A Letter From the EditorWelcome to the Winter Edition of Let’s Go! Guide... IT’S CHRISTMAS!

Before I start I would like to thank all of the local primary schools and businesses that hand out Let’s Go! Guide. We appreciate how busy you are, but still make sure everyone receives a copy.

We would also like to thank ALL of the businesses big and small that advertise with us and offer some great discounts to our readers. A BIG THANKYOU from all of the team at Let’s Go Media Limited. We are already on the way to filling our Spring Issue due out March 2015, so get in touch if you would like to advertise your business direct to families 0800 542 5873.

Once again we have packed YOUR

family magazine full of exciting things to do and places to go.

In this feature we introduce you to 3 young people whom we are sponsoring and supporting. Harry Walford, Ice Skater, Brioni Crowe, Musician and Archie Brown, Karate. You will be able to follow their stories throughout 2015. All photographed by Jo Smith from Jo’s Photos.

The Box Troll Competition was a HUGE success and there were some fantastic entries, so many in fact we had to give two runner up prizes! Turn to page 21 to see ‘STRING’ created by 12 year old, Mya Lowe. Congratulations to our runners up Keely Hawes, age 11 and Mimi Lall age 4.

Christmas is a time for excitement and whilst the little ones wait for Father Christmas to come, perhaps you could pass some time making some Gorgeous Christmas Cookies, then hang them on the Tree, see page 18.

Why not come and join us on Facebook to see who has what on offer weekly https://www.facebook.com/LetsGoGuideHQ

There are many people that drift in this world and live day by day or work hard at what they do, but don’t seem to know where they want to go, they are just “going with the flow”. Is this like you? Setting goals is a common practice among some of the most successful people on this planet. Deciding to strive for goals can actually change your life and help you take charge. Developing and aspiring to a goal can help you focus and begin the process of achieving the life you want. Here’s some personal tips to help you get started with your goals and hopefully inspire you to take action:

8 Steps to setting personal goals that will inspire you to take action in 2015

Deciding exactly what you want is always the first step. But what if you don’t know what you want? Being able to really pin point a goal you need clarity. Ask yourself, is there something you need or want more of in your life? Take a risk -don’t be afraid of asking BIG - but stay realistic! Get a set of felt pens and paper – a page each for goals to do with finances, career, relationships, health or any desire that you feel right for yourself. Score each goal 1-10 where 10 is very important and 1 not very. You may be able to talk to a friend or partner at this stage to help clarify your thinking .Of those really important goals, prioritise one goal that will make a significant difference to your life. Take your time over this- this stage is crucial.

Decide what it is that you really want1.

Write your goal down! When you write down your goals that connects you to your goals. Write down what you want and list the steps you are going to need to take to achieve it. Tell somebody about your goal, get support from a friend. Now make a start! Take one step at a time! Make progress. Stay positive. Encourage yourself to continue. “If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.” -Bruce Lee

Write your goal down, tell somebody and

start now2.

Break it down3.Some people seem to give up on goals because they don’t know where to begin. Days pass, weeks pass, and the goal fades into another dream. This is why many people procrastinate; they don’t know where to start. Here is the solution, as you write down your goal, consider the steps you need to make to get there. Think of it as a journey .You could use post- it notes to list the steps and to put them in order. Number them from 1 to 10 or whichever way helps you determine which steps

to take first. You may even break those steps down again into even smaller steps. That way you can have a clear route map to your goal. As you make each step, tick it off your list. Be persistent and don’t start on the next step until you are finished with the first.

set a timescale4.Most people will tell you to set a realistic timescale to work towards your goal. This is good advice. Make sure you set yourself up for success – ask yourself “When can I realistically achieve this?” It doesn’t matter if your deadline isn’t right where you set it at first – you can reassess and adjust if necessary. Keep going and keep making progress!

