Message Mr. Philp & Mme Laflamme

Thank you for a great start to the year. It’s clear that LBP is a

wonderful school, with delightful kids and an amazing staff. It has

been a pleasure getting to know some of our community,

especially through our successful Meet the Teacher evening that

happened in early September, as well as, during our first School

Council meeting that took place this week. We look forward to

continuing to build a partnership with families, as this connection

is extremely important as we move forward in the school year.

After a month of school, it is clear that our staff and students have

settled into school and classroom routines. We continue to

establish an understanding of the expectations in the school and in

classrooms, promoting a sense of kindness throughout the school.

Over the next few months we continue to encourage families to

keep in contact with teachers to monitor student progress and

their wellbeing.

We look forward to a great month ahead!

LBP Families - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Many of our School Council programs depend on our annual QSP fundraising campaign…. this year we have had a bit of a slow start to

our campaign and we are hoping you can help turn things around.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend – we ask you take some time with your student to visit www.qsp.ca or complete your paper forms with your

QSP orders for magazines or cookie dough. Remember – our School ID is 3725553. By ordering through QSP – your student is eligible

to collect fun prizes throughout the campaign – and all students who place orders are also eligible for some fantastic end-of-campaign

prizes, including gift cards and other special prizes too! Ask your friends and family if it is time to renew their favourite subscription or stock

their freezer with some yummy treats.

For those that might not use these products themselves – there are many items that make great gifts for upcoming birthdays or holidays!

We have set a sales target for the school of $35,000 - and as of today we have only reached $4,000. We are still striving to reach this goal

so we don’t have to adjust any of our planned School Council supported activities throughout the year.

Last spring, grade 3 and grade 6 students participated in writing the EQAO assessment. This assessment is conducted on a yearly basis and is a standardized measure of both the math and language curricula. At the conclusion of a testing cycle, EQAO provides schools with school based results, as well as, with individual student results. The public school report provides an overview of contextual information and student performance data, including the results for the board and province. This school based assessment information will be used as an additional source of information to support school improvement and overall student achievement. It is also important to know that this information is not used by the board to rank or compare schools. Outlined above are our school based results (DARK BLUE are school based results).

School Council

This week school council met for the first time. Discussed at the meeting were details connected to the function of council, membership, and potential goals/initiative for this school year. All

families are welcome throughout the year at any of our council meetings. We will share upcoming meeting dates with our community through our monthly newsletters, and our Friday communication. Thank you to everyone who came out to contribute to the positive discussions

at council.

Electronic Transmission of School Materials

As we are an Eco-Friendly school, once again this year we will be sending as much correspondence home electronically as we possibly can. If you have not already provided us

with your email address(es), or if you wish to remove/update your existing email address(es), please send an email to Ingrid Clarke at [email protected] indicating your child/ren’s

name as well as the new email addresses you would like us to keep on file.

If your family requires hard copies of school based information, please speak to the office.

LUNCH ARRANGEMENTS & STUDENT SAFETY Reminder

While most of our students eat lunch at school, some of those who live close to the school, go

home for lunch.

Some students in grades 7 and 8 occasionally purchase their lunch off school property. As administrators, we are entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring student safety.

The school’s responsibility is clear in this regard. While we can monitor behaviour and ensure safety while students are on school property, it is impossible to do so for students who leave

the school premises.

We encourage parents to carefully consider any decision to allow their child to leave school grounds for lunch, especially if direct adult supervision is not available.

Parents who periodically make arrangements for their child to leave for lunch are asked to send a signed note to the office. Please note that we are unable to accept/manage email

messages regarding lunch arrangements. Students are expected to sign out at the office at the beginning of the lunch hour and return to school to sign back in, in time for afternoon

attendance.

Lunch Assistants

This

This week Mr. Philp and Mme. Laflamme met with our school lunch assistants to review a variety of school safety protocols, as well as, our approach to school based restorative conversations. We thank the team of lunch assistants for the work they do each day.

Although it may feel premature, we are already beginning to plan for

Remembrance Day. If you have any pictures of family members who have

served in the military, please take digital pictures of the pictures and email to

[email protected] for it to be included in a slideshow. Please add their

name and any information about the person you want to share. The slideshow

will be played during our Remembrance Day assembly.

This year we will be having two assemblies. The assembly for grades 3, 4 and

5's will take place at 9:15 on Friday November 9th, and the assembly for the

6's, 7's and 8's will take place at 10:15 on Friday November 9th. If you have

any memorabilia that you can loan the school, we would be honoured to place

it in our locked and secure showcase for the students to look at.

Thank you!

Remembrance Day

Halloween

Each year, some of our students celebrate

the long-standing tradition of Halloween.

Students celebrating this occasion in costume

at our school must comply with the Safe

School’s policy.

Costume accessories including, but not

limited to, toy guns, knives, axes, swords, etc.

are not in compliance with York Region

District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy

#668, and thus are not allowed at school.

More direction around Halloween will be

shared through our weekly Friday

communication throughout the month of

October.

Terry Fox Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who supported our Terry

Fox Fundraiser. This year we raised over $600 in

support of the Terry Fox Foundation.

HEAD LICE

Like everywhere else, there is the potential for head lice in York

Region and at Lester B. Pearson. It’s important to check your child’s

head if they’ve been in contact with someone who has lice or if they

appear to have an itchy scalp and are scratching a lot. Don’t panic!

Be sensitive to your child’s feelings and check your child’s head right

away. Checking for lice takes patience, diligence and plenty of time.

Effective treatment means:

Check all family members

Treat only family members that have head lice

Apply a head lice treatment as directed Remove all the nits

(eggs)

Know the facts – talk to a Public Health Nurse. If your

children have lice, please let the school know, there is a

policy we need to follow regarding lice.

SCHOOL BUS SERVICE

School bus service may be cancelled from time to time due to inclement weather, extreme

temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop

alternate care/ transportation arrangements. Since some bussing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m.

or earlier, all cancellation decisions must be made by 6:00 a.m. to ensure the safety of our

students. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with school bus

companies servicing York Region.

Decisions are based on several factors including precipitation, air temperature and road conditions. Please note

the following:

• A decision to cancel school bus transportation may be system wide (where all buses in York Region are

cancelled) or municipality specific (where buses in one or more municipalities are cancelled).

• If school bus transportation in your municipality is cancelled and your child attends school in a different

municipality where service is operational, your child will not be transported to/from school.

• If school bus transportation in your municipality is operational and your child attends school in a different

municipality where service is cancelled, your child will not be transported to/from school.

• If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon.

Therefore, students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations

after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:
