Lesson 5 - Multiple Data Providers

Goal: This lesson describes the reviews the concept of DocumentCentricity in BusinessObjects using Report Manager.

Document centricity is the ability to bring data from differentsources and display it in the same report.

In this lesson, we will use the BusinessObjects Report Manager tobuild our data providers. Report Manager allows us to build ourdata providers without having to display the data in the report.

This lesson will cover the following topics:

Single Universe Multiple Universes Different Source(s) (Other than Universes)

Single Universe

The majority of BusinessObjects documents you create are built from a singleuniverse.

To illustrate creating a new data provider from a single universe do the following:

1. Right-mouse button click on Report Manager and select New Data Provider.

2. Click on Begin and the following screen will appear.

3. Click on Next to select Universe.

4. The following screen will appear, prompting you to select the Universe youwish to access.

5. The Query Panel screen will appear, Select your objects and Click on Run.

6. To create another data provider from the same Universe, Repeat Steps 1-5.

Multiple Universe(s)

Often times, the data you need to display in your BusinessObjects documentcome from multiple universes. For example, Human Resources information willbe stored in a Human Resources universe and Accounting information will bestored in an Accounting universe.

To illustrate creating multiple data providers from different Universes do thefollowing:

1. Continue working with the existing BusinessObjects document. Right-mousebutton click on Report Manager and select New Data Provider.

2. To access data from another universe, select on Access new data in adifferent way. Click on Begin.

3. Click on Next to select Universe.

4. The following screen will appear, prompting you to select the Universe youwish to access.

5. The Query Panel screen will appear, Select your objects and Click on Run.

7. To display the data, simply click on the objects for each query and drag anddrop into the working area.

Different Sourc e(s) (Other than Un iverses)

There are also situations when the data you need to display in yourBusinessObjects document comes from a different source other than a universe.For example, you may want to display information you have on spreadsheet.

Again, through the concept of document centricity in BusinessObjects, the toolallows you to incorporate data from spreadsheets and/or text files side by sidewith any information you retrieve from a single and/or multiple universes.

To illustrate creating a data provider from a different source do the following:

1. Continue working with the existing BusinessObjects document. We willaccess data from a spreadsheet. Right-mouse button click on ReportManager and select New Data Provider.

2. To access data from the spreadsheet, select on Access new data in adifferent way. Click on Begin.

3. Click on Others to bring in the data from the spreadsheet.

4. The Access Personal Data panel will appear as shown below.

5. Click on the Browse button and select the Multiple Data Providers.xls file.

6. The screen will appear as follows.

7. Click on First row contains column names.

8. Click on Run.

End of Lesson 5 Exercise

This exercise will review some of the topics covered in the lesson .

Create a new BusinessObjects document.

Create two new data providers from the Course/FTE Training Universe.

Create a new data provider from the Multiple Data Providers spreadsheet.

Display the information in the same report.

Save your BusinessObjects document and name it, lesson_5.rep