How to stay motivated5.With this hectic world it’s easy to get caught up and forget about your goals or even drop the whole idea. To get through this, sit somewhere quiet and imagine your goal when you’ve reached it. What can you see, how does it feel and what can you hear? Now, hold that feeling for a couple of seconds or minutes. Feels great right? Use this to inspire and motivate yourself, remind yourself why it is so important to you and notice the progress you have already made. “Visualize this thing that you want, see it, feel it, believe in it. Make your mental blue print, and begin to build.” -Robert Collier

Learn how to take a break and relax6.Even though you’re doing well with your list and getting closer to your goal, it’s ok to take a break. Give your mind and body some time off. A day or two is fine. This will allow you to re-energise for the next steps ahead. Just make sure when you do, leave everything alone. Relax, enjoy being in the moment. Give yourself a worry holiday– decide how long your holiday will be- one or two days would be ideal - and just let go. Start again with renewed vigour!

Project YOU brings together all the proven elements of successful personal, professional and relationship goal achievement. This inspiring, supportive and positive one day workshop, led by experienced NLP Master Practitioner and confidence coach Carol Hargreaves, is aimed at women who want to ring the changes in the new year.

The day’s four sessions are carefully structured and each individual will feel fully supported in taking the essential steps to identifying key personal aspirational goals that will make a real difference to your life when achieved in 2015.

But here’s where Project YOU is really different. To inspire great goal setting Carol will coach you to break your goals down into achievable chunks, identify a realistic timescale, take real ownership and make a personal commitment to achieve your goals. Carol will invite you to step up your confidence and dare you to want the best for yourself. In addition she will coach personal effectiveness skills that will enable success to happen for you.

build in a safety net7.Fear of failure is a feeling that most people experience sometimes. It can prevent people from going after what they want. They want to stay in the safe zone, would rather be safe than sorry. Or, after faltering in their journey to achieve their goal they give up too easily because they fear it will be too difficult and they will fail. I always advise people to build in a safety net when goal setting. Ask yourself, “What happens if things don’t go to plan?” and give yourself the opportunity to stay on track even though there may be setbacks at times.“There is no such thing as failure, only feedback” is my favourite pre-supposition from NLP. This works well for me – and if a goal doesn’t go quite to

celebrate8.

plan, I can be gentle [not critical] with myself, learn something from the feedback and recognize that something needs to be different. The best feeling is to emerge out of that and come back 10 times stronger.

Share your successes along the way! Reward yourself when you successfully complete each step and especially when you have achieved fully and completely what you set out to achieve.

My name is Harry, I am 12 years old. I am a figure skater, I started skating 3.5 years ago, I was invited to a friend’s party and I didn’t want to get off the ice, I asked my mum if I could go again the next week, and that is where the love for the ice began.

I quickly enrolled in the Skate UK courses that run for 4 weeks at a time and each 4th week you get tested and moved up a level, I went through this programme very quickly and moved from Skate UK to private lessons, It was then I chose my coaches Dan and Vycki Nicholson, I chose Dan as I wanted a male coach and he always had lots of smiley students, and I got 2 for 1 as he was married to Vycki who also teaches skating.

At first I skated at the weekends, very soon after I would ask if I could go after school to practice, and before I knew it I was training before school and after school 6 days a week. I moved through my levels very quickly and loved the excitement of test day and moving up to the next level.

Over the last few years I have won lots of in house competitions within our Figure club, which has really helped boost my confidence, I was lucky enough to achieve the Great Britain regional development pathway plan in this time. This is a fantastic achievement that I am very proud of.

I have won awards through the Blackpool sports awards, and have been lucky enough to receive sponsor money from the Swallodale Children’s trust, Ben trend foundation and the Rob George foundation. This money has helped me with my training and has allowed me to travel to Scotland over the last 18 months on 4 occasions and train with Senior British Champion Jenna McCorkell and Senior British Male champion Matt Parr, amongst other talented skaters in the country; this for me was the best training programme, enabling me to see so much talent under one roof, really pushes me to be the best I can be.

I have recently been making bracelets from Parachute chord , I came up with the idea that if I made bracelets I could sell them and the money would help me save towards Skate camp in April in Scotland, with the help of the Lets Go Guide we have managed to raise over half of the money needed.

Over the next 12 months my plan is to continue training as much as I am and get ready to start competing next year, I have some tests due in the next few weeks which are important and put me in line for my goals for 2015, which are to compete across the country and hopefully qualify for the British Figure skating Championship in November 2015.

I currently train at the Fylde coast Ice Arena in Bispham, I am there most mornings and afternoons for training, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

If you would like to follow my progress please find me on Facebook Harry Walford or on twitter @harrywalford.

