Young people from the ANC Youth League and the Young Communist League have threatened to pull down the statue of Paul Kruger, which stands outside the Rustenburg offices of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality. Recently, the youths stormed the area and placed a huge plastic bag around the statue before destroying a monument that had been placed at the bottom of the statue. “We are not happy with this statue because it glorifies the apartheid era,” one of the youths told Leseding News. “We want the municipality to pull it down. If they do not do this, we will come back and pull it down ourselves,” he added. The plastic bag has since been removed from the statue. Afriforum deputy CEO Alana Bailey said the organisation opposes the brewing national wave pushing for the removal and vandalism of colonial statues, and has called for a moratorium on the subject. “These statues are part of our country’s history and should be protected from any form of vandalism. It’s really disappointing to see political leaders like Julius Malema supporting groups that want to remove a part of history from society. “Government must act against such actions,” said Bailey. “We urgently need a national summit where South Africans will reflect on the country’s heritage and find better ways on how we continue to move forward as a nation. “Politically leaders must not be driven by emotions on this matter,” she said. A statue of Cecil John Rhodes was recently removed from the premises of the University of Cape Town. The decision to remove the statue has sparked similar efforts to remove other statues around South Africa that are linked to the country’s colonial past. NWU SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH BBKTA

The North-West University’s (NWU) Mafikeng Campus and Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela Traditional Authority signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create a platform for future collaboration. This historic agreement was signed by Prof Mashudu Davhana-Maselesele, the campus rector, and Kgosi Nyalala Pilane, traditional leader of Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela (BBK) on 31 March at the Mafikeng Campus. The strategic goals of the BBK are to improve and grow its rural economy to alleviate poverty and underdevelopment through programmes that will address these challenges. The agreement with the NWU can contribute towards these goals, as the NWU is strategically placed and has the capacity to offer expertise and structural support. According to Prof Davhana-Maselele, the NWU has identified community engagement as a strategic priority to build the innovative character of the university and thereby make a contribution to the community at large. “The collaboration between the two parties will result in research projects and programmes and initiatives to improve and grow the economy of the BBK community,” says Prof Davhaha-Maselele. “Over the years, the BBK has partnered with various entities in local, national and provincial government on a number of education initiatives and has positioned itself as a model for rural development,” said Kgosi Pilane. “This agreement is an example of how universities and external institutions such as traditional authorities can work together not only for the benefit of the two parties, but also for the community at large.”

REAGILE GIRL’S KILLERSYET TO BE FOUNDThe alleged murderers of Reagile girl, Kegomoditswe Boikanyo (9) are yet to be found. Kegomoditswe and her cousin, Basetsana Octavia Modumo went missing on 24 September 2014.Kegomoditswe’s naked and decomposed body was found floating in Kgetleng River at Finfoot farm near Brits four days after she was reported missing. Body parts including the head, hands, breasts and private parts were missing from the corpse. She was buried on 1 April at Reagile location. The whereabouts of her cousin are still unknown. However, the premier of the North West province, Supra Mahumapelo, has reassured the community of Reagile of

government’s commitment to ensuring that the kidnappers and killers of Kegomoditswe will face the full might of the law.“We need to make it our responsibility to find out who those people are and why did they do this. They do not deserve to be amongst us as they are also defeating the objectives of the reconciliation, healing and renewal programme initiated in the province,” said Mahumapelo speaking at a memorial service recently. Mahumapelo urged communities and traditional healers to work together with the police in finding these criminals. He described the perpetrators of this horrendous crime as “heartless” and “irresponsible”.

A three day music extravaganza in Mogwase was not just entertainment but a golden opportunity for residents of 109 villages of Moses Kotane Local Municipality. Just two weeks after the political icon, Moses Kotane was reburied at his home village of Phella, thousands of residents converged at Mogwase stadium during the Easter weekend to support and promote local initiatives to honor Kotane. Renowned artists like Dr Malinga, Candy Tsa Mandebele, KB Motsilenyane,

