When Leonard Joel was selected as the

auctioneer to disperse the private collection

of, arguably, Australia’s most popular

artist it was not lost on me how special our

selection was. I think in many ways Leonard

Joel’s lack of pretension combined with its

unparalleled history in Australia of single-

owner dispersals /offerings makes us the

perfect platform for this significant moment

in Australian popular artistic culture. In

July Pro Hart will join Sir Hans Heysen, E.

Phillips Fox, E. Carrick Fox, Blamire Young

and David Bromley as another artist that

has found the need to engage Leonard Joel

for our collection dispersal services and it

is nothing short of a joy to be handling this

“most Australian of artists”, to borrow Jeff

Makin’s description from his 2011 publication

Critical Moments.

A read of Makin’s short piece on Pro Hart

becomes a succinct analysis, not only of the

artist but also of how we Australians have

always “interpreted” Hart’s work. Makin

makes two very interesting and valid points.

Firstly, that as the most popular Australian

artist his representation in public galleries

should be both expanded and better

embraced and secondly that Hart was quite

literally the groundbreaker in providing a

youthful Australian collecting community a

non-confrontational and satisfying stepping-

stone from which they could begin to

understand art and ultimately the Australian

art vernacular. If for no other reason Pro

Hart’s accessibility (to borrow another

Makin insight), via his knowing “naive-

style” language, will endure as an important

contribution to the 20th century Australian

art movement. The artist that playfully

and irreverently dabbled in sponsored

advertisements (as did Andy Warhol) should

be remembered for much more than just that.

It is with great honour that Leonard Joel has

been selected as the auctioneer of choice for

this monumental single-owner auction.

Martin. The exhibition will be opened by Rupert Myer AM, Saturday 30 August

Pro hArT (1928-2006)WOrkS FrOM The ArTIST’S eSTATe, BrOken hIll

Close to a decade after Pro Hart’s passing, his

estate is offering the artist’s most prized and

personal works from his private collection

which he was unable to part with during

his lifetime. Many may be surprised by the

breadth of Pro Hart’s practice across the one

hundred and seventy two paintings and one

rare sculpture. While self-taught, Hart has

often been labelled mistakenly as naive, a tag

at which he bristled. Betty Churcher, former

Director of the National Gallery of Australia

commented that unlike naive artists who

express themselves unselfconsciously and

are without interest in art history and other

artists’ work, Pro Hart “is sharply aware

of art traditions both here in Australia and

overseas. He realised what Drysdale had done

for the Riverina district he could adapt for this

semi-arid region of New South Wales. So this

is the style he uses to tell the story of life in and

around Broken Hill.” 1

The catalogue will attest to Hart’s many

facets, interests and styles being divided into

sections including Masks: Mines & Miners:

Cities & Beaches: Figures & Portraits and

Abstraction & Action Painting. A clear view

and insight into Pro Hart’s early work in

paintings is richly afforded in The B.I.C. Man

c.1975 and his self portrait titled The Yabby

Eater 1978 revealing Hart’s appreciation

of Dobell and his own artistic talent. The

collection includes some much loved

Country Race Meeting scenes presented

on a major scale, the exuberant Floral Still

Lifes and the charming Waltzing Matilda

series. Additionally his “mechanically

assisted” action paintings are represented

by an abstract cannon painting, complete

with explosive paint smatterings and

complimented by a self-referential outback

scene of Pro Hart creating aforesaid cannon-

style painting!

Befitting the personal context of this

collection is the inclusion of Hart’s most

significant and complex painting, Judas

Flying a Kite 1962. Initially the work belonged

to respected art dealer Kim Bonython and it

soon passed into the esteemed collection

of Margaret and Douglas Carnegie who

championed Hart and included it an

exhibition of their collection at the NGV in

1966. The work changed hands once more

and in 1999 Pro Hart was able to happily

reclaim his most treasured painting when

it was auctioned by Leonard Joel. Now as

things come full circle once again, collectors

will have the opportunity to acquire not

only Judas Flying a Kite along with all the

paintings in the auction with the knowledge

of its significance to the artist.

A LATE ViCToriAn DiAmonD PenDAnTIt was one of those jaw dropping moments………when the box opened and we all

gasped.

A humble country gentleman presented a pale green velvet box and

apprehensively slid it across the desk. The item had been in the family for many

years, held by his mother who had passed away ten years earlier and it was now in

his possession.

