A Brief History of the Regions of France

• Before the French Revolution of 1789, France was made up of about 30 provinces.

• During the Revolution, the département, was created. • The purpose of départements was to break up the power of the old

provinces and centralize authority. • There are currently 95 départements in France and 22

regions/provinces of France.• Each region has its own social & economic development plan and

addresses the national government with its developmental issues.