I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Debra at the Lets Go Guide for believing in me and helping me maintain my training programme I am on at present, and also my coaches Dan & Vycki for putting up with me .

Gingerbread Festive Biscuits

Method1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F2. Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda & ginger together into a large mixing bowl.3. Rub the fat into the dry ingredients to form a breadcrumb consistency, then stir in the sugar.4. Add the syrup & egg & mix to form a firm smooth dough.5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to approximately 5mm thickness. Cut out various shapes using festive cookie cutters.6. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden, cool on a wire rack.7. Boil the apricot jam with a little water to thin it out & pass through a sieve to remove any lumps.8. Using a pastry brush, coat the biscuits with a little apricot jam. Then dust a clean work surface with icing sugar & roll out the sugarpaste to approximately 3mm thick. Use the cookie cutters to cut icing shapes & lay on to the jam coated cookies.9. Use the coloured icing tubes to write festive messages or names onto the cookies.

The cookies can be placed in bags & tied with ribbon, use as name place favours or stocking fillers. You can cut a small hole at the top of each cookie before baking & simply thread with ribbon, then use as tree decorations.

The 2014 competitive season has come to an end for Archie and what a year it has been. He has achieved a total of 4 golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronze medals from 9 national competitions as well as representing GB in his first international competition in Japan earlier this summer.

Since the last issue of Let’s Go Guide, the TKF Nationals were held in London where he gained the title of National Kumite Champion after an exciting 4 rounds, including 1 against a member of the Sardinian national squad. At the BSKI’s he achieved gold in kata and bronze in kumite and later he competed in the Ayrshire Open Championships and came away with gold for kata, proving himself to be great at both kata and kumite!

The trials for the 2015 TKF Great Britain Squad were also held at the beginning of November and Archie secured his place in the kumite squad for the second successive year. He will continue to train on both the Wirral and occasionally London to prepare for all the competitions available to him, including The US Open being held in Las Vegas in April.

Archie got a taster of his first red carpet awards ceremony at the Rock FM’s Time to Shine awards. He was runner up for Outstanding Sporting Achievement. In December he will be attending his second awards evening for the Blackpool Gazette’s All Stars Awards, where he has been nominated for the ‘Outstanding Individual of Primary School Age’.

The last few months has seen Archie commit to his training even more by moving to a dojo in Liverpool to be trained full time by GKR National coach and TKF Great Britain coach, Sensei Pete Watson. This will allow Archie to learn shotokan karate as well as his original goju-ryu and will stand him in excellent stead for the 2015 season.

Archie does not receive any government funding and so relies upon privately raised resources to train and compete. He has huge opportunities in 2015 but many will be dependant upon sponsorship. If anyone would like to sponsor Archie and help a future sports star, please contact him on [email protected]. To keep up to date with Archie’s news, please give him a like and a follow at www.facebook.com/archiebonsai and Twitter @archiebonsai. His website is also regularly updated: http://www.archiebonsai.co.uk

Brioni has many hobbies, she loves the outdoors and is always on the go, but her passion lies within her love of playing her piano, her piccolo and her first instrument, her flute. This all started when she was 5 on a keyboard… now she is an 11 year old gifted young musician…

Brioni is a college student at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She started training there at the young age of 10 whilst being a pupil at Anchorsholme Primary School. Now she attends weekly as well as going to senior school and claims it is the highlight of her week! In 2013, Brioni was given a place in the National Orchestra of Scotland. She was not only the youngest in the ensemble, but also the only one from

England. The Orchestra played for the Royal family and had successful year of concerts around the UK. This was a huge achievement for Brioni as it was not only her first time performing on a national stages, it was her first ever experiences of residential boarding school placements during training.

2014 got off to a flying start for this young musician. In April, Brioni left the National Orchestra of Scotland to take up a place with the National Wind Sinfonia of Great Britain. This tremendous achievement meant that Brioni was now based more in London than in Scotland and she spent many weeks rehearsing and performing down south throughout the spring and the summer months. The highlight of the summer for Brioni was performing at The Proms at The Royal Albert Hall and

Page | 26www.letsgoguide.co.uk | [email protected]

Page 27: Let'sgoguide winter

working with the English National Youth Ballet to compose pieces of music. Brioni was also announced the Young Musician of the Year for 2014. Her hard work, dedication and commitment has really paid off.

