    Textbook: English My Love

    Unit 1: London

    Lesson 3: The Tower of London

    Type of lesson: acquisition of new knowledge

    Lesson aim: 1. to have students practise speaking, reading, listeningand writing skills;2. to have students extract specific information from alistening material3. to have students learn about the Tower of London4. to have students read the descriptions and completethe blank spaces in the map

    Materials: students book, handouts, blackboard, flipchart, videoprojector, laptop.

    Techniques and methods: conversation, pair work, group work

    PROCEDURE:

    I. Starting the lesson (1)The teacher greets the students and makes sure the conditions areproper to start the lesson.

  • II. Checking previous knowledge (5)The students were divided into groups. Each group had to choose amonument in London and to make a presentation of it. A student ofeach group reads the presentation but he/she is not allowed to saythe name of the monument he/she has described. The other groupshave to guess the name of the monument.

    III. Warm up (2)The teacher writes on the blackboard the names of the monumentsdescribed by the students and underlines The tower of London

    IV. Presentation and practice (40)The teacher writes on the blackboard the activities that are going tobe done in that class:

    1. The map of the Tower of London2. The history of the Tower of London3. The story of the Tower of London

    Activity 1: reading and speaking (15)Aim: to have students read the descriptions and complete the blankspaces in the map

    1. teacher divides the students into groups of four2. teacher introduces the name of the activity The map of the

  • 3. students read in silence the paragraphs about the history of theTower of London and rearrange them in the right order, lookingfor clues in each paragraph

    4. teacher asks the students to read the paragraphs in the rightorder

    Activity 3: listening and writing (10)Aim: to have students extract specific information from a listeningmaterial

    1. teacher gives the students the transcript and handouts forthe video they are going to watch and gives the students instructionsfor the task

    2. students watch the video and mark the sentences in theirhandouts as true or false

    3. teacher asks the students to read the true sentences and thefalse ones

    V. Setting homework (1)The students have the exercises III.1 as homework, page 13.

    VI. Ending the lesson (1)The teacher appreciates the students performance byencouraging, praising and giving them marks.

    Theres a Ceremony that takes place at the Tower of London at 9.30every night that anyone can book tickets and go along and see but no-one

  • is allowed to film it but luckily we can tell you about it WITHOUT beingaccused of treason.

    The Ceremony of the Keys has taken place here within the walls ofthis great fortress on each and every night for over 700 years, basicallysince about 1280. The reasons for the security here in the tower, we hadkings and queens living here until about 1603, the crown jewels are storedhere within the walls, the Royal mint was here until 1810, prisoners werekept here from 1100 right the way through to the second world war, sotheres always been a great need for security. The doors have to besecured at night to keep everyone who lives here safe and to keep thetreasure safe.

    Your savings will be safe as well because you dont have to pay tosee the ceremony. During the day, youre spoilt for choice. There isenough historical intrigue for 20 Hollywood thrillers.

    Right ladies and gentlemen you are now stood in front of the mostfamous, or should I say the most infamous gate in the world. TraitorsGate, built on orders of Edward I. he was looking for a safer, moreconvenient entrance to the Tower of London

    If superstition is your thing, theres some of that too

    Should these ravens ever leave the tower of London then the whitetower shall fall and crumble into dust

    Of course there are endless stories of imprisonments andexecutions

    The last prisoners to be kept here were German prisoners of warand the last man to be executed here was a man by the name of GirdolphStruubbles who was a German spy.

    Last but not least there are the Crown Jewels, but like the ceremonyof the keys, no-ones allowed to film those either
