The idea of using equivalency to help solve a problem is a critical skill in mathematics. During Hay, country girl Kate must determine her monthly hay expense for her horse and two ponies. The data provided are the amount of hay eaten by the horse and ponies, how often they are fed, and the cost of a hay bale.
LESSON: HAYHow much does Kate spend on hay each month?
Hay
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example: 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

Gladys: Skills learned from 4.NF.B.3b, including adding fractions with like denominators, will be expanded upon in this standard.
Kevin: Discuss with students that multiplying original denominators will find a common denominator, but it might not be the smallest common denominator. Further simplification may be necessary.
Megan: Visual tools, like fraction models, can help students evaluate whether a common denominator found using an algorithm is reasonable.

HAYHow much hay did Kate’s horses eat this week?
Country girl Kate uses a weekly food log to keep a close eye on the amount of hay her horses actually eat. If healthy, each of her adult horses (Thunder, Knight, Will & Big Boy) will eat between 4 ½ and 5 bales of hay each week. If a horse eats any less than that, Kate checks in on them to see if they might be sick.
How much did each horse eat?
Which horse(s) should Kate check for sickness?
5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or diff erence of fractions with like denominators. For example: 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd).

APPLYING THE STANDARD
To add or subtract fractions, it is sometimes necessary to replace the given fractions with equivalent fractions that have a common denominator.
