Lesson 7Population and Economic
Activities
Learning Objectives:
• Review types of graph• Statistics –how reliable are they?• Discuss relationship betweenPopulation & economic activities• Summarise main points of the lesson• Signpost for next lesson
What would the best graph be to show the following
The split between primary, secondary and tertiary employment in USA, Brazil and Nepal.
What would the best graph be to show the following
Change of consumption of energy over time from 2000 to 2050
What would the best graph be to show the following
To compare the tourism data for the UK in October 2001 with October the previous year.
What would the best graph be to show the following
To show the size of different age groups of indigenous and non indigenous population in Australia
Statistical bias• Accurate and reliable statistics are often ______ to obtain.• It is difficult to know the ____ or authority of statistics found on the web.• You need to bear in mind the _____ of last census or survey for a particular country.• Different ____ techniques are used by different research agencies• ____ statistics – not all people complete the forms or do so accurately• Different methods of _____ and recording information many be used.• There are different ____ of key terms. E.g. what is the definition of
“London” for measures of population?• Extrapolation and margins of error – total figures for a country or
region are ____ on a sample of respondents.
Consider this….
It was possible to find 4 figures for the population of Cairo in 1986
• 8.1 million• 9.8 million• 12 million• 15 millionTask: what could have accounted for
these differences?
Task: find the links!
Can you make any connections between the following to explain how economic activities influence population?
Country MEDC/LEDC
(GNP in US$)
Primary Secondary Tertiary
Bangladesh LEDC 63 11 26Nepal LEDC 81 3 16Cameroon LEDC 79 13 17France MEDC 4 24 72India LEDC 60 17 23Italy MEDC 5 32 63Japan MEDC 5 25 70UK MEDC 1 25 74USA MEDC 2 23 75
Comparing employment structures to levels of economic development
Don’t these pie charts show the information more clearly!
The split between primary, secondary and tertiary employment in USA, Brazil and
Nepal.
Links between economic development and population
• The higher the level of economy…• The greater the income levels• The more money can be raised from tax• So more can be spent on society• Which leads to better education and
health care• Which affects the BR, DR and LE….
What about economic activities?
• Type of economic activity?• Agriculture – how will this affect BR?• Industry & Manufacturing – what kind of population does this require?• Services _ what might this indicate about
development?• GDP (per head) – explain the link between
this and FR
LEDC: Bangladesh
• Population: 149.7 million• Population density: 1040 people/km2
• Population growth: 1,91%• BR: 28.9%• Agriculture: 66%• Industry: 10%• Services: 24%• GDP per head: $380
BRIC: Brazil
• Population: 191.2 million• Population density: 22 people/km2• Population growth: 1.05%• Agriculture: 23%• Industry: 24%• Services: 53%• GDP per head: $8144
MEDC: Japan
• Population: 127.8 million• Population density: 338.4
people/km2• Population growth: 0.17%• Agriculture: 5%• Industry: 29%• Services: 66%• GDP per head: $36170
So, do economic activities influence population?
• More developed countries seem to have a lower BR
• Greater wealth leads to an individualistic culture
• Large families can become an economic burden: the cost of education
• Children not needed as labour, care givers and providers, smaller families
• Career over family?
Topics to consider:
PPEST• Physical• Political• Environmental• Social• Technological
Research approach
• Atlas or map• Course book• Internet: VLE for a start• Other books in LRC• Magazines• Each other
