In response to the Soviets getting the bomb, Truman authorized the creation of the Thermonuclear (Hydrogen) Bomb. This bomb is significantly more powerful than the ones used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Russians exploded theirs a year after the U.S.

Both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. competed to have the biggest, baddest, arms(weapons) in the World. This became known as the arms race.
