LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY 2

STEP 1 | Come Together (10 min)

Supplies: Bowl or container big enough for foot washing (fill it with warm water), two towels, soap, container filled with dirt

FOOT WASHING• GATHER the children.• ASK, Who wants to be my very special volunteer today? This person

has to be willing to let me touch their feet without giggling and losing control. Who can do that?

• CHOOSE a volunteer. Instruct the child to take off their shoes.• SAY, When Jesus lived on this earth over two thousand years ago,

people walked everywhere. They walked everywhere on dirt roads, and they wore sandals! So imagine how dirty their feet were!

• PUT dirt on your child volunteer’s feet and rub it around.• CONTINUE, When people would go to someone’s house for dinner,

the owner of the house would often give the guests water so they could wash their dirty feet before sitting down to eat at the table. Or having their feet washed by someone made the guests feel honored and special.

• ASK your child volunteer, “May I wash your feet before dinner?”• WASH and dry the volunteer’s feet.

SERVANTS• EXPLAIN, Did you know that only servants washed people’s feet?

Servants were the lowliest of the low. Servants were there to help other people. Servants had no power or importance. Servants took orders from so-called important people like kings and queens.

• ASK, Guess what Jesus did just before he went to the cross to die for our sins and to be our Savior? He gathered his friends into one room, and he washed their feet! Jesus, the King of the universe, the God who created you and me, got down on his hands and knees and washed people’s dirty, smelly, tickly feet!

• SAY, Jesus was a servant. Can you say that with me? (Repeat “ Jesus was a servant” several times)

• SAY, Jesus wants you to be a servant too. Servants are humble. Can you say that word with me? (Repeat “humble” several times)

• ASK, What do you think it means to be humble? (Take responses)• EXPLAIN, Humble people are servants, like Jesus. Humble people put

God and other people first.

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY 3

KEY VERSE• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse. You may want to repeat the verse

slowly a few times until the children are able to say it from memory.• NOTE: You may also choose to review last week’s Key Verse together.

Philippians 2:3Value others (point away from self with both hands)more than yourselves. (thumb to chest, pointing to self)

STEP 2 | Hear the Story (15 min)

Supplies: Believe Storybook Bible, PowerPoint slides or printable posters of illustrations, empty can, sheet of construction paper

Teacher Prep: Wrap construction paper around the can. In large letters on the side of the can, write “King” across the top of the paper. Flip the can over and write “Servant” across the top of that side.

INTRODUCTION• TELL the children that they will hear two stories about people with

great power who became humble.• SHOW the children the can.• SAY, Our first story is about King Nebuchadnezzar, so I’ll set up the

can to show “King.” When the story changes, let me know, and I’ll flip the can over to show “Servant.”

READ CHAPTER 30• READ aloud chapter 30, “Humility,” from the Believe Storybook Bible.• SHOW the illustrations included with this curriculum on PowerPoint

slides or printable posters.• FLIP the can when

• Nebuchadnezzar’s dream comes true and he loses his power (Servant)

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY 4

• Nebuchadnezzar regains power (King)• Jesus — beginning of story (King)• Jesus washes disciples’ feet (Servant)• Jesus is risen and seated at the right hand of God — end of story

(King)

REVIEW HUMILITY• ASK, What is humility? How can we show it? (Humility is valuing oth-

ers more than ourselves; we show it by not bragging, by not thinking we are better than others, and by serving others)

REVIEW KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR• ASK, What kind of king was Nebuchadnezzar? (He was proud; he was

king over the largest country in the world; he was evil)• ASK, What did Daniel say about King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream? (He

said King Nebuchadnezzar would lose his power; for seven years he would act and eat like an animal; then he would regain his power)

• ASK, How did King Nebuchadnezzar change? (He said there is only one true God; he praised God; he became a better king)

REVIEW JESUS• ASK, How did Peter respond to Jesus’ humility? (He was confused; he

said no; he said, “Wash all of me”)• ASK, What does this story show us about Jesus? (He is humble; he puts

others before himself; he is a servant)• PRAY, Dear God, please help us to be humble like Jesus. Help us to put

you and other people first. Show us how to love and to serve people. Amen.

STEP 3 | Explore MoreChoose from these activity options, depending on your available time frame, to help the children explore the lesson further.

Option 1: Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet (20 min)

Supplies: Footprint template (one per child), paper bowls (not wax-coated, 20 oz. works best), scissors, glue, crayons or markers, whiteboard or flip-chart with easel, dry-erase or regular marker

Teacher Prep: Write the Key Verse on a whiteboard or flipchart for the chil-dren to copy. Print and photocopy the Footprint template (one per child).

Page 5: LESSON 30 | Humilitystorage.cloversites.com/pinedalechristianchurch/documents/30 Elem… · OPTION 2: Blindfolds (one per pair of children), hair elastics (one per pair of children),

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY 5

• GIVE each child a paper bowl and tell them to color the inside of the bowl blue to represent water.

