This theme is based upon the book Mix It Up, so you may want to focus on that book pri-

marily. We added a variety of books about colors should you want more ideas, just in

case.



Math Color collecting - Get

three baskets. Gather

red items in one, blue

items in another, and

yellow items in the last

basket. (TF)

Color patterns - Use the

items gathered on the

first day to make color

patterns. Alternatively,

use the printable cards.

Color counting - Use the

items gathered on the

first day and count how

many things you found

for each basket. Discuss

which basket has the

most and which has the

least. (TF)

Number cards - Use the

printable cards to ex-

plore number identifica-

tion. Place them in nu-

merical order.

Making numbers -

Create numbers using

primary colors (use dot

markers, pompoms

dipped in paint, stickers,

etc.)

experiment - Explore col-

Color mixing - Mix

primary colors of finger

paint. Explore what hap-

pens with each combina-

tion. Record the results on

paper or in a science jour-

nal. (TF)

Experiment with lighter

shades - Explain that light-

er shades can be made

by mixing a color with

white. Experiment with

creating lighter shades of

various colors of paint.

Experiment with darker

shades - Explain that

darker shades can be

made by combining a

color with black. Experi-

ment with making darker

shades of paint.

Make your own color

palette - Use a paper

plate to make your own

color palette. Put red at 12

o’clock, yellow at 4

o’clock, and blue at 8

o’clock. Mix red and

yellow, and paint orange

at 2 o’clock. Mix yellow

and blue, and paint green

at 6 o’clock. Mix blue and

red, and paint purple at 10

o’clock.

Literacy Mix it up name game -

Write letters of child's

name on small cards (or

use printable letters) and

full name on longer card.

Use container (canister or

wipes box) with slit cut in

top. Have child say a letter

from his name and put it in

the box. Once all letters

are in shake to "mix it up".

Then open up the contain-

er and put the letters in the

correct order.

Color poems - Introduce

color poems for red, yel-

low, and blue and repeat

throughout the week. You

can find poem ideas here.

Color chart - Make a

chart with three columns.

Label one red, one blue,

and one yellow. Make a

list of things in your home

that are each color. (TF)

Build color words - Use

letter cards or other

alphabet manipulatives to

make color words. Use the

printables included with

these plans if preferred.

Emergent reader - Use

the printable reader to talk

about colors. Add illustra-

tions to each page.

Alternatively, make a book

about rainbow colors.

Other Squish art - Add a drop of

two primary colors on a

paper. Place another

piece of paper on top and

press down. Observe what

happens. To extend this,

go back once the paper is

dried and use markers or

other materials to create a

multi-media piece of art.

Use different items to

squish on the paint to ex-

plore different textures. (TF)

Sensory bottles - Create

glitter jars, one for each of

the primary colors.

Hand print art - Inspired

by a page out of Mix It Up,

create hand print and fin-

gerprint art. Make finger-

prints of different colors on

a piece of paper. Once

those prints are dry, add a

white hand print to the

center of the paper (use

either white paint or white

construction paper for the

hand). (TF)

Fine motor color mixing -

Place water in various

containers. Add blue, yel-

low, and red food coloring

to 3 of the jars. Let children

use eye droppers to ex-

plore mixing the colored

water. (TF)

Art show - Invite friends

and family over for an art

show at the end of the

week.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly

Math

One-to-one correspondence -

Use the printable number cards,

along with red, yellow, and blue

pompoms. Children place the

correct number of pompoms by

each card.

Literacy

Pretend play art museum - Set

up a pretend art museum in the

house. Kids can pretend to be

artists showing their work, museum

workers, or museum visitors. (TF)

Science

Colorful bottles - Leave the col-

orful glitter jars out for scientific

observation. (TF)

Science Journals - Leave sci-

ence journals out for children to

record their observations through-

out the week.

Sensory

Squish bags - Put clear hair gel

into 3 Ziploc bags. Add red food

coloring or liquid watercolors to

one bag, yellow to another, and

blue to the third. Place on a light

table or by a window. Overlap

the bags and observe how the

colors combine. (TF)

Block Play

Magnetic tiles - Add magnetic

tiles (or other see-through

block manipulatives) to the

block area. Add flash lights or

glow sticks for a variation. (TF)

Arts and Crafts

Open-ended finger painting -

Place finger painting paper and

primary color finger paints out.

Children can explore and paint as

they see fit. (TF)

Shake and tilt art - Place paper

on a baking tray. Drip liquid wa-

tercolors or watered down paint

onto the paper. Move the tray

and see what happens to the

paint.