Busiswa, Badimo Jazz Band, Clerence The Gospel Singer (CTGS) and many more artists entertained the crowd and had an opportunity to dine and wine with more than 5000 children from local villages. Genplay Play Broadcast Media and Moses Kotane Foundation are embarking on a yearlong support of the 109 villages of the municipality named after Kotane. They will uplift and promote local artists.Candy adopted two 10-year-olds local kids, Onalenna Serongwane and (10) Katlego Maqubu (10), she will mentor them until they become national stars. Moses Kotane Local Municipality also bought more than 10 stalls for local entrepreneurs. “The reason was to boost and support local SMMEs in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality. The event was well attended and supported. “Now we have agreed with artists like Dr Malinga and Candy to unearth talent in our

villages. Moses Kotane remains brought joy and happiness in our villages,” said Kefi lwe Motloba, the event organizer.

Organizers of the recently held Bojanala Film Week have decided to make next year’s edition a provincial showcase. The fi lm week, which was held in Rustenburg from 25 – 28 March, was facilitated by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the department of arts and culture. “We had an overwhelming response this year. It was really amazing. On the opening day, when we screened the fi rst movie, we did not have enough seats to cater for the people who turned up. Some of them ended up having to sit down on the fl oor,” Kea Malao, one of the organizers of the showcase, said. An initiative of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, the fi lm week is aimed at promoting and establishing fi lm activity to the out of school youth within the Bojanala district. For the duration of the fi lm week, the NFVF also hosted workshops on various aspects of fi lmmaking, such as directing, producing and

scriptwriting. The function of the workshops will serve to enlighten aspiring fi lmmakers of the intense work and development needed to be a fi lm-maker. The scriptwriting workshops were facilitated by Loyiso Maqoma, who was a head writer for South Africa’s popular soapies, Isidingo and Scandal. Blitz Patrole’s Isaac Mogajane took charge of the producing workshops while the directing workshops were led by the talented award-winning Akin Omotoso.Apart from the workshops, participants also enjoyed screenings of local fi lms; Hear Me Move, Hard To Get, iNumber Number and Between Friends.“Next year, the fi lm week is turning fi ve years old and this will be a good time to ensure that the event becomes provincial. This is the correct time for us to spread our wings,” Malao said.

Obituary – George TauseA life remembered

BBO

D

“Today we are no longer South Africans based on race and culture. The segregation is no longer there and this has allowed younger generations to have better opportunities.” – George Tause, 1959 – 2015.

The Mayor of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality – Clr. Louis Diremelo – learned with shock, of the untimely death of Councilor George Tause. Councilor Tause passed away on 7 April after he was involved in a car accident. Clr. Tause was a committed, hardworking leader who always went an extra mile to make sure that the rights of ordinary people are promoted and protected. His activities during the country’s liberation struggle are well documented and those who were close to him know that he was an ANC activist in the then Bophuthatswana. Tause was arrested several times for his underground ANC activities and although

his life was constantly in danger, he did not waver in his fight to make sure that the country attained its independence from apartheid rule. As a Councilor, Tause worked tirelessly to serve the community and made sure that some of the issues raised during meetings were addressed by the district municipality. As the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), Clr. Tause was at the forefront of leading community meetings which made residents aware of how the district municipality was managing its funds. On behalf of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality and on my own behalf, I would like to offer our condolences to Clr. Tause’s family and relatives.

May His Soul Rest in Peace.

On Thursday, the North West province honoured one of South Africa’s liberation heroes – Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati by presenting her with a car. Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati was born in Tlapeng Village, few kilometres from Ganyesa in Kagisano-Molopo area within the district of Bophirima, now called Dr Ruth Mompati District Municipality after it (the district) being named after her. Born on the 14 September 1925, she grew up in a thoroughly rural environment. Between 1933 and 1940 she attended Vryburg United Primary Schools, where she completed Standard six (6). Two years later, she continued her schooling at Tigerkloof Institution of Education where she received her Native Lower Primary Certificate. In 1944 she started her teaching career at the age of nineteen in Dithakwaneng Primary School near Vryburg.“She is passionately known as “Mama Ruta” within her community”She got married in 1952 and lost her job due to apartheid laws regulated that black female teachers were not supposed to get married. Immediately after, she moved to Johannesburg and became an active member of the ANC Orlando branch. In the same year, she studied short-hand typing. In 1953 she was employed by Mandela and Tambo Attorneys as a short-hand typist. She became a member of the National Executive

