Les verbes pronominaux
Pronominal Verbs
Recall the verb “s’appeler”
It means “to call oneself”, so when the action reflects on the subject of the action, we use these verbs.
Qu’est-ce qu’ils font?
(1) (2) (3)
(4) (5)
Prenons un exemple:se réveiller = to wake upAu présent:
Je me réveilleTu te réveillesIl/elle/on se réveilleNous nous réveillonsVous vous réveillezIls/elles se réveillent
Verbs can be “pronominal” or “non pronominal”. Il se lave : verbe pronominal, since there is a pronoun directly
referring to the subject.
a) Il lave sa voiture : verbe non pronominal, since there is not a pronoun
directly referring to the subject, here to himself. b) Il la lave : verbe non pronominal, since there is no pronoun
directly referring to the subject, the direct object pronoun “la” refers to “la voiture”
Au passé composé
Se doucher
je me suis douché(e)tu t’es douché(e)il s’est douchéelle s’est douchée
nous nous sommes douché(e)svous vous êtes douché(e)(s)ils se sont douchéselles se sont douchées
Ouai!!
Important!
Note that the auxiliary used with « un verbe pronominal » in the passé
composé will always be ‘être”.
Therefore, the participe passé must agree with the subject.
À l’infinitif Remember that when two verbs are used with the
same subject, the second verb is in the infinitive but if it is a pronominal verb, make sure the pronoun of this pronominal verb corresponds to the subject.
Exemple :J’aime me laver les cheveux.Tu aimes te laver les cheveux.Il aime se laver les cheveux.Elle aime se laver les cheveux. Nous aimons nous laver les cheveux. Vous aimez vous laver les cheveux.Ils aiment se laver les cheveux.Elles aiment se laver les cheveux.
Et la négation?
The positioning of ne and pas in a sentence:
Tu te laves. Tu t’es lavé(e). Tu veux te laver.
Tu ne te laves pas.Tu ne t’es pas lavé(e).
Tu ne veux pas te laver.
À l’impératif
(the pronoun is always placed after the verb and the hyphen)
Se laver Se mettre Lave-toi! Mets-toi (des bottes)! Lavons-nous! Mettons-nous (des
pulls)! Lavez-vous! Mettez-vous (un anorak)!

Conjuguez ces verbes àl’impératif! Se réveiller
