INVITATORY CAROL Peter Warlock (1894-1930)

I saw a fair maiden sitten and sing, She lulled a little child, a sweetë lording. Lullay, mine liking, my dear son, my sweeting, Lullay, my dear heart, mine own dear darling.

That same lord is he that made allë thing, Of allë lordis he is Lord, of allë kingës King.

There was mickle melody at that childës birth, All that were in Heaven’s bliss they made mickle mirth.

Angelys bright they sung that night and saiden to that child: ‘Blessed be thou and so be she that is both meek and mild.’

Pray we now to that child, and to his mother dear, Grant them his blessing that now maken cheer.

SIGN OF THE CROSS AND GREETING

COLLECT from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Advent

V. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.

R. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Let us pray. O God, who, fulfilling the promise made to our Fathers, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to become the Mother of the Savior, grant that we may follow her example, for her humility was pleasing to you and her obedience profitable to us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

LESSON Luke 11:27-28 read by Alexandria White

Blessed is the womb that carried you.

CAROL Malcolm Archer (b.1952)

A Virgin most pure, as the prophets do tell, Hath brought forth a baby, as it hath befell; To be our Redeemer from death, hell, and sin, Which Adam’s transgression had wrapped us in. Aye, and therefore be merry; Rejoice, and be you merry; Set sorrow aside; Christ Jesus our Savior was born at this tide.

In Bethlehem Jewry a city there was, Where Joseph and Mary together did pass, And there to be taxed with many one mo, For Caesar commanded the same should be so.

But when they had entered the city so fair, A number of people so mighty was there, That Joseph and Mary, whose substance was small, Could find in the inn there no lodging at all.

Then they were constrained in a stable to lie, Where horses and asses they used for to tie; There lodging so simple they took it no scorn, But against the next morning our Savior was born.

Then God sent an angel from heaven so high, To certain poor shepherds in fields where they lie, And bade them no longer in sorrow to stay, Because that our Savior was born on this day.

COLLECT of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

V. God gave her his help from the dawning of her days.

R. The Most High has made his dwelling place a holy temple.

Let us pray. O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that as you preserved her from every stain by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw, so, through her intercession, we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth; Transeamus. [Let us follow.]

~Anonymous, c. 1420

There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu; Alleluia.

For in this rose contained was Heaven and earth in little space; Res miranda. [Wondrous thing.]

By that rose we may well see That he is God in persons three, Pari forma. [Equal in form.]

CAROL Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) Cantique de Noël (O Holy Night) arr. James D. Wetzel (b. 1987)

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees; Oh hear the angel voices. O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night divine.

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need; he guardeth us from danger, Behold your King; before him lowly bend. Behold your King; before him lowly bend.

V. The queen stands at your right hand.

R. Arrayed in gold.

Let us pray. O God, who made the Mother of your Son to be our Mother and our Queen, graciously grant that, sustained by her intercession, we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom the glory promised to your children. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

INTERCESSIONS

Let us praise God our almighty Father, who wished that Mary, his Son’s mother, be celebrated by each generation. Now in need, we ask: Mary, full of grace, intercede for us.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us. You made Mary the mother of mercy, – may all who are faced with trials feel her motherly love.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us. You wished Mary to be the mother of the family in the home of Jesus and Joseph, – may all mothers of families foster love and holiness through her intercession.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us. You gave Mary strength at the foot of the cross and filled her with joy at the resurrection of your Son, – lighten the hardships of those who are burdened and deepen their sense of hope.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us. You made Mary open to your word and faithful as your servant, – through her intercession make us servants and true followers of your Son.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us. You crowned Mary queen of heaven, – may all the dead rejoice in your kingdom with the saints for ever.

R. Mary, full of grace, intercede for us.

NOTES ABOUT THE STATIONS

The Immaculate Conception is depicted in a statute on the eastern-facing (reverse) side of the Rood (Old English for crucifix) opposite the Crucifixion scene. As the booklet published after the dedication of the church describes, ‘How appropriate; this cross, by its anticipated merits, held back from the soul of Mary the polluted tie of Original Sin. Behold the first fruits of the Rood!’ Above the statute, the title Regina caeli proclaims Mary as Queen of heaven. At her foot is a monogram with a lily, and on the beam itself, gold lettering reads Ave Maria, gratia, plena, Dominus tecum benedicta tu. Beneath, in the center of the beam, in black letters on a parchment-style background is a text from the Gradual of the Immaculate Conception: Benedicta es tu Virgo Maria a Domino excelso prae omnibus mulieribus super terram (Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, by the Lord, the Most High God, above all women on the earth). The Rosary Altar is dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and its central panel depicts St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers, receiving the rosary from Mary. The alabaster panel below it shows Pope Saint Pius V (a Dominican) blessing the Christian fleet before the Battle of Lepanto, the victory of which prompted the institution of the Feast of Our Lady of Victory (of the Rosary). The Annunciation Station is made here as the first of the Joyful Mysteries. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a recent addition to the church and it commemorates the Blessed Virgin’s four apparitions to Juan Diego in December, 1531 outside of Mexico City. Under this title which is associated with the Visitation, Mary elicits particular devotion from Catholics in the Americas. The Rose Window The upper portion (the ‘rose’) depicts ‘the whole company of heaven, and all the powers therein,’ with the nine choirs of angels. The five lancets below the rose itself are devoted to the original fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. The Blessed Lady holds the commanding position at the top of the central lancet. From her prayer-clasped hands stream roses: five gold for the Glorious; five violet for the Sorrowful; and five white for the Joyful. The other four lancets are devoted to the celebrated leaders who have won renown by their devotion to the Rosary and by their zeal in its propagation. The symbols of the Mysteries of the Rosary are designed in tiers, with the Glorious on top, the Sorrowful in the middle, and the Joyful on the bottom. This window was designed and executed by Charles J. Connick of Boston.

