OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW LEARNING CENTRE AND CAFETERIAToday was exciting as we experienced a rare event – the official opening of the new Learning Centre and Cafeteria. James Merlino, Minister for Education and Harriet Shing MLA for Eastern Victoria were here to cut the ribbon. They spent time touring the new facilities and speaking with students. Our College Student Leaders, Jade Baker, Georgia Clayton, Renee Davidson, Braden Lewis and Scott Simpson-Brewer led the tour, which included representatives from Law Architects, Mackie Builders, the Department of Education and our DSC College Council. Jade and Renee spoke to the gathering, highlighting the benefits the new buildings bring to student learning and the college community.

STAFFING CHANGESWe have had some staffing changes. At the start of this term, our Year 7 Learning Culture Leader, Kerrie Wainwright took up a position as Acting Assistant Principal at Drouin West Primary School. Kerrie has been working at Drouin Secondary College as a highly skilled and valued teacher and leader for the past 18 years. While we miss her very much we know she will be an asset to Drouin West PS. We wish her well and hope to see her back at DSC in 2020.

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLYAt the start of term we held our ANZAC Assembly with special guest Mr Rod McNab reminding us of the four qualities valued by the soldiers who fought on the Kokoda Track: Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice. On ANZAC Day our College Student Leaders carried the flags in the march, laid a wreath on behalf of Drouin Secondary College and spoke to the gathering about these four qualities and how we can live them today. Our choir also led the singing of the national anthem.

Country Bus TravelNotice to all Parents and StudentsCountry buses (this does not include in town bus services) are provided as a free service to eligible students for the sole purpose of providing transport between home and school.

Casual travel in the past has caused overcrowding on some buses which creates serious concerns with respect to safety. This year most buses are already running to their capacity so seating is not available.

In accord with Department of Education and Training and Department of Infrastructure guidelines, no bus passes will be issued for any reason other than to facilitate short term emergency housing.

We understand this may cause inconvenience however, in the best interests of student safety, we must follow Department guidelines as closely as possible.

Maureen Hickman Transport Coordinator, Drouin Secondary College

WARRAGUL TOWN BUSWarragul town bus will not be running on the following days due to student free days at Warragul Regional College.

COLLEGE COMMUNITY EVENTSRecent College community events include, Year 7 2020 Information Day and the Parent Information Evening, Year 10 and Year 11 Careers Expos, the Cyberia and Macbeth performances and inter-school sporting events. Thanks to all staff who organised and supported these events and to students for your positive participation.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAYAt the Professional Learning Day for staff on May 3rd, teachers collaborated to develop their skills in particular areas of the Drouin Secondary College Teaching & Learning Framework. This will continue in Twilight Professional Learning sessions during this term.

ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEYThe annual Student Attitudes to School Survey is currently being completed by students. The college uses this data to reflect on how our students are responding to learning in the classroom, wellbeing and pastoral programs, their self-confidence and relationships with each other and their teachers. To make the changes we need to keep improving, we also need to know how the most important people in the college – the students – are thinking and feeling.

MOTHER'S DAY CLASSICOn Sunday 12th May, our Year 12 VCAL students will once again be organising the Mother’s Day Classic. They have already run the Pink Stumps Day on Tuesday 7th organising a casual clothes day and lunchtime activities. On Sunday, the run or walk around the Drouin Golf Course involving the Drouin community is their major project for the year. All funds raised will be donated to breast cancer research. I hope the day is really successful.

HOUSE CROSS COUNTRYOn Monday 13th May students and staff will participate in the House Cross Country. This is the final whole school House event for the year and we hope to have all students participating in this fun activity with their friends.

NAPLAN NAPLAN testing will be in full swing next week for all Year 7 and 9 students. Teachers gain important insights into student learning from this testing. It is important that students try to complete the tests as well as they can, so we can be sure the data we receive is reliable and helpful.

Finally, we will soon be at the halfway point of Term 2 with students well into the learning cycle. This is the stage of the semester when students will be completing learning tasks in all their subjects. Please encourage your child to do all tasks to the best of their ability. We have Progress Reports coming out in week 6.

Thanks to all DSC staff for your great work and to parents for supporting our student’s learning.

DOVE Cambodia Information EveningRecently the DOVE Cambodia program held its information session for the next program in 2020. The night was extremely well attended with over 50 students and their parents filling Moondah. There was an excited buzz around the students as they learnt of the next opportunity they could be part of in 2020. Parents soon realised the enormous commitment the program requires but students were still very enthusiastic and interested in putting forward their application forms. The program application forms are available from the College and close on 31st May. All students in Year 9 and 10 are eligible to apply.

What are our students reading in Term 2?

