C the central region of an atom

Key Concepts4 Relate Explain how the terms atom and

element are related.

5 Summarize What are the three main classes of elements? Provide two physical properties for each class of elements.

6 Infer The atomic number of barium is 56. What do you know about the subatomic particles in an atom of this element?

7 Explain Atoms contain positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons. Why does an ordinary atom have no charge?

4. Sample answer: An element is made up of only one type of atom. Although an element contains many atoms, all of them are the same.

5. Sample answer: The three main classes of elements are metals, non-metals, and metalloids. Two physi-cal properties of metals are their lus-ter and their ability to conduct elec-tric current and energy as heat well. Two physical properties of nonmet-als are their lack of luster and their brittleness. Two physical properties of metalloids are their moderate ability to conduct electric current and energy as heat (semiconductor) and their moderate amount of malle-ability.

6. Sample answer: Atoms of barium contain 56 protons and 56 electrons. Barium atoms also contain neutrons, but the number of neutrons is not indicated by the atomic number.

7. An atom has an equal number of positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons, so the charges cancel each other out and the atom is neutral.

8. blue–oxygen; red–silicon; green–aluminum; purple–potassium

9. oxygen

10. Sample answer: Amazonite is found on Earth’s surface. The elements in the chart are abundant in Earth’s crust.

11. Sample answer: The heat could be transferred to Earth’s surface. Earth’s core, mantle, and crust all contain elements that are metals, and metals are good conductors of thermal energy.
