FESTIVALS IN MALAYSIA A LESSON PLAN Aim: Exposing students’ understanding on festivals celebrated in Malaysia. Lesson Objectives: 1. To increase students’ ability to learn more festivals in Malaysia. 2. To be able to give points in a mind-map based on the text. 3. To be able to ask for and give information politely. Pictures - festivals 3. Handouts – reading text The Lesson Set induction :( 5 minutes) The teacher comes to class in traditional Malay costume. He wears songkok and samping. He tells the pupils that he is very happy to wear the traditional costume. He asks them what they know about the costume. The LessonSet induction :( 5 minutes)The teacher comes to class in traditional Malay costume. He wears songkok and samping. He tells the pupils that he is very happy to wear the traditional costume. He asks them what they know about the costume. The teacher encourages them to speak by asking them questions based on the topic. The teacher highlights the importance of tolerance and respect for each beliefs, customs and traditions.Presentation: (15 minutes)Activity 1:Teacher shows slides of different festivals in Malaysia. The slides are on Hari Raya Aidilfitri,Chinese New Year,Deepavali,Christmas and Vaishaki. The teacher tells the pupils about the culture, costume, food, language, belief for each presentation of the slides based on the festivals.Activity 2:Following activity 1, the teacher shows pictures of festivals that have been discussed earlier. The pupils supposed to respond to the pictures and talk about it by relating their experiences and what they have learnt through the slide presentation.Activity 3:Students are asked to form groups consisting of five members. Each group will receive a text on festivals. The texts are on celebrations of Hari Raya Aidilfitri , Deepavali , Chinese New Year , Christmas and Vaisakhi. Each group receives different texts with pictures. The task is, the pupils have to come up with a mind map based on the text and pictures. Each group leader will be telling the whole class about a festival based on the mind map. The teacher shows a video clip on other festivals celebrated in Malaysia such as Hari Gawai. Closure: (10 minutes)Teacher concludes the lesson by playing a song for Chinese New Year celebration. Teacher tells the meaning of the song. The pupils sing the song together with the teacher by referring to the lyrics in the video clip.