Year 7 Things A Map Won’t Show You or Trash (APP class), Cambridge Essential Maths, wide-reading.

Year 8 Salt to the Sea, Cambridge Essential Maths, wide-reading.

Year 9 Deadly Unna, Cambridge Essential Maths, wide-reading.

Year 10 Macbeth; Catcher in the Rye (in preparation for Semester 2 study), Cambridge Essential Maths, Psychology in Action, wide-reading.

Year 11 Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, texts for electives.

Year 12 Year of Wonders, The Crucible (in preparation for Unit 4 study), texts for electives.

In addition to the above texts, there are also documents on Moodle for reading at every year level.

Tips for helping to make a difference to your child’sreadingskillsfromYear7to12.

Encourage reading books that have whole sentences. Choices might include novels, short stories, non-fiction and graphic novels. Text messages do not fit into this category.

Encourage a routine of reading regularly and provide a non-distracting environment. Read the same books and talk about them. ‘Talking about the stories helps…connect in a way that asking “Hey, how was your day?” never could,’ according to Why Kids Stop Reading for Fun by Age 9 (And What to Do about It).

Model reading – read what you like to read. Sometimes even share passages that impressed you or info you found interesting.

NAPLAN ONLINEIn 2019, our students in Year 7 and 9 will sit NAPLAN online. They will complete the tests on their netbook instead of using a pencil and paper. Drouin Secondary was one of the first schools to transition over to NAPLAN online last year.

At the end of Term 1, the Year 7 and 9 students completed a practice test online so they will know what to expect when they sit NAPLAN online in May. Students seemed to find the system easy to navigate and they will now be familiar with how the testing will work online.

To get an idea of what the tests look like, you can visit the public demonstration site at www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

The bulk of NAPLAN testing will be conducted next week from 14th to 17th May.

As with the practice tests, students will need to have their netbooks fully charged and bring headphones and a lead pencil with them to test sessions. For those students who do not currently have headphones a limited number of headphones are available for purchase from the general office for $1 per pair.

Visual Communication DesignDesign Industry Practice Forums

Unit 3 Visual Communication Design students recently gained some valuable insights into design industry practice through informal forums with design professionals. Students had the opportunity to ask a series of questions to a Graphic Designer working in the communication field and an Interior Designer working in the environmental field. Graphic Designer, Jo Griffin from Drouin based design group Homegrown Design and Interior Designer Maria Canty both discussed the importance of good communication, understanding the needs of the client, constraints of the design brief and their roles and responsibilities throughout the design process. Our VCE Visual Communication Design students now have some in-depth notes to help them prepare for their upcoming SAC. A huge thanks to both Jo and Maria for donating their time and expertise to assist our VCE students.

Collingwood Netball ClinicOn 5th April many keen netball students had the opportunity to meet and train with two players from the Collingwood Netball Club. Natalie Medhurst and Shimona Nelson are two extremely respected players in the netball community and took the time out of their busy schedule to run a training clinic for some extremely excited students. Nat Medhurst has represented Australia on many occasions and has spent most of her life playing netball, which has led her to have a wealth of knowledge about the sport. Shimona on the other hand was born in Jamaica and has a basketball background until just last year. This year will be the second season that Shimona has played netball and says she is learning every day but loves the sport. Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the girls before they commenced the training side of the clinic. The girls were also able to learn new skills and drills from Nat and Shimona and were able to improve some of the areas that either Nat or Shimona pointed out needed improving. What a great opportunity for girls wanting to improve their game. After the training the girls asked more questions of mostly Nat as she explained her journey of how she become a professional netballer from being scouted at a young age to playing for the Australian Diamonds at World Cups and Commonwealth Games. I think a key message that the girls should take from the day is that nobody should compare themselves to others, Nat explained just because one person gets into a team before you doesn’t mean that you won’t get into the team next time.

On behalf of all the students that attended the clinic I would like to say thank you to both Natalie Medhurst and Shimona Nelson for taking the time to attend our school, and also to the teachers who helped organise this event.

Wi nt er is C om i ngThe Weather Is Turning Cold...On cold days students could be wearing a white tee shirt,

with a school shirt over the top,

a school jumper,

or both types of jackets,

a school beanie or scarf.

That is 4 or 5 layers of clothing plus a beanie and scarf. All totally acceptable school uniform. This should be enough clothing to keep students warm on even the coldest day. There is no need for students to be wearing non-uniform items to school. Students will be asked to remove non-uniform items of clothing.

Students are expected to be in full school uniform on the way to school, at school and on the way home from school. School uniform is one of our High 5.

If families are struggling financially to purchase a uniform jacket then contact the school and we will try and assist.

You can purchase uniform items at the uniform shop.
