Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981)

Among the great figures in animated film, Lotte Reiniger stands alone. No one else has taken a

specific animation technique and made it so utterly her own. (Kemp, 2010)

This single statement says it all about Lotte. Lotte and her work have cast a very long shadow to

which is still visible today. Her work is unmatched by any in her field. One could also argue that

she is the Grandmother of the silhouette. Lotte would continue to work all the way to her finalfew years. She never lost her touch, even in her 80s.

With over 40 films and shorts to speak of, there have been many that

have been successful and many that always pop up when ever her

name is mentioned. So of which include ,Aladdin And The Magic Lamp

(1954) and The Adventures Of Prince Achmed, (1926).

Aladdins imigery is very skilfully put

together and runs very smoothly. The

very little narrative it has tells the

story well, in the way in which it

brings all the parts of what is going on

together to form a very solid

performance.

Price Achmed, likes Aladdin is put

together very nicely. However the details

in which it has are almost breathe taking.

One can tell at first glance that the one

whom made t must very skilled and

dedicated to her work.

Even today, when one views a bit of her work, they are always pleasantlysurprised.

Modern audiences seem to have an aversion to viewing silhouette animation,

until they've seen the films of Lotte Reiniger. Even her later films, produced for

television in the 1950s and noticably less sophisticated than her early work,

possess a pure cinematic magic that is present in the work of very few animators.In all likelihood, there will never be a silhouette animator who will match

Reiniger's skill, vision, and patience, and her films may well remain a unique

testament to the potential achievements of the artform. ( Larson, 1999)

The Shadow she has cast will go on for quite a while longer with the achievements

she accomplished and how far she pushed her art form and indeed making it herown. She will always be highly rated among the top animators of the past and the

present.
