Tolerance can be defined in its simplest and beautiful form as the willingness to accept behavior and

beliefs of others that are different from your own. More often it is an ability to deal with something unpleasant or annoying, or continue existing despite bad or difficult conditions.

A large number of us are ready to give extensive speeches ranging from community, state and region including cultural, religious, gender, caste tolerance and many more. What is the level of practice?

Are tolerant people more happy or happy people more tolerant? A very relevant question to ask ourselves. Take a moment to think about your lifestyle: your behaviors, actions, thoughts, and environment. Now think about someone else’s and it is possible that certain aspects of other people’s lives at times annoy us. The level of tolerance in your life can be attributed to levels of happiness and contentment, as many researchers have pointed out.

An appreciable level of tolerance can be achieved by developing capacities for independent judgement, critical thinking and ethical reasoning. The diversity of our world’s many religions, languages, cultures and ethnicities is not a cause for conflict, but is a treasure that enriches us all.

ToleranceIn 1995, UNESCO’s Member States

adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. It affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.

It would be apt to learn how intolerance can be encountered.

Individual awareness is the primary step to fight intolerance. Racial jokes, stereotyping, stigmatizing, insults etc are some common ways of intolerant expressions among individuals leading to revenge by victims. It is important that each one of us ask ourselves: Am I a tolerant person? Do I stereotype or reject others? Am I a cause to make someone feel low?

Need for education: At every level starting from primary levels of education, lessons should be encouraged at home and in school to be open-minded and curious. . Intolerance is very often rooted in ignorance and fear: fear of the unknown, of the other, other cultures, nations, religions. Intolerance is also closely linked to an exaggerated sense of self-worth and pride, whether individual,

national or religious. These notions are taught and learned at an early age. Therefore, greater emphasis needs to be placed on educating more and better. Greater efforts need to be made to teach children about tolerance and human rights, about other ways of life.

Practicing tolerance needs strenuous efforts as an inflated self-esteem is rooted in every individual. Reduce the importance of ‘I’ and look on others with respect in your homes, work place or wherever you are.

“An appreciable level of tolerance can be achieved by developing capacities for independent judgement, critical thinking and ethical reasoning”

MD’s MessageV George AntonyManaging Director

Confidently completing the 1st Quarter of this financial year, let us recall the new initiatives, changes

and special focused areas. Diversification in areas of digitalisation

is where HO has deliberated and spends maximum time on. How to expand and diversify XPay to the mass population, employees into using of mobile app was the highest discussed subjects at HO. In line with that we have few plans in the offing which will get rolled out in the days to come. Some of them are Xpayshop.com where customers can buy and sell anything and avail any type service, it will work like a super mall. Make XPay PG available in all major online sites, XPay physical debit card in tie-up with a bank so that it works like any bank card, use of XPay in POS machines without card etc.

Formerly expansion of network was by opening physical branches but presently our focus is on virtual branch which assist individual operations through branches, avail services via Internet (E-Commerce) and Mobile (M-Commerce) from any place at any time.

How to make Mobile App, XPay Cash Wallet popular by educating and convincing customers about its benefits is a collective challenge in front of the Company and all of us.

The next area of priority was Loans

with many sub verticals such as Gold Loan/ Personal Loan/Vehicle Loan/LAP/MSME loan etc. Many new schemes were introduced under this category and are made available for various purposes. We are planning to take retired bankers to fill up vacancies so that we can focus more on loan business more efficiently.

Under Business Development, we have given more focus to regional sales team to monitor Corporate and Agency segment better. These changes have started bringing better results already.

Another area of focus is to educate our various agents to work through FSMart web site. It is a big challenge in front of us because they are all used to working manually over phone and bringing them to another culture requires lots of efforts from all of us. Since the results of doing this is immense in terms of quality and revenue, we should all strive hard and make it happen.

Many new employees have joined branches and HO as well. Congratulations and all the best to all who have taken new profiles and challenges and hope that they can give their best to the company. Superiors to handhold and support them.

We have introduced many recognition schemes/Promo schemes for employees, including Fly China Campaign. Hope it would definitely benefit our employees.

It is not the quantity, but Quality that matters’ anywhere. As ours is a service oriented organization, we need to serve our customers properly and flawlessly. If we need to offer this level of service we need to have adequate product knowledge. Only through Product knowledge, we will get the confidence to talk to customers. Product knowledge can be attained only through proper training. As such it is decided to have monthly training programmes at regional offices without fail.

In summary things are going as planned and budgeted and let us hope we will be able to sustain the same momentum in the days to come in all areas where we are focused in.

A Recap of Last Quarter

“we need to serve our customers properly and flawlessly. If we need to offer this level of service we need to have adequate product knowledge. Only through Product knowledge, we will get the confidence to talk to customers. Product knowledge can be attained only through proper training”

We are in an age where information is no more restricted but accessed

by all. Advances in technology and communication, combined with the explosive growth in data and information, have given rise to a more empowered global consumer. Business Houses also have turned their attention to the so called ‘Voices’ as their business focus has shifted to more of a customer centric approach, creating a better customer experience for consumers in their service levels. Connecting with customers, through innovative channels will be the key to retaining and acquiring customers.

