that the enthusiastic students are given the opportunity to work under the guidance ofexpert faculty for their research projects.

10. InternshipsAs it is given academic curriculum it is a must for the college to provide the chances or opportunities for the students to grab Industrial Training. The internship programs if provided by the college can equip the students with the industrial know-how which is essential in today’s scenario. There are many students in the college who are not able to grab a summer training program on their own, due to lack of facilities and exposure in their dwelling area, and/or their weak base in industrial know-how. Thus, they need such facilities in the college campus itself as are provided in other NITs and IITs.

11. Improvisation of labsThe labs of the college lack the essential equipment necessary to carry out the experiments. Also, the enthusiastic students are not allowed to carry on extra experiments except at their scheduled time.

12. Development of soft skillsWorkshops and events should be held in the college for the students on themes like public speaking, personality development, body language etc. these softs skills will help the students stand out and perform better later on in their careers.

13. Scholarships The name of NIT DELHI does not feature in the list of institutes eligible for scholarships such as SBI Scholarships, UP scholarships. Also, the students cannot avail subsidies on railway and bus fares because NIT DELHI not being on the list of subsidy recipients. Merit based scholarships should be provided to students so as to acknowledge their efforts and encourage them to perform better.

14. Extra co-curricular activities and sportsFunding: Students are not able to participate in the inter college events due to the lack of funds from the college’s side.Attendance: The absence owing to participation in inter college events is included in the 25% window which is inadequate for students.Proper recognition should be given to the organisers, as often the efforts of club volunteers/members go underappreciated.Sports facilities:Facilities such as gym and courts should be provided by the college so that the students can practice and perform well in the inter college sports festsThis facility has been asked for many a times but not yet provided

15. Bus pass and train subsidiesNIT Delhi doesn’t have any concession form which will be helpful in providing subsidies for students in trains and buses. While students of other central governing institutes have been provided with various facilities and subsidies in trains and bus.

16. Students fund Rs.1000/- is collected every year and we need to know for what purpose it is being used for.

17. Expulsion:We need to know on what grounds the 6 students have been expelled from the college.

18. Mental harrassment of the students must be stopped immediately .

Hostel Problems:Girls:

The time wasted and physical and mental tiredness in daily travelling from hostel to college results in inadequate time for studies. Moreover we are not able to participate in the extra-curricular activities like sports and cultural events due to the fact that we are unable to coordinate with other participants as there is lack of free time in college.

Also we have to come to the college for the whole day even if we have few classes. If we have a test when we are ill, even then we have to stay in the college for the whole day.

Cabs need to be provided so that we can leave the college when classes are over. No medical facilities in spite of the fact that we are being charged for it. Rest room cannot accommodate all the girls and it doesn’t have even have adequate

facilities for half of all the total girls’ strength. Very weak Wi-Fi facility in the hostel. We have to pay Rs.50/- for lunch in the hostel if we miss the college despite being the

fact that we are already paying in the college. Air Conditioned buses need to be provided for the transportation as the daily

temperatures are unbearable in the summer. We are being charged extra in electricity bill for using electrical appliances such as

cooler etc. despite being the fact that we have already paid the electricity bill in the initial hostel fees amount of Rs 10000/-.

Common problems of boys and girls:

Poor Wi-Fi facility Facilities such as computer system, printer, and photocopy machine should be provided.

Concerns of M.Tech Students:

1. Thesis internship should be approved2. There hasn’t been any noticeable action for M.Tech placement.3. Hostel haven’t been provided for M.Tech students.4. Lab-system haven’t been assigned.5. Special industrial trips/educational tours haven’t been organized so far.

Safety

a. The area of our hostel, and the road to college from Harish Chandra Hospital, are unsafe for students.

b. The concerned authorities may be aware of the cases of mobile snatching that occasionally take place on the college road.

Yours sincerely,

All the students NIT Delhi (B.Tech & M.Tech)
