LET’S MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER, GREENER PLACE FOR TOMORROW…

FACT: In 2006, 26 billion bottles were sent to landfills, ended up in oceans or got incinerated. In landfills, they take 400 to 1000 years to biodegrade. During incineration, toxic chlorine gas and ash containing heavy metals are produced, further polluting the air we breathe.

WOULD YOU SWIM IN THIS???

WHAT ABOUT HERE?

WOULD YOU SUNTAN ON THIS BEACH?

Is it fair to these children? Is it safe?

FACT: The previous two images are from a small town called Paraíso de Dios, in Bajos de Haina. It is located about 30 minutes from ASSD and is one of the most polluted cities in the world!

These environmental issues are a lot closer to home than one may have imagined…

FACT: 6,000 tons of solid waste is produced per day in the Dominican Republic. This waste is being dumped in the open without consideration for the surrounding environment or citizens.

FACT: “The Ozama River is one of the most polluted rivers in the country, due to the fact that numerous industries and a lot of homes are located on its banks. Various types of plastics, waste and fish poison are dumped into the rivers.”

FACT: 9.8 tons of formaldehyde, 1.2 tons of lead, 416 tons of ammonium and 18.5 tons of sulfuric acid are released into the air annually in this location. As a result, many residents suffer from bronchitis, asthma and acute diarrheal infection. Children also have high concentration of deadly heavy metals in their blood.

POLLUTION ALSO AFFECTS THE WILDLIFE…

What happened to this bird?

Or this turtle?

Do you want to live in a world where…

The air pollution is so bad that masks are needed on a daily basis?

There is so much trash everywhere to the point it’s too dangerous to walk around without a Hazmat Suit?

THERE IS HOPE!

If we start taking care of our environment now by cleaning up and educating our communities..

We can leave the earth a greener place for the future..

There is so much more to going green than simply

cleaning up

We can…

Create a school garden…

And a butterfly garden..

Make the school sustainable by growing the fruits and vegetables

used in the cafeteria…

Compost all leftovers and use that in planting new produce…

Introduce plants indoors as well as out by breaking up concrete

spaces…

We can turn plastic bottles into…

There are so many opportunities… and ideas..

All we need to do is take the first step…

And bit by bit, we will make a difference!

What will you come up with??
