Studio Process

Fold a 9” x 12” paper in half and cut a slit about halfway from the folded edge of the paper to the middle. Fold back the edges of the slit as shown here in the technique illustration. Carefully fold every fold back and forth. This will make the mouth work better. Pull out the folded paper to form an open mouth. Carefully close the large shape so the mouth is open.

Fold the paper closed and draw a face or body that goes completely around the mouth. Try to include as much of the paper as possible so little will be cut away. With the paper closed, cut out the head or body.

To make a backing for the face or body, fold a second sheet of construction paper in half. Glue ½ of the face shape to the second sheet of paper with their folds aligned. Be sure to fold the mouth out of the way so it doesn’t get glued down. Do the same for the second side of the face.

Studio Evaluation Criteria1. Pop-up character’s mouth opens and closes as the paper is opened and closed

2. Cut-paper and drawn details clearly add to the meaning of the character’s identity

3. Details are securely attached so they stay on the art as it moves.
