TimeWill need to allow for;• Class discussion• Thinking and planning • Research• Drafting• Production

A Writing ChallengeKey Stage 2

Cross Curricular Links toDesign Technology

ExtensionWhy not give time to allow children to presentand talk about their work?• Invite constructive comment from peers• Mount an exhibition of the work• Use the work as a basis for a class assembly on famous people

LessonPlan 2

Scenario• You are going to design a poster promoting involvement in the Golden Mile project

Product• A poster that should have as its main focus the health benefits of taking part in the Golden Mile Scheme• It should show how to get more information on taking part• It should be eye-catching and have a high impact

Time• The time allotted would be at the discretion of the Teacher

A Design ChallengeKey Stage 2

Cross Curricular Links toI.C.T.

Extension• Give time for children to present their posters for peer feedback and questions• Allow reflection time for self evaluation and product improvement or development

Organisation• Children could work individually, in pairs or in small groups

LessonPlan 3

Scenario• Using investigative skills we are going to study and record the effects of exercise on our heart rate

Introduction• Record the “at rest “ heart rate of all the children in the class• Ask the children to predict the potential increase caused by walking a mile• Can they identify the variables that might affect individual outcomes. i.e. pace of walking• Make a record of their predictions

Product• An individual record per child• Heart beat at rest• Heart beat at ¼. ½ and ¾ mile mark• Heart beat at 5 mins and 10 mins after the exercise

A Science ChallengeKey Stage 2

Cross Curricular Links toNumeracy and P.E.

Extension• This challenge will generate a great deal of interesting data• Investigate class aggregated data• Calculate average scores• Investigate Boys and Girl’s statistics• Are there gender differences in the class?• What can we do to lessen heart rate? i.e. training and getting fitter• Does walking more help our heart rate over a period of time• Does the time of day or what we have eaten make a difference?

LessonPlan 4

Scenario• Based on your experience of walking the Golden Mile you are going to design the ultimate pair of Walking Shoes

ProductThe points to consider;• Comfort• Weight• Hygiene• Cost of materials• Practical application• Attractiveness and possibly trendiness of the product

A Design Technology ChallengeKey Stage 2

Cross Curricular Links toSpeaking and Listening

Presentation• Allow time for children to present and respond to questions about their designs• Try a Dragon’s Den format• Ask peers to respond with positive and constructively negative points• Give opportunity for product development and modification

LessonPlan 5

Scenario• You are going to design A GOLDEN MILE BREAKFAST SPECIAL that could be eaten beforecompleting the mile course

Product• Your breakfast should meet a cost budget of no more than £ 2.50 per child• The meal should take account of different food types and how they convert to energy• The meal should be light and digestible. Walking or taking exercise on a full stomach is not healthy practice• The meal should be tasty, appetising, healthy and interesting

A Food Technology ChallengeKey Stage 2

Extension• Give opportunity for children to produce their meal• Conduct a Masterchef session with a panel of experts ie. Governors, Headteacher, and selected children as judges• Test the effectiveness of the winning meal

LessonPlan 7

Scenario• We are going to introduce a younger group of children to The Golden Mile Project.

Product• A planned event that might include • “ Buddying up “ with one of the younger children on their first walk• A series of activities to make the event special• Possible ideas might include making special stop stations on the course where children could do special activities:

Introducing OthersKey Stage 1

Extension• A whole group circle time on the event

Suggestions;• A Parachute Game stop. • A singing or music stop.• A dead lions rest stop.• A physical exercise stop.• A mini obstacle course stop. ( supervised )• A drinks stop.

LessonPlan 6

Scenario• We are going to make a class book called I WENT ON A LONG WALK

Product• A class book containing the individual pieces of written work• Pieces of work will reflect differentiation both in terms of teacher assistance and length of outcome according to each child’s skill levels

A Story BookKey Stage 1

Extension• Maybe add illustrations to enhance the appearance and appeal of the book• Present the finished book to the school library• Take the whole class together on the next Golden Mile walk and share the stories as you go round the course

Teacher Input• Teachers might like to read models of this genre to the class such as ‘We’re all going on a Bear hunt’

LessonPlan 9

Scenario• We are going to make a poster that tells people......... IT’S FUN TO DO THE GOLDEN MILE!

Teacher Input• Discuss.... What makes a good poster?• How do we co operate with others to achieve the best outcome?• What materials are available?• What is the time frame?

The Golden Mile PosterKey Stage 1

Product• An exhibition of the work• An invitation to Governors and parents to come and see the Golden mile posters• An invitation to join us on one of the walks.

Product• “The Golden Mile is Fun!” Poster

LessonPlan 8

Scenario• We are going to design a list of simple rules to follow when we do the Golden Mile.

Teacher InputMethodology here is very flexible butissues/questions to address might include:

• What is fair and unfair?• What is right and wrong?• What are rules?• What are their purpose?• How do rules affect our well-being and safety?• What is cheating?• Why do people cheat?• How does my behaviour affect others?• What does it feel like to be bullied or teased?

The above list is by no means exclusive but will be foundin the non- statutory guidelines for P.H.S.E AND CITIZENSHIP at KS1

LessonPlan 10

Scenario• We are going to learn some songs and chants that will help us to walk• This activity is based on the theory that singing while you walk aids motivation

Teacher Input• Introduce a range of songs and marching chants e.g. “This Old Man” etc.• Ask the children which ones they think would be good to walk to.

Music / Singing While We WalkKey Stage 1

Extension• Present the songs and chants in a school assembly based on being positive when facing a challenge

Product• Children will know a range of songs and chantsthat they can recite at various stages of their walk
