Lesson Plan
The Three Billy Goats Gruff – BR, DR, GR, TR initial sounds
Grade Grade 1
Subject – Language Arts
Goals Students will strengthen their rblend word and sound recognition.
Objective SWBAT identify the initial sounds of words beginning with br, dr, gr and tr that are shown on game cards by placing a marker on the correct initial sound on a game board and by placing the picture of the word in the appropriate column on a word sort worksheet.
Standards Maryland College and Career Ready Curriculum Framework English Language Arts: Standard RF3.a: Know the spellingsound correspondence for common consonant digraphs.
Anticipatory Set Draw students into the lesson by pulling out the puppets of the three billy goats gruff. Ask students if they know the story and talk about how the three are different in size. Ask what they think of the puppets.
Introduce the rblend words found in the book/write on white board for students to see. Emphasize the initial sounds:
● Talk about the sound effects the author uses: trip, trap ● Emphasize the other rblend words that are in the story. ● Words that begin with tr sound: troll, tramping ● Words with br sound: bridge, brothers ● Gr sound: gruff, grass
Direct Instruction Read The Three Billy Goats Gruff to students. Use puppets to act out what is happening in the book or perhaps let students use the puppets unless that will be too distracting to students.
After reading, have a discussion about the book in general (about 5 minutes) and then talk some more about words that begin with br, gr, tr ask the students if they noticed those words in the story. Have students practice making those sounds and think of words that begin with those sounds, br,

gr, tr and also introduce dr since that is included in the game. Write student words on the board.
Guided Practice
Introduce students to the Billy Goats Gruff game they will play. Explain the directions and show them the game cards that will have br, dr, gr, and tr initial sounds. When they choose a card, they will move their marker to the correct spot on the game board to correspond with the initial sound of the item pictured on the card. Model how the game will be played.
Have students break out into groups of 4 or the best grouping for this class. Ask if there are any questions. Once those are addressed, students will repeat the instructions to me and the class to ensure that everyone understands how to play the game.
Independent Practice: Students have fun playing the game while reinforcing their rblend reading skills. I will circulate to assess if students are able to identify the initial sounds of br, dr, gr and tr. Students are in groups, with higher students matched up with lower students to help those who may be struggling. For students who may be having trouble (hopefully I will have this information before the lesson) I will pay special attention to see if they will require reteaching.
After the game is finished and the games are picked up and put away, students will complete the attached worksheets independently after being given instructions and modeling of how the worksheet should be completed.
Closure
After everything is put away and students complete the worksheet, we will talk about the game and if they enjoyed playing. I will ask if the activity helped them identify the br, dr, gr, and tr sounds if they feel more comfortable and if that made the worksheet activity easier. This plus the assessment will be helpful in determining if the lesson needs to be retaught.
Materials:
● The Three Billy Goats Gruff book ● Billy Goats Gruff puppets ● Billy Goats Gruff game boards and game cards 5 or 6 sets depending on how many students

● Worksheets for students to complete with pictures of rblend words that need to be cut out and pasted onto a template with the appropriate sounds.
● Pencils, scissors and glue sticks for students.
Assessment: Formative Students will be observed while playing the Billy Goats Gruff game to determine if they are able to identify the initial rblend sounds correctly by placing their game markers or coins on the proper space on the game board.
Summative Students will complete the attached worksheet by cutting and pasting the pictures in the proper rblend column.
