AMERICA 1800

• By 1800, nearly 1,000,000 Americans lived between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Most were farmers.

• They relied on the Mississippi to ship their wheat and corn to New Orleans.

• From there it would go to ports along Atlantic coast

1795 America and Spain

• Spain, controlled New Orleans, sometimes threatened to close the port to Americans. In 1795, President Washington sent Thomas Pinckney to find a way to keep the port open.

• Pinckney Treaty – Spain lets Americans ship their goods down the Mississippi and store them in New Orleans

1800

• Spain signed a treat giving Louisiana back to France.

France and Napoleon

• Napoleon Bonaparte – wanted to take over Europe and probably would of tried for America too.

• He suffered losses and needed money.

• Sells Louisiana for $15 million to America

The purchase

• Jefferson decided to try to buy New Orleans.

• He sent Robert Livingston and James Monroe to buy New Orleans and West Florida from Napoleon. They could offer $10 Million.

• France needed money.

• Tallyrand asked Livingston if he wanted to buy all of Louisiana, not just New Orleans.

They offer $4 Million

• “Too Low”

• Talleyrand says go back and see me tomorrow.

• Livingston and Monroe had no authority to buy all of Louisiana

• Jefferson wanted control of the Mississippi.

• They pay $15 Million

• From this day the US take their place among the powers of the first rank

Constitutional?

• Jefferson hailed the news from France.

• Though he supported limited government he made a huge purchase for America without consulting Congress.

• Could the President buy land if it was not in the constitution?

• In 1803 US took control of Louisiana

Planning an Expedition

• Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis, his private secretary, to head the expedition. Lewis asked William Clark to go with him.

• They were to map a route to the Pacific ocean.

What they were to do

• As well as “climate as characterized by the thermometer, by the proportion of rainy, cloudy, and clear days, by lightning, hail, snow, ice… the dates at which particular plants put forth or lose their flower, or leaf, times of appearance of particular birds, reptiles or insects.”

• May 1804 Lewis and Clark started up the Missouri River from St. Louis.

• Marveled at the broad, grassy plains

• “As far as the eye can reach.”

• Buffalo, deer, elk, and antelope.

• For the first winter they stayed in N. Dakota with the Mandans.

Rockies

• Early spring.

• Bighorn sheep ran along the hills, prickly pear cactus jabbed the explorers’ moccasins.

• A grizzly bear chased Lewis while he was exploring alone.

• Meet some Shoshones –they gave Lewis some horses and directions.

Continental Divide

• A Mountain ridge that separates river systems flowing toward opposite sides of a continent

The Pacific

• November 7, 1805, Clark wrote in his journal, “Great joy in camp. We are in view of the ocean, this great Pacific Ocean which we have been so long anxious to see.”
