A Note on Numbers

We have talked about 17th vs. 70th

What about 76th? (seventy-sixth?) Where is the stress?

Seventy-sixth (you still stress the same syllable in seventy, however, you stress the second number more)

SO:

17th = sevenTEENTH

70th = SEVentienth

76th = SEVenty-SIXTH

Remember: Sentence stress in English is like using your voice as a highlighter.

1. We highlight KEY WORDS (“CONTENT” WORDS)

“THIS is the HOUSE that JACK BUILT” (p. 87)

RHYTHYM: The “beats” fall on the important words.

But what about reduction?

Remember the schwa? /ə/ (reduction of syllables in a word)

Co-mmu-ni-CA-tion /kə.ˌmyuː .nə.ˈkey. ʃən/

Bi-o-LO-gi-cal /ˌbay. ə.ˈlɑː. ʤɪ. kəl/

Ma-JO-ri-ty /mə.ˈʤo. rə. ti/

Ab-sen-TEE /ˌæb. sən. ˈtiː/

Reduction

We also reduce whole words in sentences!

“I’m going to go to the movies”

I’m gonna go to the movies.

STRESS = LOUDER, LONGER, HIGHER

REDUCTION = SOFTER, SHORTER, LOWER