Committee of the ANC Women’s League and become one of the founder members of the Federation of South African Women the following year. She was one of the organisers and leaders of the Anti Pass Law march in Pretoria on the 9th August 1956.In 1962, she left the country for Military training with MKhondo We Sizwe in the then

Soviet Union. She could not return to the Country to do her underground work because her colleague had given evidence against the ANC leadership. She had to become the full-time cadre of the underground movement in exile. In 1966 she was elected to the National Executive Committee and during the same year she was transferred to the ANC‘s office

in Zambia, but continued between Tanzania and Zambia during the course of her work in the ANC President’s office. In 1966, she was sent to Germany by the movement as the ANC Women’s League secretary to represent the Federation of South African Women in its secretariat. In 1990, she was chosen to be part of the ANC delegation that negotiated the peaceful transition with the government at Groote Schuur. In 1994 she was elected to the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa and served as a Member of Parliment from 1994-1996 before she seconded to become an Ambassador to Switzerland until 2000.In 1996, Mama Ruth was awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in Education by the University of the North West in Mahikeng. The scholarship was named after her by Huston-Tillotson University, in Austin, Texas, USA. In 1998, the Medical University of South Africa awarded her an Honorary Doctorate. She has been the Mayor of Naledi Local Municipality from June 2000 until May 2010. In consolidating the vision of the society and the country she liberated, this true activist and daughter of the soil continues to serve community in various capacities. She serves on many boards, including being Chairperson of the Swiss-South Africa Corporative Initiative Trust.

WHEN AN ICON GOES – TRIBUTE TO GEORGE TAUSEWhat do you do, when suddenly the world and you are robbed off a valuable being?Do you scorn his enemies, because this was not just an ordinary person? This was not just a person whose name would be mentioned in vain, during his life time and now that he has suddenly departed this world. Yes, he made a lot of enemies because whenever the truth needed to be told he wilfully raised his hand.If that icon is George Tause (formerly known as Mathusi) do you have a scale to measure the loss? You look into the life of this great man, and the next question is why the African National Congress is losing such great people.Bra George came into my life in the nineties, a man who never doubted his conviction to take the homeland regime head on. The news of his death came as a shock to most of us. He is the one who groomed leaders like Mpho Khunou, the Executive Mayor of Rustenburg. A typical politician, he was never short of controversies. When he was the Secretary of the former Western Transvaal, he angrily

pronounced “With the match box we will topple the Bophuthatswana regime”. I remember that he was a true activist who never waited for things to happen. Bra George came to my home one evening, on the eve of just the many protest actions he helped to organise. “We need to work,” he said to me.“But Bra George, there’s only the two of us,” I replied. He insisted that others would join us on the way. That night revealed the passion with which Bra George had towards the fight against apartheid and its structures. We had to barricade the streets of Tlhabane, a task that was usually left for young people like me and other young activists, but Duku-Duku, as a he was later known to those inspired by his energies, thought that it had to be done by someone (barricading the streets). The following morning Tlhabane was black with smoke, and Bra George’s name was on the lips of every one, activists and the police

alike. When it was time for Bra George and others to take their rightful place in politics, some thought that he should be relegated to ‘building community structures’.But Bra George and the likes of Christina Delport built the powerful Greater Rustenburg Community Forum, an initiative which saw the birth of Radio Mafisa as we know it today. That was the thing about Bra George, as the saying goes you can’t put a good man down.Today as we mourn his death we still believe that Bra George should not have departed this world as an ordinary councillor. He was not an ordinary man. There is so much to say about this great man, a task I generously leave to many of us who knew this man of many talents. MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE

