Worksheet: The Project Charter Project Name: Our Nation and Society: Let's Go Camping! Date: _November 17, 2013_______
Project Manager: _Gordon Anderson _________________________________________
Project Tracking Number: _CS1P12 ________________ ___________________________
Project Justification:
As the winners of the of a tender for SchoolsOnline, our team is thrilled to begin the project with the learning object, "Let's Go Camping!", an online resource for primary schools through SchoolsOnline. This particular learning object will be created for K-2 learners, but it will be adaptable for grades 3-6 as well. "Let's Go Camping!" will address the differences between needs and wants by having students go on a camping trip with their family, a camping trip that will be done wholly online. Students will choose what items to pack for their camping trip and as they pack, they will journal about their choices so that instructors may ask follow-up questions that further guide the learner. The learning object will provide feedback through the family members who are camping with them. Both forms of feedback will employ the constructivist theories SchoolsOnline strives to use. As requested by SchoolsOnline, Flash™ will be used to create the learning object; however, it is recommended HTML5 be used so that it will be compatible on all mobile devices. This project will be the first of 15 learning objects our team will complete for SchoolsOnline. There is a writing team, design team, and panel of subject and education experts who will be working together with Gordon Anderson, the project manager, who will oversee the project. Each team is responsible for their own portion of the project (see "Primary Stakeholders & Roles" below for more details) but all parts will collaborate to create a finished product that meets SchoolsOnline's expectations and standards.
Overview of Deliverables:
• Students will bring their virtual family camping with them. They will have to pack everything they need for the weekend. They will have to choose between their needs and their wants−tent, bedding, food, candy, chips, soda pop, water, flashlights, firewood, portable devices, swimming suit, towel, etc.
• Students will have a certain amount of space in their bags and in the car so they will need to choose wisely.
• Students will journal about their choices so that the instructor can see the students' thought processes. This journal may be done on paper or it may be done in a Word Document so that it can be uploaded to the CMS (course management system) which would help keep the SchoolsOnline learning object smaller in file size. If the user has no CMS, e-mail would be an acceptable alternative.
• The family members will help provide feedback by asking for the essential things the student should have packed. For example, before the evening, the tent needs to be set up and someone will ask for it.
• If students are ill-prepared, they can go home early but they will get to hear their family members' reactions (i.e., they were hungry all night, they were cold, they got a stomach ache from eating too much candy, etc.).

• Students can choose to go camping again to see if they make better choices.
o animation: all of the objects (tent, bedding, etc.), bedroom, kitchen, shed, packing bag, camping location, setting up camp, playing camp scene.
o text: Title Page−Let's Go Camping! Content: You are going camping with your family! How many people are in your family? (Student chooses) You must prepare for a camping trip with __ people. Choose what you want to bring with you. Let's start in your bedroom. What are you going to bring with you? (Student selects items.) Great! Let's go to the kitchen. What are you going to bring with you? (Student selects items.) Great! Now let's go outside to the shed. What are you going to bring with you? (Student selects items.) Are you ready? Let's go camping! [Create feedback from various characters−mother, father, brother, sister.]
o audio: Goes along with text. Use different voices for the mother, father, brother, and sister.
Specific Project Objectives & Success Criteria:
Learning Objectives: • Students will know the difference between a want and a need. • Students will select the appropriate supplies to take camping. • Students will review and discuss their choices.
Project Objectives: • Create a learning object that meets the learning objectives. Benchmarks will be created
using the learning objectives so there is a measurable result that shows the student has learned.
• Build a learning object that will be adaptable for older learners. • Generate a learning object that utilizes constructivist theories. • Construct a learning object that will function on multiple devices. • Design a learning object that can be used in a number of contexts to help learners explore
the difference between wants and needs.