To connect with our customers in an effective manner, it is important that we have strong and quality customer database, which can be measured, segmented, analyzed to deliver customized service results. As the great visionary Steve Jobs once said – “Get closer than ever to your customers. So close that you tell them what they need well before they realise it themselves”. Here, CRM plays an important role.

CRM is not just the application of technology but is a strategy to learn more about customer’s needs and behavior in order to develop a strong bond with them; deliver services which exceed their expectation.

Satisfied Customers are the lifeblood of any organization. With increasing number of satisfied customers, there is always an addition of NEW customer to our business. Typically in any organization, 20% of customers account for 80% of the turnover. It is important to know, which customers fit into 20% and then categorize and manage them effectively.

Studies has proven time and again

that when an issue of poor service to a customer is satisfactorily resolved by the organization, the customer increases their loyalty to a higher level than which existed prior to the problem. Feedback from our customers, be it complaints or appreciation - is essential for evaluation and development of service standards. They speak/write to us because they care about us, and we need to value their loyalty. Complaints are free guidance from our customers for improving our service quality and an opportunity to increase customer loyalty.

Dell Computers illustrate a good example on how to increase customer loyalty and retention. Roughly 2-3 weeks after expected delivery of a Dell product, Dell Customer Service Representative gives the customer a call. The purpose of the call isn’t to try selling anything, it’s simply a courtesy call to make sure the product has arrived and the customer is happy with it.

By calling every customer, they eliminate the chance of a customer getting upset by unforeseeable shipping delays or order errors. It also creates a human touch with customer, and he/she knows that they dealing with a real person, not a company who sells products online. The customer also get assurance from Dell Team that if ever there is a problem in the future, they know exactly whom to call. This is known as proactive customer service and similar actions goes a long way in building customer loyalty which will increase customer retention.

Our efforts should be on developing a strong CRM and finding innovative ways to Connect with Customers and improve on Customer Service Levels. More than just

Software or an Automation of our Business Processes, CRM is in fact a Culture - a new way of managing customers and ensuring repeat business, which we need to acquaint in our business.

Get to know your customers, more than ever

Travel is a passion for many, an inevitable necessity to many others or an emergency for few.

Most of us travel and explore localities in the name of “vacation”, “holiday”, “outing” and other comfortable labels. ECONOMIC NEWS

UNIFIED PAYMENT INTERFACE;USE YOUR MOBILE TO PAY BILLS

Xpressions - August 2016 9

The much-awaited desi payment system via smartphone — Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will give a

big boost to the efforts of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and banks, hit by a spike in bad loans, in moving towards a ‘less-cash’ India.

Fifteen banks including private and public banks will be part of UPI. Another 15 banks, including State Bank of India and HDFC Bank will become part of UPI by the end of September. It is expected that all banks will become part of UPI by March 2017. UPI is now on the top of the IMPS (immediate payment service system). There are 120 banks in the IMPS. All these banks will have to become part of the UPI to make it a revolutionary digital payment system.

Traditional e-payment methodsMost electronic payments in India are

facilitated through NEFT and RTGS.In National Electronic Funds Transfer

(NEFT), money transfers are made via electronic messages. The bank details of the sender and the beneficiary are linked using bank branch name and IFSC code. When a payment is initiated, the payer’s bank sends a ‘message’ to its NEFT service centre. All such messages are pooled every hour and the bank’s NEFT centre sends it to the RBI, which initiates the transfer. The process typically takes a little more than an hour and is available only during the bank’s working hours.

Unlike NEFT, in Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), fund transfers handled on one-to-one basis. Large value

transactions, typically over Rs. 2 lakhs, are carried out using this method. This is also done during working hours.

Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) is a more recent form of fund transfer that is gaining popularity. A user is given a 7-digit Mobile Money Identifier (MMID) Code. The sender initiates payment using mobile bank by giving the MMID code and registered mobile number of the beneficiary. Most banks offer this service free-of-cost now. It is a round-the-clock immediate payment service.

HOW DOES UPI WORKImagine buying grocery from a

supermarket by paying cash. You handover the cash, the biller hands you a receipt and the purchased good. UPI is as simple as this. Instead of handing over the cash, you tell your virtual identity to the cashier. The cashier generates an invoice through UPI, you approve it using your mobile phone and the payment is made!

The UPI is an improved version of IMPS. Apart from a bank account, all that you need is a smartphone. Once you register for UPI with your bank, a unique ‘virtual address’ will be created. This is mapped with your mobile phone. To initiate the payment, UPI invokes this virtual identity of the beneficiary and transfers money in real-time. It works on single-click 2-factor authentication.

UPI will allow a customer to have multiple virtual addresses for multiple accounts in various banks. In order to ensure privacy of customer’s data, there is no account number mapped anywhere other than the customer’s

own bank. This allows the customer to freely share the financial address with others.

A customer can also decide to use the mobile number or Aadhaar number as the name instead of the short name for the virtual address.

UPI can potentially eliminate the need for maintaining a mobile wallet, as this ‘virtual address’ is not limited only to individuals. This is a significant step towards moving into a cashless economy.

With the price of smartphones falling sharply, we are on the verge of solving the last mile problem,” Rajan said. The RBI is planning a comprehensive review of the prepaid payment instruments (PPI) guidelines which will be undertaken keeping in view the changing scenario.

