• Students should be reading everyday.• To retell a story with a clear beginning,
middle, and end.• To make connections: text to self and text
to text.• To understand story elements such as
character, setting, plot, etc.• To read with fluency and expression.• To read and appreciate a variety of genres.
• Be sure to chat with your child about what was read!
• Go beyond key details and literal information.
• Question stems can help deepen conversations.
• Use “large” words when chatting and then work on the meaning of those words!

We use rubrics to determine our
grades for student’s work in guided reading.
Grades will be reflective of the
reading abilities of your child.
The writer will…• Use knowledge of letters and sounds to write words.
• Write complete sentences, beginning with a capital letter and appropriate ending punctuation.
• Write stories with a beginning, middle, and end.
• Use writing as a tool to communicate ideas.
• Students will be expected to write on a variety of topics.
There will not be weekly spelling tests. Students will be responsible for learning
how to use spelling patterns to make words. Our weekly word study homework will directly reflect these patterns that your child will need to practice/focus on
for assessments.
Remember, math can be applied in various settings.
• It would be beneficial to point out and discuss the mathematics involved in our day to day tasks at home (cooking, shopping, etc).
• We want to highlight the important role math plays in our lives to help communicate the purpose of investing our time in learning it.
• Counting and comparing are two great practices that can be easily done anywhere that will help numeracy development.
Math questioning…• Encourage your children to share
their thinking when working on math at home.
• Pick a question stem, or two, to discuss.
• When students can verbalize their reasoning, we know what they are thinking and can help guide them to new learning.
• Students will be assessed throughout the 9 weeks grading period.
• Tests are not timed.• You can utilize flashcards
and computer games to help your child with this skill at home.
We will be using and assessing students on fast facts throughout the year.

Please check your child’s planner for any changes to the regular schedule. We will begin the week of August 28th.
Homework should not exceed 30 minutes per day. Please contact me if it consistently takes longer than this to
complete the nightly homework.
Incentives: Students who successfully complete their homework throughout the nine weeks will get to participate in Homework Hall-A-day. In Homework Hall-A-Day, students will be able to participate in fun activities such as drawing/art, games, dancing, etc.
Please help your child make sure their homework is completed nightly and put back in their Daily Folder.
• Please send a signed and dated note to me indicating any changes in your child’s transportation by 3:00p.m.
• Emails and phone calls are not acceptable for changes in transportation.
• Please try to keep you child’s transportation consistent throughout the week.
Parents have the option of allowing their children to use their prepay accounts for all items, including snacks, or strictly for
lunch trays. If you choose to restrict your child’s use of the prepay funds, please
send a note indicating your wishes to the cafeteria cashier .
Please pre-pay. Please try to utilize the Meal Pay Plus system online to avoid lost
lunch money. If you send money to school, please send it in a clearly labeled envelope or baggie with your child’s name, teacher,
and amount enclosed.
• Students should wear their class shirt on the day of the field trip.
• Although we love our future Stampedersthey are not allowed to attend our field trip – NO siblings are allowed to attend SSE field trips.
• Every parent attending the field trip must have a Raptor Badge.
• We will go to the zoo on Nov. 9th.
1st Graders LOVE field trips.
• Please send your child with a nutritious, non-messy, snack every day.
• Please pack the snack separately from their lunch. 1st Grade has an early lunch, so we will eat a snack in the afternoon.
• Snacks should be NUT FREE.• Please do not send snacks that require a
spoon.
• Your child may bring his/her own water bottle for use during the day. However, please ensure that the bottle has a spill proof top. WATER ONLY!
