Need #1: Water

Water helps plants carry all of their nutrients to the different parts of plants. Plants need to transport nutrients to all their different parts. This includes the stem, the leaves, and the roots.

How Does Water Travel?

Water travels through the roots first. The roots soak up all the nutrients and water around them and carry them up. The water then travels through the stem. The stem then distributes the water to the leaves and branches.

Too Much or Too Little Water

Be careful! If you have too much water the roots can rot. This makes it impossible for the roots to soak up any more nutrients and the plant will die. If you have too little water the plant can not carry all the nutrients it needs.

Too much water

Just the right amount!

Need #2: Soil

One of the main functions of soil is that it provides nutrients. Plants need nutrients to help them grow. Without nutrients the plants cannot survive.

Soil Provides a Home

Soil is a plants home! Just like we have a home to live in, plants have soil to live in. Plants need a place that their roots can grow and stretch. If the roots cannot grow, then the rest of the plant will not grow!

Need #3: Sun

Plants need sunlight to maintain a warm temperature. If they get too cold then they will freeze and will not be able to grow. However, if they get too hot then their water will absorb and the plant will shrivel up.

Sun helps the plants make their own food!

Unlike humans, plants make their own food! They take the energy from the sun and combine it with water and nutrients to make food!

This process is called photosynthesis, and without it life would not be possible!
