The second edition of the CollinsBirdGuide (2010) – the guide most commonly used by visiting birders to
Lesvos – now includes separate distribution maps for Common Buzzard Buteobuteobuteo and Steppe
Buzzard Buteobuteovulpinus. These maps suggest that Common Buzzard occurs only as a winter visitor to
the eastern Aegean region and that Steppe Buzzard is the subspecies more likely to be encountered within

the region as a passage migrant or resident. This is not the case on Lesvos. Whilst Steppe Buzzard might be
expected on Lesvos, there are to date no confirmed records and as the status codes above indicate,
Common Buzzard is a scarce resident breeder, scarce winter visitor and scarce passage migrant. When
looking at the timing of Steppe Buzzard passage through the Middle East and nearby Turkey, and the arrival
dates on breeding grounds in northern Europe, it might be that if Steppe Buzzard does occur, it passes
through Lesvos early in spring before the arrival of visiting birders, and during this time, and the autumn,
there are simply too few birders present to pick them up. This aside, the other difficulty would be separating
the expected dark morph birds from the very similar Common Buzzard – rufous Common Buzzards
(especially birds with rufous‐toned tails) occur on the island.

Small numbers pass through Mar–Apr and even fewer recorded Aug–Oct. Common Swift often misidentified
(usually in strong sunlight) as this species. The Birds of Greece states that ‘Pallid Swifts breeding in Greece
are darker than west Mediterranean birds, intermediate between A. p. illyricus and A. p. brehmorum’,
coupled with the comment re. Common Swift above, likely confusion with Common Swift is greatly
increased.

Potamia Valley: unfortunately, in an attempt to see the birds, some individuals chose to trespass into the
olive grove, breaking down a fence in the process. Apart from being unacceptable behaviour, it serves little
purpose entering the trees where the birds are as it usually proves to be more difficult to see them and
stops the birds from performing. The majority who respected the site were eventually rewarded with good
views. Thanks go to those who challenged the trespassers.
