Main Show the pupils the assessment criteria (slide 5) and ask them to reflect on what they have done over the last few lessons. This will give pupils an idea about which challenge they should try to complete. Ask pupils to select an appropriate challenge. Explain that the purpose of this lesson is to assess their understanding so although they can ask a friend for help they must be honest when they come to self assess at the end of the lesson. Explain that if they find their chosen challenge either too hard or too easy they should swap for a different challenge. Ensure that pupils are aware that they only have this lesson to complete their chosen challenge so they must stay on task and work to the best of their ability to be able to accurately assess themselves. Plenary Print off slides 12 and 13 two to a page on pink A4 paper. Ask pupils to look at their assessment sheet and colour in all the levels they feel that they achieved independently. Explain to pupils that you will be marking their work and completing the ‘my teacher’s question’ box. Probing QuestionsLevel 4

Find areas by counting squares and part squares of shapes drawn on squared paper.

How do you go about finding the perimeter of a shape? How are the perimeter of a shape and the area of a shape different? How do you remember which is which?

Level 5

Find any one of the area, width and length of a rectangle, given the other two.

Find the area and perimeter of simple compound shapes made from rectangles.

For a given area (e.g. 24cm2) find as many possible rectangles with whole number dimensions as you can? How did you do it?Always true, sometimes or never true? ‘If one rectangle has a larger perimeter than another one, then it will also have a larger area.’

Level 6

Calculate the area of triangle and parallelograms

The area of a triangle is 12cm2. What are the possible lengths of the base and height? Why do you have to multiply the base by the perpendicular height to find the area of a parallelogram? You can use a diagram to explain your answer. What other formulae for the area of 2D shapes do you know? Is there a formula for the area of every 2D shape?

Today’s Task :-

• Produce a drawing of a classroom containing 5 different sized / shaped desks to seat 30 pupils.

• Calculate the perimeter and area of each desk top and provide a quote for the cost of the desks for the client.

Assessment Criteria

To produced a drawing of a classroom and calculate the area and perimeter of the desks. You should show how you worked out the area and perimeter.

Level 4 ChallengeDesign a classroom with 5 different sized rectangular desks, drawn on squared paper. (1cm = 1m) Calculate the perimeter and area of the desks by counting squares.

Level 5 ChallengeDesign a classroom with 5 different sized rectangular desks. Do not use squared paper. Write on the measurements of the sides of each desk. Calculate the perimeter and the area of the desks using formula. You must show all your working out.

Level 6 ChallengeDesign a classroom which has 5 different shaped desks, a rectangle, a triangle, a parallelogram, a trapezium and a kite. Write on the measurements of the sides of each desk. Do not use squared paper. Calculate the area and the perimeter of each desk using formula. You must show all your working out.

The Task

You work as part of a classroom design company. A client has approached you to design and give a quote for classroom furniture. They have a few stipulations which you need to follow. You will need to provide a quote for the cost of the desks, you can either choose which type of desk to supply or you can provide more than one quote.

Page 9: Lesson Plan - APP Area and Perimeter Mental and Oral Starter Pupils to complete a ‘Heard the Word’ grid and compare it to grid they completed at the start

The Client’s Stipulations

• The desks can be any shape but they must be large enough to seat pupils in groups, so more than one pupil at every desk.

• There must be 5 desks in the room.

• 30 pupils must be seated around these 5 desks, however, group sizes can change so you could have a smaller desk seating 2 or 3 pupils and larger desks seating 4 or more pupils.

Providing a quote for the client

• Economy desk tops costs £5 per metre2.

• Standard desk tops costs £7.50 per metre2.

• Luxury desk tops costs £11.75 per metre2.

You must round to the nearest whole metre when calculating cost.

Your work will be assessed on:

• The accuracy of your calculations.

• The presentation of your ideas and designs.

• The presentation of your calculations and results.