Collection of toll, largely done in the form of cash payments, is another segment where efforts to migrate to electronic payments have been sporadic and isolated. Such disparate developments have led to the propagation of different systems in different parts of the country, causing confusion and inconvenience to the customers.

The launch of UPI and a host of other products are expected to bring banks back into reckoning in the technology revolution in the banking sector. Banks have been the traditional gateway to payment services.

However, with the fast pace of technological changes, this domain is no longer the monopoly of banks. Non-bank entities are providing innovative payment products and services, forcing banks to reflect upon a strategy — to compete or to collaborate.

Is Kerala’s money order economy in trouble? Nearly 10,000 Indians are stranded in the Gulf states and 3,000 of

them are in labour camps with no food for the past few days. With Kerala contributing the major share of the migrant workforce and their remittance fuelling the state’s growth engine, Kerala may have to face an uncertain future.

For the last few decades, the Kerala

economy has thrived on remittances made by the migrants. The Malayali exodus to the Gulf started in the 1970s, when the local unemployment rate reached an all-time high and the Gulf economy was booming. Fighting the extreme weather conditions, the Malayali workers laid the foundations of the Gulf economy and ensured a prosperous life for their families back home. The harsh conditions and oppressive labour laws never stopped them. According to 2014 figures,

there are about 24 lakh Malayali workers in the Gulf, up from 13.6 lakh in 1998. They have sent home Rs 1 lakh crore last year.

The Gulf migrants have faced several crises, ranging from the Kuwait war to the global recession of 2008, and now another bout of recession caused by the falling oil prices.

• Napoleon III of France had a special ability to remember the names of all those he met. His secret was to say “so sorry, I missed your name” after being introduced to a new person. This would cause the name to be repeated and reinforced within his memory. If the name was difficult, he would ask for the proper spelling.

• The sages of China have held a basic life philosophy for thousands of years: develop an indomitable spirit along with courtesy and integrity. The repetition of these three traits

will make you an exceptionally powerful individual respected by all. Exert your effort and personal influence to attain these qualities.

• A valuable technique for defeating negative and self-limiting thoughts that can hamper you from attaining peak performance is the mental interrupt device. When a negative thought enters your consciousness, first you must become aware of it and have a strong desire to remove it for good. To do this, interrupt the negative train of thought

by doing something to break and banish the self-limiting pattern. When the bad thought enters, you may pinch yourself and say, “I am strong and weak thoughts are gone”, or you may shout out loud or do anything that will divert your attention and remove the negative focus. By practising this technique, you will see a marked decrease in the negative thoughts that most people have, paving the way to the mindset of a true winner.

The Top 200 Secrets of Success and the Pillars of Self-MasteryBy Robin S. Sharma (Author of “e Monk Who Sold His Ferrari”)

People are crucial for the success of any organization. Robert Owen and Charles Babbage were the first

men to realize that people’s welfare led to perfect work. ‘Human Resource’ concept first evolved in 18th century Europe and their conclusion was acceptable. Without healthy workers, an organization would not survive. HR later emerged as a specific field in the early 20th century. Later, Taylor explored what he termed “scientific management” others later referred to “Taylorism”, striving to improve economic efficiency in manufacturing jobs.

As years passed by enough theoretical evidence existed to make a business case for strategic workforce management, changes in the business landscape and in public policy had transformed the employer-employee relationship, and the discipline became formalized as “industrial and labor relations”.

In 1913 one of the oldest known professional HR associations — the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) — started in England

as the Welfare Workers’ Association; it changed its name a decade later to the Institute of Industrial Welfare Workers, and again the next decade to Institute of Labour Management before settling upon its current name in 2000. Likewise in the United States, the world’s first institution of higher education dedicated to workplace studies — the School of Industrial and Labor Relations — formed at Cornell University in 1945. In 1948, what would later become the largest professional HR association — the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) — formed as the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA)

In the Soviet Union, meanwhile, Stalin’s use of patronage exercised through the “HR Department”, convinced by the effectiveness and influence of human-resource policies and practices, Stalin himself acknowledged the importance of the human resource.

During the latter half of the 20th century, union membership declined significantly, while workforce management continued to expand its influence within organizations. In the USA, the phrase “industrial and labor relations” came into use to refer

specifically to issues concerning collective representation, and many companies began referring to the proto-HR profession as “personnel administration”. Many current HR practices originated with the needs of companies in the 1950s to develop and retain talent.

In the late 20th century, advances in transportation and communications greatly facilitated workforce mobility and collaboration. Corporations began viewing employees as assets rather than as cogs in a machine. “Human resources management” consequently became the dominant term for the function—the ASPA even changing its name to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in 1998

“Human capital” typically refers to a more narrow view of human resources; i.e., the knowledge the individuals embody and can contribute to an organization. Likewise, other terms sometimes used to describe the field include “organizational management”, “manpower management”, “talent management”, “personnel management”, and simply “people management”.

• 360 Degree Feedback: In human resources, 360-degree feedback is employee development feedback that comes from all around the employee. The feedback would come from subordinates, peers and super ordinates in the organizational hierarchy, as well as a self-assessment.

• Layoff: A situation in which there is a temporary shortage of work and employees are told there is no work for them but that management intends to recall them but when work is again available.

