Copyright Notice Copyright © 2011 ESL Resources All rights reserved Important Copyright and Photocopy Permission Information There seems to be more demand for ESL services and less money for books! It’s not easy to be an ESL teacher without photocopying books. ESL Resources recognizes this and pro-vides ESL teachers with a relatively cheap source of legally reproducible books. For $40 - $50 purchasing teachers get an ESL book with permission to photocopy. The cost of the book is often less than 50 cents per reproducible page. Each book represents hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours of preparation time. Teachers, how much is your time worth? ESL Resources has the books - now keep us in business by purchasing our books.
Purchasing Teacher (One Teacher Permission) A purchasing teacher is granted permission to photocopy this book for use by his/her stu-dents. You can be an itinerant teacher at several sites or based at one site. Photocopies are not for resale.
Purchasing School (One School/Site Permission) If you need photocopy permission for your entire school it can be arranged for an additional fee. Please contact me at [email protected] for further information. Photocopies are not for resale.
FAQ Q: Can I make a copy for a teacher so she can photocopy from the photocopy for her stu-dents? A: Photocopying from a photocopy of this book is known as a pirate copy and is illegal. Is-n’t it better just to purchase the book with permission to photocopy for less than $50? Q: Can I borrow this book from a resource center or library then photocopy it? A: No, that would be copyright violation. You only get a photocopy license if you purchase the book or your school has purchased a site license. Introduction I love teaching lower levels. However, it does have its challenges. The challenge isn’t the students limited language or even presenting ideas. For me the challenge was and is having sufficient practices and varying them enough to meet the students need for repetition and still keeping them excited about learning. The idea of putting these books together started four years ago when I was asked to teach Level 1. I hadn’t taught this level for many years and remembered how hard it was to find materials. After a renewed look for materials and finding only a page here and there, I started creating, testing and recording my Level 1 ideas. Teaching lower levels is about building a foundation. It’s my hope that these drills, worksheets and activities make your life as a teacher a little easier and help you and your students have a good time while building the foundation for their ongoing learning. About the Author Many people know Dan Ingram through the Grab Bag Series. Dan has taught in South America and Korea as well as at college and university programs in Canada. For the past 19 years he has taught ESL for the Canadian Cooperative for Language and Cultural Stud-ies in Toronto. Acknowledgements A special thanks goes to my spouse Carl who provides me with the space and support to see these projects become a reality. To the many students that have practiced and shaped these activities, thank you.

Blend The Stories
Instructions: Photocopy one set of information story cards on the next page for each pair of students. Cut the paper in half. Put the students in groups of two. If space in your classroom permits, have the pairs move their chairs so that they are facing each other. This will help encourage the listening process. Give one person in each group the top part of the story. Instruct them to read the story aloud to their partner. The partner should listen but not read the paper. Encourage them to read the story more than once and have the listener report back to their partner what they understand. After an appropriate amount of time have the reader turn their paper over on the table. Pass out the bottom part of the story to the other student in each group. She/he reads their part of the story aloud. When finished, ask the class if the stories are the same or different. Instruct them to write the stories blending them to one. If you feel that the class will need help in understanding how to blend the stories, write the following sentences on the board to model the idea.
1) Steve is tall and handsome. He has beautiful eyes. 2) Steve is thin. He has blue eyes.
Steve is tall, thin and handsome. He has beautiful blue eyes.
Follow up #1: The students continue to work in pairs. Instruct them to write 8 to 10 questions about the story. After an appropriate amount of time the class will form new pairs and ask their questions to the new partner. Follow up #2: Read the blended story aloud to a new partner and answer the questions on page 8.

Instructions: Prepare one game board for each group of three or four students. Each group needs two dice. One die determines the top row number and the other die determines the column number. For example, if a student rolls a 3 and a 3 then they use ( He ) a blue bicycle / a red bicycle. The student looks at the information, decides what verb to use and then makes a Yes / No question with the first piece of information. Example: Does he have a blue bicycle? One of the other students in the group needs to answer first in the negative and then in the positive. Example: No, he doesn’t have a blue bicycle. He has a red bicycle. Before passing out the game boards and dice, put the following chart on the board and use the ideas to model the structures to be practiced.
