Youth Updates—Jason Thompson

Youth Night/Drumming/Outings

Youth activities such as Youth Night, Drumming and Outings will be put off for the first part

of September due to the usual back to school routines. We are looking to get some more ideas

from parents and the older youth.

Update from August 28th Parents and Youth Meeting

We may be looking to split up the ages again for Youth Night. Mondays will be for the younger

kids and Tuesdays will be for the older youth. We also might look into the possibility of split-

ting up the youth outings—one for the younger kids and one for the older kids.

The main point is we need a bigger attendance. We hope to include and involve whatever trail-

er park parents/youth that we can.

September 5th and 12th Parents and Youth Meetings

The Youth and Cultural Programs have been experiencing a steady decline in attendance and it

is now to a point where we need to determine whether we work at transforming or revitalizing

the deliverables of each of the programs or we, with regret, terminate one or both of the pro-

grams for lack of participation by community. The purpose of these meetings is to engage par-

ents and the older youth in defining what it is that will make this program work, to collect ideas

so that we can reshape the youth and cultural programs so that they work for you. This may

include discussions around time, days, who and what we need to help make these programs

work for the community.

Please join us for a meeting at the Leq’á:mel Gymnasium for the Parents and Youth Meeting

on Wednesday September 5th, 2012 and Wednesday September 12th, 2012 at 5 pm.

COHI / Dental Clinic

Please spread the word—Lori Bonnefoy will be in our office on Tuesday September

11th in the morning accompanied with the community nurses.

Lori is the supervisor for the Children’s Oral Health Initiative (COHI). This program is

designed to prevent and control tooth decay in young First nations and Inuit children

and to set the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

The program targets children aged 0 to 7 years and their parents/caregivers and also

pregnant women.

If you wish to visit with Lori and obtain some information or dental products, please

ensure to sign up at the front desk. There is no charge to sign up or receive the fluoride

varnish through COHI. Participants receive toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other dental

related goodies.

If you wish to sign up for the dental clinic or COHI it would be helpful to have your

status card or at least know your number. The Care Card may also be useful and some

people may have coverage through this.

If you have any other questions related to this visit, you may wish to contact COHI

directly at 1-877-411-3200.