Taking one hour from your hectic morning to watch kids playing in a nearby park or to take a brisk walk might seem like a poor use of time to some. Andaman and Nicobar Islands

urgently necessary. May 17, 1859 was another major day for Andaman. The “Battle of Aberdeen” was fought between the Great Andamanese Tribe and the British. Today, a memorial stands in Andaman Water sports complex as a tribute to the people who lost their life. Fearing foreign invasion and with help from an escaped convict from Cellular Jail, the great Andamanese tribe stormed the British post, but they were outnumbered and soon suffered heavy loss of life. Today, the tribe has been reduced to some 50 people, with less than 50% of them adults.

In 1872, the two island groups Andaman and Nicobar, were united under a chief commissioner residing at Port Blair. From the time of its development in 1858, in response to the mutiny and rebellion of the previous year, the settlement was made a repository for political prisoners. The Cellular Jail at Port Blair when completed in 1910 included 698 cells designed for solitary confinement with a single ventilation window.

The Indians imprisoned here referred to the Island and its prison as Kala Pani (“black water”). A 1996 film set on the island took that term as its title ‘Kaalapani.’ The number of prisoners who died in this camp is estimated to be in thousands. Many more died of harsh treatment, harsh living and working conditions in this camp.

The Viper Chain Gang Jail on Viper Island was reserved for troublemakers, and was also the site of hangings. In the 20th century,

it became a convenient place to house prominent members of India’s independence movement. The penal colony was eventually closed on 15 August 1947 when India gained independence. It is since then served as a museum of the independence movement.

FloraThe Middle Andamans harbour is mostly moist deciduous forests. North Andamans is characterised by the wet evergreen type, with plenty of woody climbers.

The natural vegetation of the Andamans is tropical forest, with mangroves on the coast. Most of the forests are evergreen, but there are areas of deciduous forest as well. The South Andaman forests have a profuse growth of ferns and orchids.

The Andaman forests are largely unspoiled, despite logging and the demands of the fast-growing population driven by immigration from the Indian mainland. There are protected areas and these are mainly aimed at preserving the coast and the marine wildlife rather than the rainforests. Threats to wildlife come from introduced species including rats, dogs, cats and the elephants of Interview Island and North Andaman. Andaman forests contain

LocationThe Andaman and Nicobar islands form an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal towards the west, Myanmar to the north and east. The Andaman Archipelago is an Oceanic continuation of the Burmese Arakan Yoma range in the North and of the Indonesian Archipelago in the South. It has 325 islands which cover an area of 6,408 km2 with

The Andaman Sea to the east between the islands and the coast of Burma. North Andaman Island is 285 kilometres south of Burma, although a few smaller Burmese islands are closer, including the three Coco Islands. The Ten Degree Channel separates the Andamans from The Nicobar Islands to the south. The highest point is located in North Andaman Island (Saddle Peak at 732 m (2,402 feet).

HistoryPort Blair was a naval base and a settlement in the southeast of Great Andaman. A penal colony where disease and death was common and the government ceased to operate it in 1796. In the 1830s and 1840s, shipwrecked crews who landed on the Andamans were often attacked and killed by the natives and the islands had a reputation for cannibalism.

In 1855, the government proposed another settlement on the islands, including a convict establishment, but the Indian Rebellion of 1857 forced a delay in its construction. However, because the rebellion gave the British so many prisoners, it made the new Andaman settlement and prison

200 or more timber producing species of trees, out of which about 30 varieties are considered to be commercial. The holy Rudraksha (Elaeocarps sphaericus) and aromatic Dhoop resin trees also are found here.

FaunaThe Andaman Islands are home to a number of animals, many of them endemic. Interview Island (the largest wildlife sanctuary in the territory) in Middle Andaman holds a population of feral elephants, which were brought in for forest work by a timber company and released when the company went bankrupt. This population has been subject to research studies.•Endemicornearendemicbirds

include - serpent-eagle, crake, wood-pigeon, cuckoo dove, scops owl, hawk-owl, the hornbill, woodpecker, drongo, treepie, the white-headed starling, the glossy swiftlet and the edible-nest swiftlet. The islands also have a number of endemic reptiles, toads and frogs.

Places of tourist interestThere is a sanctuary 45 miles (72 km) from Havelock Island for saltwater crocodiles. Over the past 25 years there have been 24 crocodile attacks with four fatalities, including the death of an American tourist. Crocodiles are not only found within the sanctuary, but throughout the island chain in varying densities.

They are habitat restricted, so the population is stable but not large. Populations occur throughout available mangrove habitat on all major islands, including a few creeks on Havelock. The species uses the ocean as a means of travel between different rivers and estuaries, thus they are not commonly observed in Open Ocean. It is best to avoid swimming near mangrove areas or the mouths of creeks; swimming in the open ocean should be safe, but it is best to have a spotter around.

Andamanese tribes who believe in their only deity Paluga resides on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Saddle Peak. Tribal people try to avoid any action that might displease Paluga. Tourists should take special care not to annoy the tribes by involving in their personal affairs or talking about religious beliefs.

Other places include Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island. Ross and Smith Island Beach. Laxmanpur Beach, Neil Island. Lalaji Bay Beach, Long Island. Guitar Island Beach. Wandoor Beach.

TransportThe only commercial airport in the islands is Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, which has scheduled services to Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. The airport is under control of the Indian Navy. Only daylight operations are allowed. A small airstrip of approximately 1000

metres is located near the Eastern shore of North Andaman near Diglipur.

Due to the length of the routes and the small number of airlines flying to the islands, fares have been relatively expensive, although cheaper for locals than visitors. Fares are high during peak seasons of spring and winter, but fares have been decreased over the time due to expansion of the civil aviation industry in India.

CURRENT AFFAIRS

The Union Government has set the ambitious target to roll out of the Goods and Services Tax, (GST) from

1st April 2017. It was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley after unveiling a detailed road map for GST implementation. This announcement was made after Rajya Sabha had passed The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014. Later this bill was passed in Lokh Sabha also.

How would be GST administered in India?

• There will be two components of GST – Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) in order to comply with federal structure of India.

• Thus both Centre and States have authority to simultaneously levy GST across the value chain. GST will be levied on every supply of goods and services.

• States will levy and collect the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) on all transactions within a State and Centre will levy and collect Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST).

• The credit of SGST paid on inputs will be allowed for paying the SGST on output. No cross utilization of credit would be permitted.

• Similarly, the input tax credit of CGST will be available for discharging the CGST liability on the output at each stage.

Benefits of GST For business and industry

Uniformity of tax rates and structures:• GST will ensure that indirect tax rates

and structures are uniform across the country.

• Thereby it will increase certainty and ease of doing business i.e. make it tax neutral, irrespective of the choice of place of doing business in the country.Removal of cascading:

• The GST will ensure minimal cascading of taxes (i.e. tax on tax) as it will have a system of seamless tax-credits throughout the value-chain, and across boundaries of States. It will help to reduce hidden costs of doing business. Easy compliance:

• The GST regime will have a robust and comprehensive IT system. Therefore, all tax payer services such as registrations, payments, returns, etc. will be available to the taxpayers online. Thus it would make compliance easy and transparent.Improved competitiveness:

• It will reduce transaction costs of doing business that will eventually lead to an improved competitiveness for the trade and industry. Gain to manufacturers and exporters:

• The subsuming of major Central and State indirect taxes in GST would reduce the cost of locally manufactured goods and services.

• It will increase the competitiveness of Indian goods and services in the international market and give boost to Indian exports. For Central and State Governments

Simple and easy to administer:• GST will replace multiple indirect taxes

at the Central and State levels into single regime.

• GST backed with a robust end-to-end IT system will be simpler and easier to administer than all other indirect taxes of the Centre and State levied so far. Better controls on leakage:

• The robust IT infrastructure of GST regime will result in better tax compliance that will curb leakages and incentivize tax compliance by traders. Higher revenue efficiency:

• GST will lead to higher revenue efficiency as it is expected to decrease the cost of collection of tax revenues of the Government. For the consumer

Single and transparent tax proportionate to the value of goods and services:

• Under GST regime there will be only one tax from the manufacturer to the consumer. Thus, it will remove many hidden taxes leading to transparency of taxes paid to the final consumer. Relief in overall tax burden:

• The overall tax burden on most commodities will come down because of efficiency gains and prevention of leakages which will benefit consumers.

Mother, I salute thee!Rich with thy hurrying streams, bright with orchard gleams,Cool with thy winds of delight,Dark fields waving Mother of might,Mother free.

Glory of moonlight dreams,Over thy branches and lordly streams,Clad in thy blossoming trees,Mother, giver of easeLaughing low and sweet!Mother I kiss thy feet,Speaker sweet and low!Mother, to thee I salute.

Vande Mataram —literally, “I pray/bow down to thee, Mother”—is a poem from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s or Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s 1882 novel Anandamath. He is the composer of India’s national song Vande Mataram, originally a Bengali and Sanskrit worship personifying India as a mother goddess and inspiring the activists during the Indian Independence Movement.

In the year 1875 Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was travelling in a train from Calcutta to his village ‘Kaantaal Paara’of North Parganas district of Bengal. While travelling he was overjoyed by viewing the lovely country side and the attractive scenery. This filled his mind with

inspiration to note down his famed poem.

It is a hymn to the Mother Land. It played a vital role in the Indian independence movement, first sung in a political context by Rabindranath Tagore at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress. In 1950 after India’s independence, the song’s first two verses were given the official status of the “national song” of the Republic of India, distinct from the national anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana.

Bankim Chandra was one of the earliest graduates of the newly established Calcutta University. After his BA, he joined the British Indian government as a civil servant, becoming a District Magistrate and later a District Collector. Chattopadhyay was very interested in recent events in Indian and Bengali history, particularly the Revolt of 1857 and the previous century’s Sanyasi Rebellion. Around the same time, the administration was trying to promote “God Save the Queen” as the anthem for Indian subjects, which Indian nationalists disliked. It is generally believed that the concept of Vande Mataram came to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay when he was still a government official, around 1876.

“Vande Mataram” was the whole nation’s thought and motto for independence during the Indian

independence movement. Large rallies, fermenting initially in Bengal, in the major metropolis of Calcutta, would work themselves up into a patriotic fervour by shouting the slogan “Vande Mataram”, or “Hail to the Mother land!” The British, fearful of the potential danger of an incited Indian populace, at one point banned the utterance of the motto in public forums, and imprisoned many independence activists for disobeying the proscription.