Music has given Brioni confidence and a passion to share this with others. Closer to home, Brioni is a member of the BMS Concert Band and has recently become a board member for the committee of BMS. The Concert Band are currently planning there next European tour for 2015, where they will be playing at many venues in Spain. Even though she is only 11 years old, to become a member of the committee and represent BMS has been one of her proudest moments. She is so thankful to the music service – if it wasn’t for the opportunities she had at the young age of 5, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

“Thank you so much for supporting me! I love music and I am so fortunate

to have had these wonderful opportunities! I am now looking forward to new challenges ahead and hopefully representing my country again!! Now that I am a committee member for BMS, I want to inspire young people to get involved and have a go! Music is fun and it brings everyone together, why not come along and see for yourself! I hope to be playing nationally again soon – thank you to Debra for supporting me in this and helping BMS help children just like me.” - Brioni

Brioni is now eagerly awaiting to find out what is in store of 2015. Shortly the finalists are announced for the national platforms of 2015 and Brioni has her fingers crossed she is successful! Watch this space!

Brioni is also looking for sponsors to help her participate in National events. If any local businesses are interested in helping this rising star then please get in touch via Let’s Go!

Brioni and her family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Let’s Go Guide for their continued support and encouragement in helping a young lady achieve her dreams.

Blackpool Music Service (BMS) was established in 2002. It has received 8 national awards including that of Music Service of the Year from the Nation Music Council in 2011. Three years ago it then became the lead organisation for the Blackpool Music Education Hub.

The purpose of the service was to reintroduce music-making into Blackpool Schools but it has since extended far beyond the provision of educational support. Last year all Blackpool Schools were supported by this service provision. The 30 music peripatetic teachers delivered up to 20 hours of instrumental and vocal tuition in every school every week and this then supported school ensembles and choirs. In addition, 96% of Primary schools received free Wider Opportunities for their Year 4 children. This initiative offers free instrumental loan to all children and free class tuition for one year. Both the free Wider Opportunities and free loan we believe is unique to Blackpool.

After the Wider Opportunities initiative musicians are encouraged to take short term, achievable music medals and external music examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music or, Trinity and Guildhall Schools of Music. The results from the higher grades can then be used to assist older musicians to get into University. This has been so in 2014 where 9 of musicians moved on to taking music degrees. This quantity and display of quality is new for Blackpool but also highlights the fact that music is not just a social, interactive hobby but also a very worthy vocation. Further evidence of our students standards are best acknowledged by the fact that we now have Blackpool musicians playing in 6 national ensembles and bands. This again is a first and, highlights the excellent standard of our bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles who rehearse every week throughout the borough. There are no charges for students who attend these rehearsals but there is an expectation that they will improve

on a weekly basis. Those who are most successful are then invited to a bi-annual Youth Concert Band Spanish Tour.

However, it is essential that all children have the opportunity to experience music making in Blackpool. Consequently we have numerous annual competitions and festivals for all. Our festivals often include professional musicians such as those from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Africa’s Batani Band, The Voices Foundation and many others. Recent events have included performances with Russell Watson, The Voice, Children in Need, Britains Got Talent and then more local events such as Schools Alive, Au Revoir, our Christmas Festival, Showcases and local events in virtually every musical genre.

Often, the question for most parents is when to start teaching their son or daughter. Now there is no concern because in 2011 we introduced Tiddley-om-pom-poms an wonderful singing, music-making and movement programme which has been introduced to almost every pre-school educational setting in Blackpool. This is great fun for young children to learn new words, colours, to socially interact with other young children whilst under the supervision of their parents, grand-parents or carers.

What ever the age, Blackpool children have the opportunity to be engaged in music making from birth. More than 20,000 children perform on prestigious stages such as those at The Winter Gardens, Grand Theatre or Tower Ballroom and many are now making music a career.

But this isn’t cheap and fund-raising is essential. We have introduced opportunities for Patron’s to donate £50 - £100 per annum and for parents and the general public to make small, monthly payments. Sponsors too would be welcome and the opportunity to support so many children whilst enjoying music-making is something many would regard as worthwhile.

We are thrilled to have the Let’s Go Guide as a patron and look forward to have them supporting and following our exciting events in 2015