Page 23: LESSONS AND CAROLS IN HONOR OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The Holy Name Chapel The central panel of the polychromed Altar triptych in this Chapel is a painting of the Presentation. Simeon holds the Christ Child while Mary kneels before him. St. Joseph stands behind her with the offering of two turtle doves. Jewish law prescribed the offering of a yearling lamb for a burnt-offering and a turtle dove or pigeon for a sin-offering, but allowed the poor to offer two turtle doves (or a turtle dove and a pigeon) instead. This Feast forty days after Christmas commemorates three things: the obedience of Mary to the Mosaic Law’s ritual of purification – according to Leviticus 12:6, the period of impurity after giving birth was forty days; the presentation of Jesus in the Temple in which he, as the firstborn son, is consecrated to the Lord according to the Law; and the meeting of the infant Jesus with the aged Simeon – the Occursus Domini, or Hypapante as Eastern Church calls it. The Pietà developed as an artistic form representing the Sorrowful Mother in Germany around 1300, reached Italy about 1400, and was especially popular in Central European devotion. Although Michelangelo’s famous sculpture in St. Peter’s Basilica is in marble, many early examples were done in wood to emphasize Christ’s crucifixion. The Statue of the Porta Caeli was carved by Edward Ardolino who also created St. Vincent’s baptismal font. Mary stands crowned as the intercessory ‘Gate of Heaven’ and guides people from this vale of tears (symbolically, the Nave) into heaven (the Sanctuary) as demarcated by the Rood and, formerly, the altar rail. This shrine occupies a similar position to the one of Our Lady of Paris in Notre Dame Cathedral and another in the Church of the Martyrs in Cambridge.

MUSIC NOTES

Peter Warlock, a pseudonym for Philip Arnold Heseltine, is best known for his choral works and a corpus of about 150 songs. After restless years at both Christ Church, Oxford (where he studied classics) and University College, London (where he studied language, literature, and philosophy), he became a music critic of the Daily Mail for a short time and for the rest of his life continued to dabble in musical journalism and criticism. He wrote biographies of Frederick Delius, a personal friend, and Carlo Gesualdo, and his research and editions of Elizabethan and folk music, particular of his own Celtic heritage, spurred on the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century. Malcolm Archer is a renowned organist, conductor, composer, and recently-retired Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, UK. He previously served as choirmaster of Wells and St. Paul’s Cathedrals, succeeding John Scott.

Page 24: LESSONS AND CAROLS IN HONOR OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

24

Englishman Jonathan Lane spent his professional career in business and finance, but has been a choral composer for decades and is a trustee of London-based professional choir Tenebrae. Chicago native Edwin Fissinger served in the Air Force during World War II and subsequently entered the American Conservatory of Music where he studied with Leo Sowerby and directed its choir 1947 to 1954. He then was a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois from 1954 to 1957, receiving his doctorate in 1965. From 1957 to 1967, he was chairman of the music department and choral director at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and from 1967 until his retirement in 1985 held similar positions at the North Dakota State University. A respected music editor and clinician, Fissinger was a charter member of the American Choral Directors Association. Adolphe Adam, son of composer and professor Jean-Louis Adam, likewise became a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. While best remembered today for his Christmas carol Cantique de Noël, his operas and ballets, especially Giselle (1841) which is still considered a masterwork of the genre, were very popular during his lifetime. Charles Wood, born in Armagh, Ireland, was in the inaugural class of the Royal College of Music where he studied with Sir Charles V. Stanford (a fellow Irishman) and Sir C. Hubert H. Parry. Wood taught at both R.C.M. and Cambridge University where he was also Organist of Gonville and Caius College for a time. Like Stanford and Parry, Wood is remembered for his Anglican church music and for his influence as a teacher; his pupils included William Harris, Herbert Howells, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Herbert Howells, a Gloucester-born composer whose sound and name defined the 20th century Anglican church musical aesthetic, studied at the Royal College of Music with the Anglican giants of his preceding generation: Sir Herbert Brewer, Parry, Stanford, and Wood. Beyond his contributions to the Anglican repertoire, he wrote a number of Latin motets as well as a Mass Ordinary for Catholic liturgical use.