We all belong to a place where our motherland is called by the name ‘Maata’. Hence it is our duty to understand the real meaning and truth behind this enchanting hymn which roused the nation from slumber and filled them with patriotism and urged them to fight for independence. The lyrics of this poem show the mighty Mother India, her natural beauty and her strength. This famous creation of Bankim Chandra was like a booster and strength for the freedom fighters of independence movement.

Mahatma Gandhi loved this legendary hymn and praised the lyrics that filled his mind with inspiration. Let us all bow and respect Shri Bankim Chandra for gifting such a motivating song to the people of India.

LIFE STYLE

Practice to eat our food in such a way that all the ingredients in the food can mix in the blood

as good quality ingredients.

EAT ONLY WHEN WE ARE HUNGRY: a very small but important guideline while consuming food. This helps proper digestion of food.

WHAT IS HUNGER? Hunger is nothing but the signal to us from our body that all the parts in our body are ready for digesting and mixing the food with the blood.

FOOD TURNS OUT TO BE POISON: Food eaten without feeling hungry becomes a waste or poison. An important secret to be shared and feel good to know that no disease will arise if you do not take food as per time schedule. Eating when you are hungry is totally different from eating timely food. For example, let us say that we took breakfast at 8.00 AM, and did not give any appreciable work to our body after breakfast. When the clock shows 2.00 PM, we think it is lunch time without checking whether we are hungry. Now if you see the time and eat lunch at 2.00 PM when even the breakfast that you ate is not yet digested and mixed in the blood, you will develop diseases. The food in the stomach is not digested and added to it the food taken as lunch will also stay undigested. Ultimately the cause for all the diseases is ‘Eating without

feeling Hungry’.Let us take a reverse situation: You

eat your breakfast at 8.00 A M. Then you work hard and You feel hungry at 12.00 noon. But you wait till 2.00 P M for lunch as per time schedule. Here the hydrochloric acid in the stomach will be secreted by 12.00 noon when you feel hungry. Since this acid does not get any food till 2.00 PM, it will be diluted.

Thus, the food that you eat two hours after you feel hunger will not be digested properly. What we have to understand from this is that, if you eat timely food you will get diseases. If you eat food when you are hungry you will not get diseases and the diseases that you may already have will be cured.

Who has invented the law that everyone should eat thrice daily? Some people may do more physical work. They can eat even five times a day. Some people will do less physical work, It may be sufficient if they eat twice a day. Therefore, from now on, please do not see the clock for eating. We have to keep on doing our work. Only when our body develops the feeling of hunger we should think about eating food.

The great sage Thiruvalluvar says in the immortal Tamil epic Thirukkural, “The body does not need medicine for any disease. After the food that we ate is digested, we need to eat food only when we feel hungry again. If we follow this, our body will not need

21Xpressions - August 2016

any medicine at all for any disease.” Thus, an important principle in our

treatment is that we should eat only when we feel hungry. To start with, we can practice this eating habit for at least 10 times in a month. Then we can increase it to 20, 30 and so on. Some of us may work in a company. We may be required to eat lunch between 1.00 PM and 2.00 PM and return to work at 2.00 PM. What can we do if we do not feel hungry during that time? In this way, there may be a necessity to eat food without feeling hungry at times. During such times, we can follow the techniques we are yet to explain. We can save ourselves from the food we eat being converted into waste and poison if we are ready to change our eating pattern. Try this pattern while you are at home and whenever possible. However, it is always good to wait for hunger.

Strength and authority are gifts of God but judicious usage for the benefit of mankind is man’s duty. We are often ready to project our petty achievements

in pride and if given a chance are ready to display our powers. The way of great people is quite different as shown in the central lessons of the Ramayana, We will observe that the epic revolves around the life lessons that we can learn from the “Ideal Man” who upholds eternal values.

In Ramayana Lord Raama, was definitely the greatest warrior ever! Lord Krishna in Bhagavadgita remarks “I am Raama among warriors”. He learnt all the Shastras and unparallel Dhanurvidya under guidance of great Vasishtha. He was given super-human powers like bala, by the great Vishwamithra, Rishi of Gayathri manthra. Vishwamithra maharshi also taught him all the secret astras that ever existed, which was only known to him in this universe (he learnt it from Lord Shiva). In addition, Agasthya Mahamuni gave him many additional powers.

A few glimpses of Lord Raama’s valour:•WithonearrowRaamakillstaataki,themighty

their army in 14 minutes single handed.Despite being such a great warrior, he never displayed

strength on his own to project himself. Raavana gives 30 days’ time to Sita to decide marriage with him or else she would be killed. Bharata took word from Raama that he should return immediately from his 14 years of aranyavaas or he would sacrifice himself. Raama and his army reach the shores of ocean with barely 30 days at hand. They had to cross the ocean, defeat Ravana & his army, take Sita back to Ayodhya in 30 days’ time. Within this short period, boosted by Raama’s courage Lakshmana was ready to take up any orders and even suggest not to wait asking Ocean God for a way.

VG NAIR’S FACTS

What Raama does is unbelievable. Though he had the strength and power to control the ocean God, he did not do it. He did penance on the shores of the ocean for 3 long days to give them a way. Finally after 3 days Raama gets angry and to remind Ocean God’s duty, aims an Astra at him but suddenly, Ocean God appears and suggests a way of crossing him…

Controlling one’s arrogance is one the most difficult things. If it is controlled we will see a more peaceful world.

