Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools recent- ly went through an external review to be con- sidered for re-accreditation through AdvancED. AdvancED is “a non-profit, non-partisan organi- zation that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full poten- tial” (www.advanc-ed.org). Districts that receive accreditation must recertify every five years. The accreditation process is quite extensive and reviews all aspects of a school district which are categorized within three areas: impact of teach- ing and learning, capacity of leadership, and use of resources. While ECPPS will receive a full report from AdvancED at a later date, the initial exit report was positive and the team has recom- mended us for accreditation. The AdvancED team was highly complimentary of the district’s strategic planning process and of the intentional efforts to align our practices and policies to fulfill the adopted plan and to drive success for our students. “ECPPS will continue to work toward full implementation of the strategic plan as well as continue the forward momentum of the Learning Focused framework and other initiatives in place as we strive for excellence,” said Superintendent Cartner. LET’S CONNECT I cannot begin to express how proud and thankful I am of the hard work of staff and students within this great district. I say often that it is an exciting time to be a part of ECPPS and that is never truer than it is right now. Our district currently has an incredible for- ward momentum that will result in posi- tive results for children and our commu- nity. We are in full implementation of our Learning Focused framework to redesign how we are teaching and reaching our children. I am confident that this effort will increase student achievement across the district and ensure our students are reaching their full potential academically. We are very focused on teaching and sup- porting our students beyond academics and therefore, have implemented a new character education curriculum this year as well as continued support of positive behavior intervention. The Elizabeth City Pasquotank Early College preparations are heavily under- way. We anticipate announcing the prin- cipal very soon and having them begin work in early March. The Elizabeth City Police Department requested the assistance of ECPPS in making Valentine’s Day extra special for 410 nursing home or assisted liv-ing residents this year.

Students enrolled in the After School Care Program made cards for each resident which were deliv-ered by the Police Department on Valentine’s Day. This was an excel-lent opportunity for the police officers and ECPPS students to give back to the community and demonstrate caring.

NC Beautiful Grants AwardedSheep-Harney Elementary School and River Road Middle School are recipients of the Windows of Opportunity Grant through NC Beautiful. Sheep-Harney received $1000.00 and River Road Middle received $1487.40. Both schools plan to use the grant funds to build greenhouses and plant various flowers and vegetables.

Mr. Steve Vacendak, Executive Director for NC Beautiful, along with Tim Aydlett, NC Beautiful Board Member, held check presentations at both schools on Tuesday, January 24th. The schools are excited to begin the new projects and look forward to sharing in this learning opportunity with their students.

According to ncbeautiful.org, the mission of NC Beautiful “is to foster environmental stewardship through education and outreach to perpetuate the natural beauty of North Carolina.” The Windows of Opportunities Grants are given out to classroom teachers across the state each year. Teachers can sub-mit applications to be considered for grants up to $1500 between July and November.

Northside Establishes MakerspaceStudents at Northside Elementary School have been actively involved in the media center’s new Makerspace. According to Diana Rendina at renovatedlearning.com, “A Makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materi-als.” Patricia Daniels, media specialist, introduced students and teachers to the Makerspace concept in December, and since then students have been learning first-hand how the laws of science work. Fourth and fifth grade students, working in groups of 2 or 3, collaborated in building a variety of K’NEX® projects based on the science concepts of force & motion and simple machines.

The K’NEX® Education Sets provide students with an opportunity to combine real-world applications with science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) concepts. Students were engaged and energized as they expanded their knowledge and understanding of the STEAM concepts associ-ated with amusement park rides, robots, automobiles, planes and physical structures. Students were involved in hands-on, inquiry-based learning, while interacting and collaborating with other students through discussions of ideas and concepts about force, energy, and motion. Also included in the K’NEX® construction projects were simple machines and their real world connections. Examples of the simple machines built include:• wheel & axle = well & paddle boat• inclined planes = ramps & a wedge for splitting wood• spur gear system = crank fan• crown & gear system = eggbeater• lever = a balance & a wheelbarrow• pulleys = elevators & a block & tackle used to lift car engines• screw = Archimedes screw used to lift liquids & grains in a

hollow tube

Second grade students built Wiggle-Bots using materials from Teacher Geek. Students were given a battery pack, a motor, a variety of gears to choose from, magic markers and decorative items to create their Wiggle Bot. The Wiggle Bots would then dance around the table on their colorful magic marker legs and create as one student put it “an artistic masterpiece.”

The JROTC classes from Northeastern and Pasquotank County High Schools participated in the Raiders com-petition on Saturday, February 11th at John A. Holmes High School in Edenton. The PCHS JROTC placed third in the Raiders competition. PCHS Cadet 2Lt Adrain Sanchez (front row left) placed first for the male one mile challenge with a run time of 5:57. PCHS Cadet A1C Jesse Dennis (front row right) placed first for the female curl-ups and the female push-ups challenge with an amazing 63 curl-ups and 63 push-ups respectively.

Joel Overman, 4th grade student at Weeksville Elementary School, participated in a cabbage growing contest sponsored by Bonnie Plants last spring. His cabbage was the winner at Weeksville Elementary and his name submitted for a drawing by the Commission of Agriculture for a $1000 scholarship.

Joel was the winner for North Carolina and was presented a check for $1000 on February 7th during an assembly program at Weeksville Elementary. The check was presented to Joel by Tommy Fleetwood from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Chuck Roten from Bonnie Plants. Overman is the son of Barry and Jeannette Overman.

The National Junior Honor Society at River Road Middle School, under the guidance of LaShekia Brothers, collected school sup-plies and donated the items to Pasquotank Elementary School.

The supplies collected included pencil pouches, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, and crayons.
