    INTRODUCTION

    Formybook,A Birdwatching Guide to Lesvos,Iworkedcloselywithseveralkeybirdwatchers,namelyLesvosresident

    TerryRobinson,EleniGalinou(aLesviotcurrentlyresidingonSamos)andNikosProbonas(SecretaryoftheHellenic

    RaritiesCommittee),tocompileanofficiallistofbirdsforLesvos.InordertokeeptheLesvosList,andthespecies

    recorded,uptodate,IdecidedthatIwouldattempttoproduceanannualbirdreportfrom2009(overlappingwith

    mybook).Thispublicationistheresult.AnotherresultofthiscollaborationwastheHRCinvitingthefourofusto

    formtheLesvosBirdRecordsCommittee(LBRC)tooverseetheassessmentandrecordingofthescarceroccurring

    species(includingbreedingspecies)ontheisland.

    Bird records used for this report

    ThisreportisbasedonthedatabasebuiltupbymyselffromavarietyofsourcesincludingOrnithoTopos,theLesvos

    BirdingPasiphaeBirdLogandrecordssubmitteddirecttomyself.

    Over13,000recordsmakeupthe2009Lesvosbirdrecordsdatabase.11,000(85%)ofthesewerecontributedby

    LesvosresidentTerryRobinson.Quitesimply,withoutthisamazingcontributionthereportwouldbeverymuch

    thinnerandourunderstandingoftheislandsbirdswouldbemuchpoorer.Terrysactivitiesarelargelycentredon

    thePolichnitosSaltpanssomanyaccountsarethereforeheavilyweightedtothisarea,andinsomecases,noother

    recordswerereceived.Thiscoveragedoeshoweverprovideasnapshotformanyspeciespresentontheisland.Of

    theremainingrecordsonthedatabase,Icontributedaround1500(11%)frommyvisitsinspringandautumn.The

    remainingrecords(4%)werecontributedbythoselistedintheacknowledgements.Itwouldbeamajorachievement

    ifforfuturereportswecanincreasetheamountofrecordsfromvisitingbirdersandchipawayatTerrysmonopoly!

    Inspring2009thepoolwasagainovergrownandfullofwaterfollowingoneofthewettestwintersinrecenttimes.

    TheresultwaslimitedopenwaterandvirtuallynomuddymarginsvisibleuntillateMaywhenthewaterlevelbegan

    todrop.ThepoolstillattractedafewheronsincludingGreatandLittleBitternsandPurpleHeron,andisalways

    worthalooknomatterwhatstateitisinevenevenwhentinderdryinautumnbirdsarestilldrawntothearea.

    DuringtheyearImetwithNikosPetrou, HellenicSocietyfortheProtectionofNature,aboutthelongtermfuture

    ofthispoolandotherconservationissuesonLesvos(e.g.decliningpopulationofRppellsWarbler).The

    ownershipoftheSkalaKallonisPoolandsurroundinglandiscomplicatedandanimmediatesolutionto

    preservingthissiteisunlikely.ButwithNikoshelp,wewillcontinuetolookforasolutionthatwillhopefully

    safeguardthesite.Wehopetobeabletogetmorepeopleinvolved,bothonandofftheisland,andIwill

    reportanynewsonmywebsiteandinthesereports.

    Christou(Kamares)River(p.98)ThisriverisnamedasChristouRiverontheRoadEditionsmap,butisknownlocallyastheKamaresRiver(andis

    calledthisonthenewinformationboardbytheroadbridge).Iusetheabovepresentationthroughoutthisreport.

    Viewthesaltpansonlyfromtheperimeterroad(inc.thenewsouthhidejustwestofthesaltworksentrance),the

    northwestcornerhide,theeasttrackandtheAlykesWetlands(seebelow).ViewingfromthemainKalloniMytilini

    roadcanbedangerousandthereisnoaccesstothefieldsalongthisroad.

    ThoseaccessingthebeachpastthebeachcafareremindedthatgroundnestingspeciessuchasStonecurlewoccurhereandbirdersareaskedtotakecaution.RufousBushRobincanoftenbefoundinthetamarisksalongthebeach

    here,andyouareaskednottoharassbirdsbypushingthemfrombushtobush.Stayatasensibledistanceandthe

    bird(s)willusuallycomeoutandperform.

    Alykes Wetlands (p.112)

    Thefieldsandmarshesthatlietotheeastofthesaltworksshouldbeaccessedonfootonly.Careshouldbetaken

    whenapproachingtheSaltpansfenceasgroundnestingspeciesincludingStonecurlewandKentishPloverboth

    breedinthisarea.Ifindoubt,donotapproachthefencelineandviewfromorneartothemaintrack.Pleasetryto

    avoiddisturbingthewadersonthepoolsasthosebirdersarrivingafteryouhavegonewouldliketoenjoythesebirds

    Flooded fields opposite the Kalloni Saltworks entrancethiswetlandwasoneofthemaindrawsduringspring2009

    attractingdoublefigurecountsofBlackStorksotherherons,marshterns,wadersandwildfowl.Thesefieldsrequire

    extensivewinterrainsbeforetheyflood.May2009SteveDudley|LesvosBirding

    ThissiteunderwentextensivetreethinningduringMay(nottotaldestructionasreportedbysome)anditishoped

    thatitwillstillholdbreedingbirdsin2010.

    NotethatthebestwaytoaccessthePlataniatrackfromtheNapiValleyendistoapproachfromthenorth(if

    travellingfromthesouthdrivepasttheturntoPlataniaandthenturnroundsafelyneartherubbishtipandreturn

    southtoapproachfromthenorth).Takecarepullingoffthemainroadontothetrackastheimmediatejunction