At any time people who are humble and obedient are respected by others. If Lord Raama Himself could be so patient and humble, what extend of humility and obedience is expected from each one of us as mere human beings, to our elders and parents? How far are we successful?

A beautiful moral lesson that can be learned from the story of “Ramayana” is loyalty to family, specifically to siblings. In the story, Lakshman gave up the life he was leading and lived in the forest for 14 years just to be with his brother Raama.

The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most secular and enlightened Indians to have ever graced our country, drew inspiration from the life of Raama. His dream was to institute ‘Raam Rajya’ in independent India, free from the yoke of colonialism.

Lessons from Ramayana are relevant, valuable and worth imbibing serving as cornerstones to our modern republic as they were at the time of the Ramayana.

CULTURAL INDIA

RAKSHA BANDHANRabindranath Tagore, the Indian Nobel Laureate for literature, invoked Raksha Bandhan and Rakhi, as concepts to inspire love, respect and a vow of mutual protection between Hindus and Muslims during India’s colonial era. Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi also called Rakhi Purnima, popularly celebrated as a secular festival among many communities in different parts of India propagating the love and duty between brothers and sisters and also any brother-sister relationship between men and women who are relatives or biologically unrelated.

SIGNIFICANCEOn Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a rakhi (sacred thread) on her brother’s wrist. This symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her.

Raksha Bandhan as a religious festival focuses on performing the aarti and saying prayers prior to tying the rakhi, applying tilak on the brother’s forehead with prayers from the religious scriptures. It is one of the several occasions where family ties are affirmed in India. To many, the festival transcends biological family, brings together men and women across religions, diverse ethnic groups and ritually emphasizes harmony and love. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Śrāvana, and typically falls in August every year.

The story of Krishna and Draupadi is very interesting as it narrates the origin of Raksha Bandhan festival. Krishna considered Draupadi his friend. When Krishna cut his finger while beheading Shishupal, Draupadi immediately tore off a piece of her sari and bandaged his cut. Krishna said

that with this loving act, she wrapped him in debt and he would repay each “thread” when the time arrives. Indeed, whenever Draupadi needed Krishna’s protection she fervently prayed for his help, he came to the rescue and gave her unlimited cloth.

Days or weeks before Raksha Bandhan, women shop for Rakhi, the ceremonial thread to tie around her brother’s (or brother-like friend’s) wrist. Some women make their own Rakhi. Rakhi in the form of a colorful woven thread is most common. Typically the brother(s) too shop for gifts for the sister, ahead of Raksha Bandhan. The gift from the brother can be a simple thoughtful token of love, and may be more elaborate.

One of Tagore’s poems invoking Rakhi is notable in this context. The love in my body and heartFor the earth’s shadow and lightHas stayed over years.

With its cares and its hope it has thrownA language of its ownInto blue skies.

It lives in my joys and gloomsIn the spring night’s buds and bloomsLike a Rakhi-band

On the Future’s hand.In 1905, the British Empire divided

Bengal, a province of British India on the basis of religion. Rabindra Nath Tagore arranged a ceremony to celebrate Raksha Bandhan to strengthen the bond of love and togetherness between Hindus and Muslims of Bengal, and urged them to protest in unity against the British Empire. He used the idea of Raksha Bandhan to spread the feeling of brotherhood. In 1911, British colonial Empire reversed the partition and unified Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore started Rakhi Mahotsavas as a symbol of Bengal unity, and as a larger community festival of harmony. In parts of West Bengal, his tradition continues as people tie Rakhis to their neighbors and close friends.

RAKHI AND ITS COLOUR SIGNIFICANCEEach colour has significance in this festival.

Tagore used white, so white signifies friendship.

Indrani used red for her husband Indra, so red signifies Love and loyalty.

Orange and Yellow is most popular in India which was used by Laxmi and Yamuna for their brothers Bali and Yama, so this colour is used for brothers.

Climate change is a frequently spoken topic with the realisation that most of the causes are human-induced and proceeding at express speed that is

unprecedented in the past 1,300 years.Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances

have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.

Geologically speaking, large changes in climate have happened in tens of years and not in millions or thousands. Ice samples drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and Tropical Mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels.

The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century. Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.

Convincing evidences for rapid climate change1. Global temperature rise - Earth has warmed since 1880.

Most of this warming has occurred since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years having occurred since 1981 and all the 10 years of the past 12 years was noted to be the warmest. Surface temperatures continue to increase despite the 2000’s witnessing a solar output decline. An unusual deep solar minimum in 2007-2009 was the result.

2. Rise in sea water level – The last century marked around 17centimeters/6.7 inches of rise in sea level. Interestingly last decade marked double in comparison with that of the last century.

3. Reduction of ice sheets – Cubic kilometers of ice sheets are being lost every year according to NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment reports. Ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica seems to be losing 150 to 250

cubic kilometers of ice sheets every year between 2002 and 2006. Decrease in Antarctica is at a record rate.

4. Warmer Oceans - The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.

5. Decreasing ice in the Arctic seas – The extent and thickness of ice sheets have declined rapidly during the last several years and the process still continues at an alarming rate.

