OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY
PLATEAUS:
A high land with steep sides and a flat top is called a plateau. The southern part of
India is a plateau. The southern plateau is called the Deccan Plateau. It covers the
largest area of our country. The region is surrounded by hill ranges on three sides. It
has an uneven surface. The land is hard and rocky. It is less fertile than the plains.
DESERTS:
A large area of land covered with sand is called a desert. In the north – western part of
India lies the Indian Desert, also called the Thar Desert. It covers a large part of
Rajasthan. This area is hot and dry. It gets very little rainfall. Very few plants and
trees grow here.
ISLANDS:
A piece of land surrounded by water on all sides is called an island. There are
two groups of islands in our country:
The Andaman and Nicobar islands lie on the eastern side, in the Bay of
Bengal.
The Lakshadweep Islands lie on the western side, in the Arabian Sea.

SWITCHING ON A COMPUTER
To start a computer, follow the following steps:
Switch on the Main Power Supply Button.
Switch on the UPS button. If the electricity
goes off, the UPS makes the computer work.
Switch on the power supply button of the
CPU.
Switch on the monitor button. You will see
the WELCOME SCREEN of Windows.
DESKTOP AND ITS COMPONENTS
When we switch on a computer, Windows start automatically. The first screen that
appears with labelled pictures on it, is called Desktop. The various components of
Desktop are:
THE START BUTTON:
To start the Start menu, bring the mouse pointer on the Start button and click on
it. The Start menu gives you quick access to documents, Windows applications,
Windows Help and Support menu.
ICONS:
The small labelled pictures or symbols present on the Desktop are called
Icons. These icons are used to open specific programs or documents.
TASKBAR:
Taskbar is a long horizontal bar at the bottom of the Desktop.
On the extreme left side, it has the Start button.
The middle section of the bar shows buttons with a label for each open
application and allows us to open any of the applications. We can add or remove
items from the taskbar.
The right side of the taskbar is known as Notification Area, which includes a
clock and a group of icons that provide the status and notifications about the
network connectivity, incoming mails etc.
The Show desktop button is present on the extreme right of the taskbar. Click
on the button to minimize all the open windows and view the Desktop.
