LESSON 1-Long vowels ae ee ie oe ueThe ALC teaching model begins with learning symbols for the long sounds of the vowels as spelling of long vowels comprises 23% of identified illogical English Language spellings.
In the ALC teaching alphabet, each long vowel is followed the (silent) letter e.
ae, ee, ie, oe, ue
(In lesson five short vowel sounds are introduced. They have their own sound and are recognized because they stand alone in a word or syllable, unless controlled by r.)
BEGIN!
Print ae, ee, ie, oe, ue in large letter or type in landscape form with at least 48 size font. (Letters can be printed on scrap fiber core strips obtained from a custom frame shop. Fiber core is available at most department stores but is not easy to cut.)
If you have questions or problems concerning these materials, you may contact Roberta Mahoney at . Leave your telephone number and she will return your call. )
Say: The are five vowel letters in the ALC alphabet: a, e, i, o, u.
There are five groups of vowels in the ALC teaching alphabet.
-long vowels-short vowels-governed by r sounds-diphthongs (vowel pairs)-schwa
Each vowel belongs to more than one group and has different sounds in each group.
Long vowels-ae, ee, ie, oe, ueThe first vowel group of sounds we will learn are the long vowel sounds. Show the following strip either on the computer or see picture. You will recognize the long vowel group because in print or writing, each long vowel is followed by a silent e.

Skill Reinforcement using sign language symbols.
This is a most effective way to reinforce recall of symbol/sounds.Tactile reinforcement using sign language symbols is a concrete means to facilitate students in mastering the 42 sound symbols presented in the introductory lessons. Simple to learn, easy to review, signs help students mentally picture the symbols/sounds. Also, if a student cannot recall a symbol sound, one can assist by signing the troublesome sound symbol without saying the sound. The two step process for recall provides the student with increased skill and a more positive self image in arriving at the sound,.
