Main Street, Ionia Movies ~ Rentals Live Entertainment Gary Ferguson, Manager Leo Trese, author of Seventeen Steps to Heaven, writes The director of a proposed supercolossal movie was engaged in the task of choosing an actress for the leading part in the picture. He sat at his desk with dozens of photographs spread out before him that had been supplied by various agents who were seeking the part for a client. Eventually the director put his finger on one photograph and said to his secretary, “There is exactly the one I want. Phone the woman and get her in here.” It is a big jump from Hollywood to Heaven, from a movie director to God. Yet we have here an example, however inade- quate, for the reason of your existence. Back in the limitless reaches of eternity, God made his plans for the universe and did the casting for all the parts that must be filled, down to the end of time. In his divine mind, He looked over all the pictures of all the souls, limitless in number, whom He could create. When He came to the image of you, He stopped and said, “This is a person who moves me to love. This is a person I want with me for all eternity. This is the person, too, whom I need for a special part in my plan.” Human images are always inadequate in describing God and His actions, but this story is still fundamentally true. God made you. He chose you out of all the countless millions of other souls he could have created and did not. His thoughts of you moved God. Moved Him to love you, desire you. Loved you so much He did not want to be without you. And even though there are billions of others He loves equally and did create, for you there was a special part in His plan of creation. A role for you that, while many others could do it, none could do it quite as well as you. And so God chose you. This is your vocation in life both here and for eternity. All this speaks to just how special you really are. You are called by God to fill a special part in this world and the next. You are not just one of a hundred billion souls created by God in an absent- minded moment of creativity. You are important to God and He has an intense, personal interest in you. He has poured out countless blessings on you. Our vocation imposes on us the obligation to justify God’s love for us, his hopes for us. We meet that obligation when day by day we try to do his will to the best of our ability. In all our deci- sions and in all our choices we should ask ourselves “What does God want?” instead of “What do I want?” This doesn’t mean our will and God’s will are always going to be different. God loves us totally. Frequently, He will help us know his desires for us by the gifts and talents he has given to us. We come to know his will for us in part by his making it attractive to us; by letting us think that the course of ac- tion He wants is the one we have gladly chosen for ourselves. Yet conflicts will arise and when they do we must be willing to surrender our desires to God. This unswerving attachment to God’s will is key. We rarely know what special job God has chosen for us…that job which no one else can do as well as we. It may be a particular person he will be able to reach only through us. It may be some chain of events only you can initiate or some evil only you can avert. In most cases we will not know until we are home in heaven what the particu- lar task that only we could do was. So it is of great importance that we strive every day, in all things, no matter how large or small they may be to do God’s will. So how do we know God’s will? That will be a topic for our next column. But for now remember this. God never gives up on you. He even died for us instead of replacing us when we failed to listen to Him, fail to follow Jesus. God is our loving Father who is constantly forgiving, constantly giving us another chance. He is the God of sec- ond chances. - Father Tom Tim Wall. Proud parishioner and local supporter of SS. We would like to thank Johnathan Johnson for giving a talk on Discernment to our Catechists at both St Edwards and Saint Peter & Paul during their Appre-ciation Dinners this year. The first dinner was held in Ionia on the 13

th followed by the dinner in

Lake Odessa this past Sunday. Inspired by a video clip called 4 Helpful Rules for Discernment by

Father Mike Schmitz, Johnathan helped explain to us the importance of discernment in our lives at any stage and age. He offered wonderful personal examples as well as insight into ways that we can help our youth grow into responsible young adults through discernment. Thank you Johnathan for sharing your gifts of time and talent with us, we truly treasure you and ap-preciate all that you have shared with us over these past few months; from coming into our classroom to talk to every class to leading one of our Youth Group sessions in Ionia. We appreciate the time you have spent with us in both parishes!

An Invitation to Come and See!

RCIA is an opportunity for:

those who have not been baptized.

those who have been baptized, but have little affiliation with, and/or training in the Catholic religion.

those who want to learn and ask questions about the Catholic faith.