• GIVE each child a copy of the Footprint template and distribute scissors.

• TELL the children to cut out their footprints and write on them the words of their Key Verse:

Philippians 2:3: “Think of others as better than yourselves.”

• INSTRUCT the children to glue the footprint inside the bowl.• SAY, This craft is a reminder of the way Jesus washes our feet, how his

death was a way of serving us, and how his Holy Spirit serves us by being with us.

Option 2: Humble Puzzles (15 min)

Supplies: Blindfolds (one per pair of children), hair elastics (one per pair of children), simple wooden puzzles

• SHOW the children a simple wooden puzzle.• SAY, How many of you think you could complete this puzzle easily?

This looks like an easy puzzle that might be challenging only for a young baby or toddler, right?

• ASK for a volunteer who is willing to have the leader place a hair elastic around their hands behind their back. Be sure the elastic is loose enough so that it does not cut off circulation. If the elastic is too tight on a child, that child may simply hold their hands behind their back.

• GIVE the volunteer a simple wooden puzzle to complete. The children will quickly realize that the volunteer cannot complete the puzzle.

• ASK, Do you feel a little silly or embarrassed because you can’t com-plete this puzzle that a little toddler could do? Do you think you need to ask for help to complete this puzzle? Pretty humbling, isn’t it?

• ASK for another volunteer who is willing to wear a blindfold.• GIVE that volunteer a chance to attempt the puzzle. Although they

might be able to assemble a few pieces, it will be difficult.• SAY, Everyone has limitations. We have different strengths and weak-

nesses. When we work together, we can overcome our own weaknesses and limitations. However, having limitations means that we must prac-tice humility. We have to be humble and ask for help and recognize that we can honor others for their gifts, even gifts that are above our own abilities.

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY 6

• ASSIGN each child a partner. One partner will wear the blindfold and the other will place a hair elastic around their hands behind their back or simply hold their hands behind their back. Help children place the elastics on their wrists and place blindfolds, if necessary.

• GIVE each pair a wooden puzzle to complete together, with one partner directing and the other partner assembling.

• SWITCH roles and allow them to assemble the puzzle again. (As an option, you could also do this as a small group rather than with part-ners. Have one child put the puzzle together blindfolded and ask the rest of the group to give directions.)

Option 3: Pride and Humility (15 min)

Supplies: Pride and Humility sheet (one per child), crayons or markers

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Pride and Humility sheet (one per child). Write “Putting Myself First” and “Putting Others First” where the children can see and copy them.

• EXPLAIN that there are many opportunities to show humility by put-ting others first.

• SAY, When I get on the school bus, I could race to the front and snatch the best seat. That would be putting myself first. When I put others first, I wait my turn to board the bus. I say, “Excuse me,” if I bump someone. I even look around to see if others need a good seat and I let them have mine.

• ALLOW the children to choose from situations like the ones below:• Waiting in the lunch line at school• Playing on a playground• Taking a long car ride• Going to a movie• Choosing a partner for a game

• GIVE each child a Pride and Humility sheet.• INSTRUCT the children to choose a situation and write it on their

paper. They can then use the two columns of the paper to write about and illustrate the different responses.

• ALLOW time for the children to write about and illustrate each sce-nario. Remind them to include words, actions, and feelings in their descriptions. When they are finished, encourage the children to discuss their situations and responses with a partner.

Option 4: Let’s Color! (10 min)

Supplies: Crayons or markers, Let’s Color! sheet (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Let’s Color! sheet (one per child).

• GIVE each child a Let’s Color! sheet.• PROVIDE a selection of crayons and/or markers for the children to

share.• DISCUSS this week’s Key Idea as the children color.

Showing Humility

Use two puppets to act out the following short skit. You will need a prop to represent a cookie on a plate.

Teacher: Sam, I see that you have a delicious cookie on your plate.

Sam: Yes, it’s mine, and I can’t wait to eat it!

Teacher: But, Sam, you’ve already had two cookies, and your friend Chloe hasn’t had any. Remember, God wants us to put others first. Maybe you can practice being humble and offer to share your cookie?

Sam: (sadly) Oh, fine! Hey, Chloe, here’s a cookie!

Chloe: Ooh, yummy! I saw you eating those and they sure looked good. I was hoping you’d offer one to me!

Sam: (sadly) Yeah, I kind of have to. I really wanted it, but I’m supposed to think of others or something. Go ahead. Take my last cookie. See if I care.

Chloe: Uh, never mind. I don’t really want it.

Teacher: Now, Sam, that wasn’t a very good attitude. You offered Chloe your cookie with your words, but your attitude showed that you didn’t really want her to have it. That’s not being humble. God doesn’t want us to pretend or to be fake. Why don’t you try again?

