Every person is gifted with freedom. The right to

the exercise of freedom is an essential requirement

of the dignity of a human person (CCC 1738).

Therefore, unlike animals that act out of instinct,

we as human beings have the capacity to choose

what we want to do. However, as Catholics we alsoknow that there are important things that we should

consider when we are exercising our freedom

Arthur three years ago. It spread so easilyin the internet that eventually Mcjolly

had to close because all of those who saw

this post became afraid to eat in their

Mcjolly filed a case of cybercrime against

Arthur. Arthur denied that he was guilty

because he believed that he only made use ofhis Freedom Of Speech. He said that

everyone is free to say their ideas as long as

it is the truth.

FREEDOM IS...

We cannot always say what we

want to say or even, do anything

that we want to do. The exercise offreedom does not imply a right to

say or do everything

(CCC 1740).

FREEDOM IS...

Freedom should always be

exercised within a given context.

An action could not be a proper useof freedom if it violates or harms

these conditions and the rights of

others.

FREEDOM IS...

Freedom is exercised in relationships

between human beings (CCC 1738).

Therefore, every time we exercise our

freedom we are not only affecting

ourselves but we are also directly or

indirectly affecting others.

Flinn was a bully in their school. He was so

bully that he would always ask money fromhis classmates. One day, he was caught by his

teacher punching another student. Then

when he was asked why he did that, he said,

ok so I did something bad but what can I do?I was born this way. I am free to do bad things

because I am just a human being. I am weak

Human freedom opens us to thepossibility of choosing between good

and evil, and thus of growing in

holiness or failing and sinning (CCC

1732).

The good should always be the focusof ones freedom. God created us to be

good and for the good. To commit sin is

a misuse of Gods gift of freedom

because it takes us away from the real

purpose of our life.

CASE STUDY 2Bottle of freedom

Mr. Scott has a bad habit of drinking alcohol.

He could drink up to 25 bottles of beer a day. His

family worried a lot about his health because he

could have liver cancer if he continues his

addiction with alcohol. However, he would not

listen. He simply told them that a bottle of beer

makes him feel so free and besides we are all

free to do what we want as long as it makes us

happy.

God created man a rational being,

conferring on him the dignity of aperson who can initiate and control

his own actions (CCC 1730). We can

only become the master of ouractions if we can freely choose what

is good and just.

The more one does what is good, thefreer one becomes. There is no truefreedom except in the service of what

is good and just. The choice to disobey

and do evil is an abuse of freedomand leads to the slavery to sin (CCC

1733).

Another situation: Johnny Theft

Johnny was so hungry that afternoon in

school. He forgot his lunchbox at home

and he did not have any money to buyfood. Suddenly, he saw a wallet lying on

the floor. He took the wallet and thought

to himself, Boy, am I so lucky or what?Now I can buy some lunch. Something

made him think twice: Oh wait but this is

not mine? Nah finders keepers

He finally decided to buy some lunch

with the money that he got from the

wallet. After eating he heard hisclassmate, Arthur, crying. He

approached Arthur and asked, Why are

you crying? Arthur answered: I lost mywallet. My mom will get angry with me

because my allowance for the whole

month is in that wallet.

Johnny walked away and finally

went home sad after his classes. He

could not eat dinner or sleep that

night something was bothering him.

What have I done? I cannot tell

Arthur that I was the one who took

his wallet. What will happen to

Arthur now? What should I do?

We said that every person is gifted with

freedom so that man can choose what isgood. In the same way, there is aconscience in every human heart that calls

man to love and to do what is good andto avoid evil (CCC 1776) in the rightmoment.

We cannot see our conscience but westrongly feel it inside us. Therefore:

a. What symbol can you use todescribe what a conscience is?b. When do you need to use your

What is Conscience?

Conscience is present in mans heart as a voice that helpshim to make proper judgment at the appropriate time (cf.

CCC 1776-1777). It helps him identify whether a specificaction is good or bad.

Our conscience also helps us in the responsible exercise of

freedom. It guides freedom so that it will know the good thatmust be done and the evil that should be avoided. It alsoopens us to the possibility of making up for the wrong thingsthat we have done.
