    Puppy for sale

    “ Ding-dong,” rang the bell on the shop door. A blackand brown puppy1 looked out of his cage with his softbrown eyes. A woman and a young girl came into thepet shop. The other two young puppies in the cagewere playing and rolling on the f loor.5

    The black and brown puppy was nearly six monthsold and the oldest puppy in the shop. He had been inthe shop a long time and wanted somebody to buy

    him, but all the people who came said, “ W hat an ugly2

    l ittle dog,” and chose3 another puppy from the cage. This time he stood up on his hind legs4 and gave a

    little bark and wagged his tail. The girl’s mother lookedat him and said, “ W hat a funny little mixture. He5looks so rough5 with his black and brown coat.” Butthe young girl said, “ Oh, Mum, look at his nice browneyes and look at his wagging tail, I l ike him.” Hermother said to the pet shop man, “ How much is thisfunny puppy?”10

    “ Well,” said the man, “ he’s only a mongrel6, ofcourse, and we’ve had him some time. You can havehim for 10 pounds.”

    “ Oh Mum, let ’s take him. Dad said I could spend 10pounds for my birthday.”15

    “ You’ll have to look after him, Sally and take him forwalks and feed him.”

    “ Oh yes, Mum,” said Sally.The puppy gave a little bark and licked the girl’s

    hand. “ W hat’s his name?” she asked the pet shop20man.

    “ He hasn’t got a name,” replied the man. “ I just callhim old scruffy. He’s a very strong little puppythough7. Strong as a lion.”

    “ Oh, I remember that lion in the zoo. He was called25