Sam: (angrily) Ugh, okay! Chloe, eat the cookie!

Chloe: N-no, thanks.

Sam: (angrily) I said eat it! I have to give it to you, so go ahead and eat it! Can’t you see I’m trying to be humble here! Grrr . . . eat the cookie!

Chloe: Yikes! I have to go.

Teacher: Oh, Sam, that wasn’t the best attitude either! You acted so angry and bossy that Chloe didn’t want the cookie. And she didn’t even want to hang around.

Sam: (whining) But I was trying to be humble and share my cookie! I told Chloe to have it!

Teacher: You know what’s going on here? We can’t be humble without God’s help. He’s the One who helps us to be humble. It’s God’s Holy Spirit who gives us the power to put other people first and to be happy about it. Maybe we could pray and talk to God and ask him for some help?

Sam: Okay.

TEACHER takes SAM’S hand to pray

Teacher: Dear God, change our hearts. Help us to love other people more than we love ourselves. Help us to see how much you love people. Give us more love, more love, more love, dear God! Amen.

Sam: Amen. Well, what do I do now? Chloe’s probably mad at me or scared of me. I feel bad. I was kind of a selfish jerk, huh?

Teacher: It’s okay, Sam. We’re all selfish at times. That’s why we need to keep saying we’re sorry and asking people to forgive us. Why don’t you take the cookie to her and apologize.

Sam: I will! I’ll apologize. Hey, Chloe!

Chloe: Uh, yes?

Sam: I’m sorry for acting so crazy about having this last cookie. (holding out the cookie) Here. I want you to have this.

Chloe: Really?

Sam: Really.

Chloe: Thanks so much! You want to split it?

SAM and CHLOE eat the cookie together.

STEP 4 | Going Home (5 min)

Supplies: Family Page (one per child)

Teacher Prep: Print and photocopy the Family Page (one per child).

• GIVE each child a copy of this week’s Family Page.• SAY, Give this page to your family when they pick you up. It will

remind you to tell your family what you learned today about Jesus’ example of humility.

• HAVE the children practice telling you about how we can be humble.• REVIEW this week’s Key Verse as well as today’s story and Key Idea

from the Believe Storybook Bible as you wait for the children to get picked up.

• MAKE sure each child remembers to take home any activity sheets or craft projects and the Family Page.

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY

FAMILY PAGE | Lesson 30: Humility

Bible Basis: Daniel 4:1 – 37; John 13:1 – 17

Key Verse: Philippians 2:3: “Value others more than yourselves.”

Key Question: What does it mean to value others before myself?

Key Idea: I choose to value others more than myself.

Resource: Believe Storybook Bible , Chapter 30, “Humility”

How to Use This PageThis week, your family can either read the story from the Believe Storybook Bible or read the Bible Basis passages from your Bible to help your child remember the lesson. Use the Table Talk questions below to start a discussion around the dinner table, while driving in the car, or just about anywhere. The Living Faith activity is designed to remind your child of the Bible lesson through a drama or other engaging activity. The Extra Mile idea provides interactive ways for your child to connect with the story.

Table Talk 1. What does it mean to be humble? How can you show humility? 2. Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. What are some ways you can serve

others? 3. Talk about a time when you or someone acted with too much pride. 4. Why do you think pride is dangerous? 5. When is it hard for you to put others before yourself?

Living Faith

Option 1Have your child re-create King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream by creating a shoe-box diorama. Use a real stick to represent the tree, broken in two with the stump in the ground. Add plastic or paper cutout birds and animals. Choose a verse from the story to write on a banner on top of the shoe box.

LESSON 30: Humility | EARLY ELEMENTARY

Option 2Help your child write a pattern sentence. Use this simple structure to illustrate the difference between pride and humility:

When , instead of , I will .Have your child fill in the blanks with a real-life example, such as “When

my baseball team wins a game, instead of shouting rude comments at the los-ing team, I will go shake hands with them.” Repeat this structure a few times for a practical poem about pride and humility.

Extra Mile• Jesus tied a towel around his waist to show that he was ready to serve.

Make or buy a child-sized apron for your child and encourage them to serve others. You might be amazed how this simple change in uniform gives them the mind-set of a servant. You can even set a timer and say, “For ten minutes, wear the apron and see how much you can serve others.”

• Discuss with your child the difference between showing humility (a choice) and being humiliated (an accident or caused by someone with bad intentions). Explain that although humiliation has a negative conno-tation, choosing to show humility is very positive.

• One way to exercise humility is by giving God credit for our victories. Practice this with your child by imagining different scenarios that your child might experience (winning a spelling bee, helping friends settle a dispute, etc.). Compliment your child on their wonderful performance and have your child practice responding by crediting God rather than self.