Timeline: This is the first of 15 learning objects that will be completed over the next three months. Therefore, we hope to complete this project in two weeks' time. • Day 1−Analyze the learners and w rite project goals. • Day 2−Write learning objectives; list all deliverables; set deadlines for deliverables; and
create master schedule. • Day 3−Approve project goals and learning objectives; list expenses; create budget; and
develop the storyboard. • Day 4−Approve storyboard; write narration script; and design the learning object setting
and packable items. • Day 5−Design the learning object family members; compile setting, items, and family
members to create learning object; approve narration script; and write journal prompts. • Day 6− Create the website to host the learning object; approve journal prompts; and write
feedback.
WK8ProjJohnsonL 3
Back to Table of Contents
• Day 7−Add in narration and journal prompts to learning object; approve feedback. • Day 8−Add feedback; edit learning object. • Day 9−Approve the learning object; create facilitator guide. • Day 10−Approve facilitator guide; publish the learning object.
Cost: • Will be finalized by Gordon Anderson after he has spoken to each team (writing team,
designing team, and panel of subject matter and educational experts). The estimated cost is $15,000 for labor and software.
Constraints:
• Time will be our largest constraint. Completing a learning object in two weeks is a lofty goal, but we will do our best.
• Flash™ will limit the users of the learning object because many people own devices that are not compatible with Flash™.
• Technical difficulties may slow the project. • Communication issues may slow the project.
Primary Stakeholders & Roles:
• Gordon Anderson will oversee the entire project and facilitate communication between the project teams and SchoolsOnline. Mr. Anderson will also give the final approval of each stage of the project and for the final product.
• The writing team (Chris Smith, Jo Jones, and Fran Johnson) will write the storyboard and script of the learning object.
• The design team (Scott Allen, Jeff Parker, Penny Johnson, and Tracey Ward) will use Flash™/HTML5 to design the learning object using the storyboard and script provided by the writing team.
• The panel of subject matter and educational experts will be available to the writing and design team through e-mail, conference calls, and video chat (i.e. Skype). They may be contacted earlier in the development process so that the writers or designers may address issues before getting too far in the design process. The panel will also be responsible for the revision of the learning object and noticing content-or learning-specific issues.
• SchoolsOnline is responsible for running a to-scale pilot test and giving the teams enough time to complete any necessary revisions before the learning object is provided to a larger audience.
Key Assumptions:
• This is a project for Australian learners and instructors. • Designers can use HTML5 instead of Flash™ because it is more applicable for today's
digital world. • If Flash ™ is used, however, the design team will not be held responsible for unhappy
customers who try to use the learning object on a device that is not Flash™ compatible. • If the sponsor is unhappy with the quality of the first learning object, the timeline will be
revisited so that the 15 learning objects can be completed to the sponsor's liking.
WK8ProjJohnsonL 4
Back to Table of Contents
• The first users will be the full-scale pilot test. After the first use of the learning object by a school, the learning object will undergo further revision before becoming available to more users.
• The sponsor will be in constant communication with Gordon Anderson. • The sponsor will be responsible for delivering the learning object to users. • More time will be given to the design team to adapt the learning objects for older
learners.
Signatures—The following people agree that the above information is accurate:
Project team members: Gordon Anderson (manager), the design team: Scott Allen, Jeff Parker, Penny Johnson, and Tracey Ward, and the writing team: Chris Smith, Jo Jones, and Fran Johnson.
Project sponsor and/or authorizing manager(s): SchoolsOnline
Rationale Statement:
I chose "Case Study 1: Scott Allen - Designing Learning Objects for Primary Learners" for my project. I did make up the names of the writing team. I also invented the budget for this project using PayScale's website and personal experience, but I tried to use the text to avoid making assumptions. Nevertheless, I did have to make one assumption and that was that the team will continue with their camping trip idea since the learning object will then be more realistic and easily adapted for older learners. I also made the assumption that the Design Team and the Development Team are one and the same. I am lacking knowledge in this area so I can't grasp what the Development Team would do that the Design Team isn't; therefore, they have become one group. Everything else I have taken from the text after multiple readings and used my own personal experiences with instructional design via Walden courses and working as a school teacher.