If you would like to inquire, please call Toni McKay at 527-3610, or email to [email protected].

Becoming Catholic The “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” or “RCIA” is the par-ish-based process by which persons interested in the Catholic faith are invited to inquire about the Church, and if they so desire, join the worldwide Catholic community. RCIA provides the outline for this entire process as well as the ritual celebrations marking entry into the Catholic faith. Becoming a Christian and a Catholic is serious business, but because God is ultimately the one who calls a person to such a life-changing experience, all that is need-ed is an open heart to his word and trust in the journey he sets before you. Throughout the process of Christian initiation, usually lasting a year or longer, the entire Church promises to be there for those wishing to grow in their Christian faith. The Church stands by to patiently water and nourish and cultivate new seeds of faith, trusting in the Lord to provide a great harvest.

We hope you found that special item you simply couldn’t live without! Coffee and Rolls - Sunday, July 8th

9:00 a.m., in Apostles’ Hall Our Hosts: The Trierweiler Family! Our parish has been trying to revitalize our Sunday morning hospitality time that follows the 8:00 a.m. Mass. We were off to a GREAT start at the end of April, having volun-teer hosts through June 3rd. Since then, however, we have not been able to secure an on-going schedule of volunteers for this worthwhile time of sharing and community building. We are still hopeful that the Holy Spirit will breathe new life into this ministry. Is the Holy Spirit calling on you to help? We invite all parishioners to prayerfully consider how you might serve our parish in this area. To volunteer, please contact Diane Grummet, Deb Trierweiler, or the parish office. Thank you!

Miles Christi - Summer Silent Retreat Friday, August 17, 2018

Augustine Center, Conway, MI Brochures and registration forms can be found in the back of church. Praised by Popes and saints throughout the centuries, the Spiritual Exercises are an excellent means of sanctification. As Pope St. John Paul II expressed, “the Exer-cises are, in fact, a set of meditations and prayers in an at-mosphere of contemplation and silence, and above all, a spe-cial interior impulse, deriving from the Holy Spirit, to open am-ple spaces of the soul to the action of grace. The highest quality of the Exercises lies in the power they have to lead men and women to the very summit of prayer and divine love. This is shown through experience, by the changes in moral conduct that a single Ignation retreat has effected in the lives of thousands of people throughout history. Among the saints are Charles Borromeo, who was led by the Exercises “to adopt a more perfect form of life”; St. Francis de Sales, who wished “to serve God with the greatest possible fidelity”; St. Teresa of Jesus, who then became “the lover of lofty contemplation.” If you register and would like to carpool, please contact Yolanda Preston at 616-560-3945.

HYMNAL DRIVE! If you need an envelope, they are available on the back table of church, in the office, or you can ask Whitney. Let’s keep up our rich tradition of singing with our new hymnals!

Grief Support Group Sessions The Ministry of Consolation would like to invite anyone who has suffered the death of a loved one or a loss in their per-sonal life to join them at monthly Grief Support Group Ses-sions. The next session will be held in the SS. Peter & Paul Parish Office living room on Tuesday, July 10

th, at 6:30 p.m.

Each of the sessions offers a topic of discussion as well as time to reflect, listen, and share if one chooses. If you are interested in learning more about the Ministry of Consolation and its benefits to you or a loved one, please contact Vanessa in the Faith Formation Office at 527-3610.

Summer Decision Point

Do you love learning about our Faith? Did you see Matthew Kelly and want to learn more? Did you miss the event and want to know what the excitement is about? Chris Brown and Shana Herrman are offering the Deci-sion Point Confirmation program as make-up sessions for those confirmands who missed classes during the year, as well as anyone who is interested in attending. Our parish has been using Decision Point for the past 3 years as our Confirmation program, and it really is a world-class program. This is an opportunity to learn more about the faith, explore how the Holy Spirit is already working within you, and spend time with others with the same desire. Each session is 2 hours long, occurring between the Sunday morning Masses in the Veritas room. The six sessions in-clude 5-10 minute videos with discussion. The sessions are also independent, so you can show up to any session any time, and don't need to be at all of them.

Devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal As part of our spiritual growth, let’s come together and pray the rosary to honor our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and foster our devotion to her. To know more, call Dr. Alice Sama-ni Zozo at: 646-915-4857. Do not hesitate to leave a mes-sage. Last Sunday, seminarians in the Diocese of Grand Rapids

visited our parish. They spoke about their vocations and experiences as seminarians. This was a great opportunity for parishioners to meet our diocese's potential future priests!

Our Parish Purpose Statement - Saints Peter & Paul Parish

Our Pastoral Council has been working intensely with Father Tom to develop a Pastoral Plan for our parish. Parish Pastoral Planning is a prayerful and participative process through which a parish characterizes itself as a particular community of faith by developing its own purpose statement, assessing its strengths and resources, as well as its limitations and needs. All of this leads to making recommendations to the pastor concerning establishment of priorities and goals, and devising ways to accomplish its mission. Parish Pastoral Planning helps to answer the questions: Who are we as a parish? What are we called to do? How are we best going to do it? All of us are called to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. The mission of the Church is rooted in the mission of Christ who commanded everyone - clergy, religious, and laity - to "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15). From its earliest days the Church has responded to this mission in various ways depending upon the times and circumstances. Creating this statement of our parish’s purpose was a great challenge. The council could have simply quoted the parish purpose from the great commission of Matthew 28: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Jesus’ commission rings loud, yet there is great need in the world for the Catholic faithful to be moved to a renewed zest for the gospel, both personally and in sharing it with others. By establishing a purpose statement for our parish, the council hopes to eliminate any question as to our parish’s sacred purpose, and to ensure that the work of the parish, in all its forms, is directed toward this purpose. Our parish purpose statement: Our sacred purpose as Saints Peter and Paul Parish is to . . . use our God-given gifts . . .

Every parishioner is called upon to exercise the divinely-inspired calling and gifts conferred in Baptism for a particular function in carrying out the mission of Jesus Christ.

to awaken faith, inspire discipleship, and trust in God’s plan . . . Being a member of Saints Peter & Paul Parish is not only aimed at one’s personal sanctity. We are called to bring Christ out into the world, wherever our journey takes us, to affect the sanctity of all people. Each of us is to exude our Catholic faith as to rouse faith in others, to be an example of Christian discipleship, and to exemplify trust in God’s divine plan in all things.

so that all who enter our doors may receive, believe, and share God’s love. Whether one “enters our doors” by simply coming into contact with a parish member, or physically passes through the doors of our church building, our purpose is the same: To stir the hearts of people, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to become open to receive all the Lord unconditionally offers to every person, to attain certainty in the Gospel message, and to share in God’s love by embracing his love personally and becoming a vessel in bringing his love to others.

RECEIVE. BELIEVE. SHARE.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank you for always being

present to us in the Church which you gave as the means

for our salvation and that of the whole world. A Church

through which life-giving and sustaining graces are

poured into and over us by the holy Sacraments. A

Church which is truly your “body” here on earth. We are

members of that body, filled with the Holy Spirit and

bountiful graces, and compelled to use the blessings,

gifts, and favors which have been given us to build up

that body.

Renew us with your grace and the gifts of the Holy

Spirit that we may give serious thought to how each of us

can better use our time, talent, and treasure to build up

your Church and to love better our brothers and sisters

who make up your holy Church.

May the Parish of SS. Peter and Paul continue to be a

community of believers who are willing to spend time

learning about God’s Word and will, about the words and

works of Holy men and women who have loved

Jesus and his Church, and may we then serve one another

and our fellow human beings, in showing

them God and his Holy Church.

This we pray, dear Father, through our

Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns

with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one

God for ever and ever. Amen.

The Stewardship Campaign Prayer was written by

a Saints Peter and Paul Parishioner.