Rise in Easter road death toll The number of fatalities over the Easter weekend increased nearly 50% compared to the same period last year. This alarming rise in the death rate was revealed by Transport Minister Dipuo Peters at a media briefing held at the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s offices on Wednesday. The preliminary death toll on SA’s roads was 287. This eclipses the figure of 193 last year and is also more than the figure of 241 recorded over the Easter weekend of 2013.The total number of fatal accidents over the holiday was 208, with the majority, 38, occurring in KwaZulu-Natal.The province also had the highest number of fatalities at 55, with 44 people losing their lives in road crashes in Limpopo and 38 in Gauteng. The Eastern Cape recorded 35 fatalities, with 34 in Mpumalanga, 28 in the North West and 26 in the Western Cape.Pumulani toll plaza along the N1 recorded the highest number of vehicles an hour over the weekend when 4,494 vehicles passed through it between 10am and 11am on Monday.Peters also said there was a significant change in the time periods during which people drove over the weekend.“Most of the road users opted to travel after dusk, which on its own brings about risks of fatigue, speeding, unroadworthy vehicles and drunken driving.“These carnages and unwarranted misery brought about by irresponsible and lackadaisical behaviour can and should be avoided,” the minister said.

She said motorists had to take responsibility. “The figures show that South Africans don’t want to learn. We cannot be at peace with ourselves when we do not take responsibility.”

ALBERTS EXPLAINS SHARKS’ POOR FORMReturning Springbok loose forward Willem Alberts has come out in defence of his under-fire Sharks teammates.Alberts, who confirmed that he is available for selection for the Sharks trip to Johannesburg and encounter the high-flying Lions, backed the men from Durban to bounce back with a vengeance. The Sharks have not had the best start to their Super Rugby campaign - losing three of their first four matches and saw the Crusaders put 52 points past them last week. The Durban-based outfit’s poor discipline has also resulted in several senior players getting slapped with l;enthy bans.Bismark Du Plessis was the first to fall, with a four-week suspension - after a kick to the head of Chiefs No.8 Michael Leitch. He will return to play on April 19. Frans Steyn was the second foul-play blow, with a five-week suspension for a spear-tackle on Chiefs flyhalf Aaron Cruden in the same match. He will return to action on May 3.Jean Deysel, the latest guilty party, received a whopping seven-week slam - for a knee to the head of Crusaders flank Matt Todd. He will return on May 23. “It was frustration that was building up, and there were high expectations for the players and the team, and we haven’t met those standards,” Alberts said at a media briefing in Durban.“It was also a new beginning for us again this season, with new coaching staff, as well as a few injuries.“Then some bad decisions, which hurt us a bit, resulting in players [being banned] that will not be with us for some weeks.”Alberts is still positive though that the Sharks can regroup and clinch a play-off spot.“We [the Sharks] are still in it, we had a hiccup last week, but luckily next week we get a new chance and we have to take that chance and go forward.”When things start to go bad, it feels like it’s all going bad, but I think we are on the right track. “We just need to regroup and believe in the guys who are playing, work hard for each other, and hard work will pay-off,” Alberts added. In the rare bit of good news for the Sharks, surrounded by a cloud bad press, Alberts is feeling fresh and is ready for much-needed game time. “I’m feeling good, it’s been an up-and-down year so far, lots of training with no playing, it is good to be back and I am ready to play,” Alberts said.

GOAL FEST IN NEDBANK CUPLocal football fans are being treated to a high-scoring tournament in this year’s edition of the Nedbank Cup. A total of 49 goals were scored in open play in the 14 matches that have been played so far in the last 32 stage of the competition. Ajax Cape Town’s 9 – 1 rout of Mainstay United produced the most number of goals in a single match while there was another glut of goals in Black Leopards’ 6 – 2 win over FC Cape Town on Saturday. Defending champions Orlando Pirates and their bitter rivals – Kaizer Chiefs – asserted their status among the favourites to win the title. Pirates dispatched Tornado FC by a 4 – 0

margin while Chiefs also made light work of Edu Sport to win their match by the same scoreline. AmaZulu and Chippa United were the only teams from the PSL that were eliminated from the competition. The Durban-based team were handed a 2 – 1 defeat by National First Division side Golden Arrows while Chippa were beaten after penalties by Natal United. This was after the match had finished goalless in regulation time. Chiefs striker Siphelele Mthembu leads the scoring charts with three goals to his name while Thandani Ntshumayelo is just a single goal behind him. Platinum Stars striker Eleazar Rodgers – who scored a brace in his side’s 3 – 0 win over The Magic – says the high number of goals demonstrate the superiority of the

topflight league.“Most of the matches that produced many gaols involved a PSL team playing against a team in the lower divisions,” Rodgers said. “Without taking anything away from the other teams, I think there is a difference in terms of standards between the PSL and the other divisions. However, I think there will be less goals as we progress in the tournament,” he added. The Nedbank Cup is South Africa’s premier club football knockout tournament. While many formats have been used over the years, the tournament has always been based on the idea of giving lower league and amateur teams a chance to compete with clubs from the top league for the cup. The tournament, based on the English FA Cup format, carries a ‘David versus Goliath’ theme.