6. Disappearing Glaciers – Glaciers are reducing its size with relation to thickness and width. Snow caps and ice-sheets are on the decrease. Mount Kilimanjaro is a typical example for disappearing snow-caps

7. Temperature and rainfall variations – Recorded high temperatures and low temperatures had been on the increase since 1950. Adding to it the number of intense rainfall is also recorded to be on the increase.

8. Acidification of Oceans – Industrial revolution promoted growth but the surface ocean waters are polluted and acidic. The increase is about 30% and is as a result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which in turn gets absorbed by Oceans.

9. Loss of snow cover - Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier.

All the above mentioned signs clearly indicate causes for climate change bouncing back at us as we are solely responsible for these changes. Earth and its wonderful resources are a gift to man. We are responsible to plan its usage without wastage which can be termed as ‘Sustainable Development’. Puffing and fuming we blame everything and everyone for all that is happening around us, if the same time and energy could be utilized for effective planned use of resources, destruction and calamities could be reduced.

Jenny was a cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls, almost five. Waiting with her mother

at the checkout stand, she a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box. She requested her mother to buy them but she sweetly refused as its cost was two dollars but promised to buy on condition that she do some extra tasks so that in no time she can save enough money to buy them for herself. He mother also said ‘Your birthday’s only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma.”

As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbour and asked her if she could pick dandelions for ten cents.

On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at last she had enough money to buy the necklace.

Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere--Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was

when she went swimming or had a bubble bath, because her mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green.

Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked.

Jenny, “Do you love me?”“Oh yes, Daddy. You know I love

you.”“Then give me your pearls.”“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you

can have Princess--the white horse from my collection. The one you gave me. She’s my favourite.”

“That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” he brushed her cheek with a kiss.

About a week later, after the story time, Jenny’s daddy asked again, “Do you love me?”

“Daddy, you know I love you.”“Then give me your pearls.”“Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you

can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her

sleeper.”“That’s okay. Sleep well. God bless

you, little one. Daddy loves you.” As always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss.

A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek.

“What’s the matter Jenny?”Jenny didn’t say anything but lifted

her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, “Here, Daddy. It’s for you.”

With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny’s kind daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime-store necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine pearls and gave them to Jenny.

He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her genuine treasure.

What are you hanging on to?Are we holding on to well-

intentioned treasures in our life? Know our value as human beings and stop hanging on to worthless materials which can never be carried with you when your term is over in this world. Live a life beneficial and cooperative to our fellow beings and prove your worth which will linger in the minds of everyone with whom you are associated.

The lineage we often speak about is attached to ancestral goods but the true lineage lies in the values and codes of behaviour we practice. Be ready to part with the worthless treasures of this world, it will automatically get replaced by precious resources, worth being carried for generations as our lineage.

SPECIAL DAYS IN AUGUST

The Sadbhavana (means having good feelings for others) Diwas or Harmony Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the earlier

Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Having good feelings for others was the only mission of the government of Rajiv Gandhi. It is celebrated every year on 20th August in order to encourage the national peace, national integrity, love, affection and communal harmony among the Indian people of all religions.

On this day, a variety of cultural festivals and competitions are held in various states of the country. People celebrate this day by conserving the greenery, preserving the natural beauty, planting trees, protecting the environment as well as conserving the natural resources. This day is celebrated very happily in order to make awareness in the people about the necessary environmental topics. People pay respect and homage to the memorial at Veer Bhumi where he was cremated. This day is celebrated to fulfill his passion of national progress.

Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated every year in memory of Rajiv Gandhi who dreamed to make India a developed country. His vision of making India a developed country is clearly seen by the number of economic and social works for the country. His enthusiastic and inspiring words quoted for the country’s development during his speech are still remembered on his birth anniversary. His quotations are very inspiring which motivate the youths of the country to lead India. One of his quotations is as follows:

“India is an old country, but a young nation; and like the young everywhere, we are impatient. I am young and I too have a dream. I dream of an India, strong, independent, and self-reliant and in the forefront of the front ranks of the nations of the world in the service of mankind.”

that is illegal or immoral. Forgiveness is intentional and voluntary. When someone forgives someone else, they let go of negative emotions, for example vengefulness. They wish their offender well.

Forgiveness is one of the most important first steps to ending conflicts in our families, our communities and between nations. Most conflicts begin because one person or group feels they have been wronged by another person or group.

Most world religions include teachings on the nature of forgiveness, and many of these teachings provide an underlying basis for many varying modern day traditions and practices of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is a mental or spiritual process. It means no longer feeling angry at another person, or at yourself. This could be because of a crime, a sin, an offense, an insult, a difference, an error, a mistake, or a failure. Forgiveness does not require punishment or restitution. It is given without any expectation of compensation. Forgiveness may involve offering an apology. It is not motivated by pride. True forgiveness is known by deeds and not by words.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

International Forgiveness Day took place on August 07, 2016. The healing power of forgiveness

reached international attention after the end of apartheid in South Africa when the Truth and Reconciliation Commission helped to bring the bitterly divided nation together after decades of segregation and violence.

The Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance promotes the first Sunday in August as International Forgiveness Day, hoping to spread awareness about the healing power of forgiveness to create “a safer, more joyful and peaceful world.”

Forgiveness is the choice that a person makes to forgive another person for an offense or something
