Lesson 1 –

Year level 3 and 4

Standards to be addressed: AusVELS

Exploring and responding –

At Level 4, students comment on the exploration, development and presentation of their arts works, including the use of specific arts elements, principles and/or conventions, skills, techniques and processes. They identify and describe key features of arts works from their own and other cultures, and use arts language to describe and discuss the communication of ideas, feelings and purpose in their own and other people’s arts works.

Resources required:

• ‘Hidden Forest’ by Jeannie Baker • ‘Where the Forest Meets the Sea’ by Jeannie Baker • ‘Mirror’ by Jeannie Baker • ‘Window’ by Jeannie Baker • ‘Home’ by Jeannie Baker • ‘Belonging’ by Jeannie Baker • Interactive whiteboard • Pens/pencils • Worksheet 1 (attached)

Learning Opportunties:

Lesson introduction (Whole class focus)

• Ask children to assemble in front of interactive whiteboard • Begin the lesson by having a brief discussion with the students about what

we have previously been focusing on in art. (Elements and principles, colour and texture)

• Explain to children that we will be focusing on the artist Jeannie Baker and her artwork. (Inform children that we have read some of her books before and briefly explain what she does)

• Ask the class if any students have heard of Jeannie Baker and remember her artwork?

• Show children a range of Jeannie’s picture that will shown on the interactive whiteboard (pictures at bottom of document)

• Ask a range of children to interpret the pictures. Using scaffolding questions to prompt thinking:

• What do they see? What do they think is going on? Have they ever seen a place like this before (depending on what book)? What colours do they see in the pictures? Texture? Does the environment look healthy and natural? How do they think these illustrations are created? What materials are being used? Is it a photograph, painting or drawing?

• Spend time on each picture and really focus on these questions • Once children have had sufficient time to discuss these images show them

Jeannie Bakers book ‘Window’. • As this book has no words, allow time to discuss what children see in each

picture. Can they identify how Jeannie creates her images? What is changing? What is she trying to show?

• Explain to children that Jeannie Baker is showing change through her images without using words (children may already notice this)

• Ask students does this relate to our life today? Yes, our environment has dramatically changed and continues to as less natural environment is found worldwide (relating this to children’s own life experiences is engaging)

• Explain to children the activity – first show them the range of Jeannie Bakers book that will be available in the classroom.

Main component of the lesson: • After looking back on what we have discussed in the first half of the lesson

teacher will then explain that in groups we will be looking further into Jeannie Bakers books to create our own artwork.

• Children form small groups as soon as this discussion is over. • Photos from the start of the lesson will also be on display for children to

refer back to • Explain that each group will be given a book and they are to become

experts on the books they are given so they can then share with other groups what they have found out about Jeannie Bakers books.

• To scaffold the children with this activity, the teacher will provide them with a sheet of questions to guide their thinking (there will be some children in the class that will need to extra assistance) (worksheet 1 attachted)

• All children have the opportunity to input ideas • After children have completed this and had time to look at a book they will

then share with another person what they have found. • Teacher will walk about to ensure students are on task and this allows the

teacher to hear what students have noticed about her artwork. • When children finish this section of the lesson, they all return to the floor

for a final discussion and see what students would like to share. • Teacher asks if any of the students would like to explain how they think

Jeannie Baker has created her artwork. This will lead to the discussion on collage and what it is so we can begin our own collage.

• Finalize lesson by explaing to the class they have now explored some of Jeannie Baker’s artwork and next lesson we are creating our own.

How students will be assessed in relation to intended objectives:

• Can actively discuss the artwork created by Jeannie Baker • Discussion and interpretation of artwork by Jeannie Baker by participating

in discussion and answering questions • Identify colours and materials that are used in the artwork • Successfully work as a group to discuss ideas presented in the books
