Lesson Title
We are all part of a whole!• Our lesson will help students understand the
various parts that comprise a whole fraction up to 12/12.
3rd Grade Math
• We will be working with numbers and operations, specifically fractions.
• Our lesson will take 50 minutes, or one class period, to complete.
• We will implement a one teach- one drift style of teaching.
SC Curriculum Standard• Standard 3-2: The student will demonstrate
through the mathematical processes an understanding of the representation of whole numbers and fractional parts; the addition and subtraction of whole numbers; accurate, efficient, and generalizable methods of multiplying whole numbers; and the relationships among multiplication, division, and related basic facts.
• Indicator 3-2.5: Understand fractions as parts of a whole.

Instructional Objectives
• The learning outcome for this lesson:The students will identify and create fraction sets up to 12/12 with 100% accuracy.
• We selected 12/12 because of the relevance to other items students encounter on a daily basis such as a carton of eggs, a dozen cookies, and 12 months in a year.
Materials, resources & technology• Manipulatives – Fruit Loops and counters• Construction paper circles• Flash cards and folder• Concrete items – books, pencils and students paired with
a partner
Description of the Lesson
• Model for 10 minutes• Use of concrete materials such as books and pencils
• Lead for 10 minutes• Students will use Fruit Loops during a guided
practice exercise• Independent practice for 10 minutes• Classwide peer tutoring using flash cards and
counters• Assessment for the remaining 15 minutes
