POSSESIVE ADJECTIVES

We use possessive adjectives to show who owns or "possesses" something.

The possessive adjectives are:

Here is a chart of the possessive adjectives:

English TIP

Compare:

your = possessive adjectiveyou're = you are

its = possessive adjectiveit's = it is

Be careful! There is no apostrophe (') in the possessive adjective "its". We use an apostrophe to write the short form of "it is". For example:

it is raining = it's raining.

I'm taking my dog to the vet. It's broken its leg. = It is broken its leg.

ASKING FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION

Personal information questions are the basis for any conversation in English and so are important for when you meet somebody for the first time. They are the building blocks from which the rest of the conversation can develop.

The most common question words in English are the following:

WHO is only used when referring to people. (= I want to know the person)

Who is the best football player in the world?

Who is your best friend?

WHAT is used to refer to specific information. (= I want to know the thing)

What is your name?

What is her favourite colour?

What is the time?

WHERE is used when referring to a place or location. (= I want to know the place)

Where is the library?

Where are my shoes?

WHEN is used to refer to a time or an occasion. (= I want to know the time)

When is his birthday?

When are we going to finish?

WHY is used to obtain an explanation or a reason. (= I want to know the reason)

Why are they always late?

Why are you sad?

Normally the response begins with "Because..."