STARS OUT OF NEDBANK CUP

Platinum Stars suffered a 3-1 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup’s last 16 round. Stars did not do badly in the game as they fought till the last sweat, but it was Sundowns that were more hungry for the spot in the next round than any other team. The first minute of the match saw Robert Ng’ambi directing cross from the right flank but just went near the post. It was this very same chance that gave the first half entertainment and took supporters from quiet to chanting. Sundowns were great in the first half hour and clocked a lead at just minutes by Mzikayise Mashaba, who received it as a build up from Themba Zwane and Siyanda Zwane. Stars could not have let Sundowns lead before half time as they played well and built good balls towards the front. In their response, just before the break, Robert Ng’ambi put Ndumiso Mabena into space on the right of the penalty area and his low shot-cross was swept home by Eleazar Rodgers to make it 1-1. Second half received more scoring chances and was rhythmic in a sense that Stars were fighting for another goal, unfortunately their game changed as Stars were somewhat unfortunate after being forced into replacing key attacking players Ng’ambi and Mogakolodi Ngele, who both suffered injuries In the 82nd minute, Billiat scored the second for Sundowns and two minutes later, Kekana extended the lead with his shot direct from a free kick to end the match to place Sundowns in the quarter finals.Following the loss, Platinum Stars can now focus on the league, a priority at this stage. Willem Jackson, who just been appointed coach after Allan Freese was put on special leave, said: “At this point we are faced with

reality of us sitting at the bottom and it is up to us to make sure we leave that spot. We have really played well, and I am looking at motivating the players to move forward and work hard. “Nedbank Cup was a great opportunity but it was not our priority, we just had to make sure we represent the club well, which I think we have. “Sundowns was not an easy side, but we gave them a run for their money, we have. Many thanks to the supporters that came through to support us on that day, we are grateful. Now, we have a break and we must utilise it to our best advantage, the journey is still on.”

EKSTEEN, BAHLMANN CLAIM GOLD AT IMPI CHALLENGE

The Van Gaalens Cheese Farm in Hartebeespoort, North West Province, was buzzing with excitement on Saturday, 14 March 2015 when close to 1000 adventure seekers lined up to be part of the action of the first IMPI Challenge of 2015. Claude Eksteen was the competitor to beat in the men’s Elite Race, running to victory in a lightning fast time of 01 hour 42 minutes 05 seconds. “I felt good today,” said Eksteen. “The new obstacles definitely made things more interesting, while running the course in reverse to last year mixed things up a bit. I went out hard in the beginning. The IMPI races feature a lot of trail running, this suits me. “I recommend this event to others because of the vibe. Nothing is too extreme and there is a good variation, with an added fun aspect. Your weaknesses and fears will be challenged, but not to the extreme,” he added. Greg Avierinos came in second, while Thomas Van Tonder finished third. IMPI newcomer Patricia Bahlmann set the

course on fire in the women’s Elite Race. With a finishing time of 02 hours 07 minutes 24 seconds, she was unstoppable. “I actually entered the IMPI Elite Race by default,” said Bahlmann. “I was supposed to take part in the AfricanX Trailrun this weekend, and was literally boarding the plane when my partner phoned to say that his brother had been in an accident and that he would not be able to compete. “Claude Eksteen then invited me to do the IMPI Elite Race instead. It was amazing, the running was hard and the obstacles were fabulous. I am very much a trail runner the obstacles are a bonus as they make the event more challenging. I am very excited as I have found an event that I will definitely keep taking part in,” she added. Anita Obrien came in second, while Carina Marx finished third. The Festival Village was teaming with activity driven by entertainment, good food and a great vibe. A marked spectator route gave family members and friends the opportunity to show support and cheer on loved ones.
