Children in Need – An intervention programme which funds cases where children require complex and extensive surgical

intervention. A case that we did in November 2007 on an ischiopagus conjoined twin, Lakshmi Tatma, made headlines worldwide due to its uniqueness and complexity. This is a programme that we are committed to expanding in scope. These are a few of the several initiatives that Sparsh Foundation has undertaken.

The Orthopaedic Oncology Service provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with malignant and benign bone and soft tissue tumours. The service also treats patients with metastatic (secondary) bone disease where a cancer has spread to bone from elsewhere.

Our tumour orthopaedic surgeons are extensively trained at Tata Memorial Institute of Oncology, Mumbai, as well as Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham UK.

Free surgery for cleft lip and palate: Sparsh Hospital in conjunction with Smile Train Inc., (the largest charity organization in the world dedicated to the service of cleft patients) is providing completely free treatment to all children with the problem of cleft lip and palate. The team has special training and experience in cleft and cranio-facial surgery. The team between themselves has operated on more then 2000 cases of cleft lip and palate. We offer surgical treatment which includes lip and palate repair, Rhinoplasty (Nose Correction), Orthognathic surgery (Jaw correction) and Distraction osteogenesis for gross facial deformities.

Hand Surgery. The service includes surgery followed by intensive physiotherapy by a dedicated hand therapy team.

Congenital hand defects, management of acute hand injuries, re-attachment of amputated fingers or hands, repair of tendon injuries, reconstruction for paralyzed hands, correction of contractures and other post-burn deformities, and nerve reconstructions including Brachial Plexus reconstructions are done.

Brachial Plexus. These nerves can get damaged in new-born infants during childbirth (called Erb’s palsy). This can also happen to adults due to high velocity injuries (typically motorcycle accidents). With the newer treatment modalities at our disposal, dramatic improvement can be obtained for many patients. Sparsh hospital is one of the few centres in the country to offer a comprehensive care and rehabilitation service for these patients.

Our other services include treatment of birth defects like genital abnormalities like hypospadias( abnormally positioned urinary opening), treatment of burns and post-burn contractures, and deformities.

Sparsh has a dedicated team of skilled maxillofacial surgeons; the team is an integral part of trauma care.

Bone injuries of the maxillofacial region. Fractures of the jaw are best treated and stabilized by the surgical placement of small plates and screws at the involved site through concealed incisions. This technique gives the patients most acceptable cosmetic results while allowing them to return to normal function quickly.

Distraction osteogenesis is a procedure to treat gross facial deformities. These procedures typically produce less pain and swelling than the traditional surgical procedure for a similar condition. There are no facial surgical incisions so no unsightly

facial scars result. Orthognathic surgery is needed when jaws don't meet

correctly and/or teeth don't seem to fit with the jaw. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics and corrective jaw surgery repositions misaligned jaws. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts, which are inserted surgically into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. These are just like natural teeth

With the most advanced trauma transport in the country, the medical and the paramedical staff manning the trauma transports are trained in every aspect right from on accident site to safe and efficient transportation, to monitoring of the patient in the ambulance and communication with the hospital.

The 24-hour trauma care facility has state-of-the-art ambulances with a paramedic team and a camera for monitoring the patient's condition from the moment of primary contact, transit and arrival at the casualty ward. DNB Training Courses at Sparsh HospitalThe National Board of Examinations was established with

the prime objective of improving the quality of medical education by elevating the level and establishing standards of post graduate examinations in modern medicine on an all India basis.

Sparsh Hospital is recognized for training in the broad specialties of orthopaedics and anaesthesia with courses in plastic and microvascular surgery expected to start soon. Fellowship courses conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in the specialties of traumatology and microvascular surgery have started.

Education At SparshThe trauma surgeons have undergone ATLS and ITLS

training and are ATLS and ITLS instructors. Regular training classes for the medical, nursing and paramedical staff are conducted. Sparsh Hospital believes that it is critical to develop a dynamic training programme that not only updates staff on the latest techniques and processes but also to act as a refresher course for existing medical practitioners.

The Hejje Gurthu programme uses a low cost technique, which can be easily implemented and which enjoys a very high success rate, called the Ponseti Technique, with tremendous success in the US and in Africa. Resuscitation by Right. Accidents are great levelers. They don't differentiate between the rich and poor, social class or religion. The difference between death and life in many cases is medical intervention in the shortest possible time. This becomes particularly relevant when the accident victim is alone or with someone who is also injured. The ability to pay for medical help at that point in time should be the least of all concerns. Hence Sparsh Hospital believes that everyone has the right to resuscitation. Sparsh foundation will bear all initial costs of resuscitation for unknown patients for the first 24 hours after the

Hejje Gurthu. Sparsh Hospital and Government of Karnataka Club Foot Programme. Club foot is a congenital problem and every year approximately 1400 children are born with it in Karnataka. A problem if left untreated leads to severe

the state of Bihar brought world attention to Sparsh Hospital. Dr. Patil, on hearing the plight of Lakshmi Tatma who was suffering from this extremely rare and challenging condition, travelled to Bihar in Sep 2007 to bring her for treatment to Bangalore. A month after she was admitted to Sparsh Hospital, Lakshmi was operated on the 6th and 7th of November 2007. A marathon surgery by a large team of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff led by Dr. Patil operated for 27 hrs at a stretch to successfully complete the separation of the parasitic twin from the body of Lakshmi. A surgery of this magnitude - very rare globally - was done for the first time in India. It won the hearts of millions both in India and abroad. The entire treatment was done free of cost by Sparsh Foundation.

Sparsh Hospital is committed to changing the way healthcare is practiced in the country.