The unassuming box, a twenty fifth wedding anniversary gift, presented on 25th

April 1888, was opened to reveal a magnificent belle époque diamond pendant.

Characteristic of the era, the pendant has a bow surmount suspending a garland

style diamond drop.

The most unique, rare and captivating feature of the pendant was the octahedral

faceted diamond suspended in the centre of the garland. A most difficult shape to

calculate the weight of, ultimately estimated at 12.5carats.

The pendant will be offered in our September Fine Jewellery auction. The estimate

is currently at $40,000-$60,000.

What has been most interesting was the reported history of the piece, believed to

have been owned originally by the late Benjamin Disraeli (former prime minister of

England). Current research is being conducted in the hope that Disraeli ownership

can be conclusive.

A LATE VICTORIAN DIAMOND PENDANT

Of Belle Epoque design, the pendant features an

octahedral faceted diamond weighing an estimated

12.5cts, suspended within a pear shaped diamond

garland to a diamond set bow surmount featuring an

old European cut diamond weighing 1.20cts, in 15ct

gold and silver, in original fitted box by Streeter &

Compy, New Bond Street, London. Inscribed to the

reverse “In Commemoration of W.R. & M.M.R. Silver

Wedding 25th April 1888”.

A VERITABLE sinGle-oWner CATAloGueWhen Guy Cairnduff, Head of the Specialist Collector, was presented with no less

than ten single-owner collections for his June auction he had two choices. Firstly,

he could “dice” them according to category and follow the logic of two centuries

of cataloguing or perhaps try something a little different. He chose the latter. With

this catalogue Guy decided to present each collection distinctly and consecutively

throughout the catalogue in an effort to bring more context and personality to the

collections on offer. From collections brimming with exceptioanlly rare Chinese

porcelain through to rooms full of luxurious period and contemporary furnishings,

the approach was a hit with serious collectors and passionate decorators alike.

Guy Cairnduff: “Discreet and often small volume single-owner collections need

not be excluded any longer from the marketing benefits of larger single-owner

auctions. Individually, none of these collections warranted their own catalogue

but collectively they were more valuable than most single-owner affairs. I loved

bringing them together in this way and the result was more than pleasing.

With a pre-sale estimate of $751,000 we comfortably exceeded this and sold

$950,000 IBP”.

THe PAssION FOR PORceLAIN

The PASSION for PorCelAinAt the Leonard Joel Classic Furniture, Objects & Collectibles auction on Sunday

June 1st an important collection of Chinese objects, traversing several private

collections, was offered for public auction. Highlights abounded and amongst the

standout results was a rare Censor (lot 160) which almost doubled its estimate to

sell for $39,040 (IBP). After fierce room bidding the piece was sold anonymously

to an internet bidder. But the hunt for Chinese porcelain of exceptional rarity and

condition dominated the Asia section with lot 109, a large Chinese blue and white

vase with Ruyi lugs, selling for almost twenty times its pre-sale estimate for $15,860

(IBP). This theme continued with the much admired blue and white brush washer

(lot 114) which realised more than ten times its estimate to sell for $11,590 (IBP).

John Albrecht, National Head of Collections at Leonard Joel, commented: “We

already know the global repatriation of important Chinese art and objects is well

underway but when your top seven lots carry a pre-sale estimate of $4,600 and

they collectively realise $47,500, you can’t but help continue to be gob-smacked by

the passionate bidding that occurs now for pieces of rarity and quality”.

sTAGGerinG resulTs for MODEL boATIt would appear that the “big boys toys” phenomenon extends

to Victorian era model boats after the sale of the extremely

rare Charlotte Dundas live steam model at the Leonard Joel

Classic Furniture, Objects & Collectibles auction on June 1st

Sunday afternoon. Painstakingly constructed around 1870 the

piece was reputedly carved and built from timbers belonging

to the original vessel, which was the first practical steamship,

designed by William Symington.

With an estimate of $10,000 - $15,000 the model enjoyed

extensive pre-sale interest from institutional and private

collectors from around the world. International interest was

no doubt fuelled by the fact that the model had an extensive

exhibition history which saw it travel to international fairs in

France, Germany and the UK as a significant exhibit. After

prolonged bidding it was finally between an unknown

phone-bidder and a room bidder who finally secured the

piece for $85,400. Giles Moon, Head of Collectibles,

commented “the outstanding price achieved

reflects the importance of this model. It is a

testament to the contribution made by William

Symington to the evolution of commercial

steam shipping as we know it today.”
