Maja VodanovicBorough Mayor514-634-3471, ext. 501

Dear Residents,

You are holding the latest edition of the Leisure Guide recreation schedule, an

excellent source of information on all the activities and events taking place in

your neighborhood.

As you’ll see, Lachine offers a wonderful variety of sports, education, recreation,

and entertainment programming. As always, the guide also contains a whole

lot of useful information, including a map of the Borough and a list of outdoor

recreational facilities, like sports fields.

Community Corner, for example, is an essential reference tool that gives you

condensed information about Borough services: our collection schedules

(including for organic waste), a list of the various permits and authorizations

available, the new rules for dog owners, and more. You’ll also find a program

of Éco-quartier Lachine activities and a list of the many partner organizations

making a difference in your neighbourhood each day. Since Community Corner

is designed to be pulled out and kept handy, you’ll now have a long list of useful

phone numbers and addresses to help you make the most of the many services

Lachine has to offer.

You’ll find hard copies (in French only) in municipal buildings in Lachine and the

electronic version on our website.

The short version is still delivered to Lachine homes and contains the schedule

of activities for children and adults.

I wish you all a wonderful summer filled with

your favourite activities!

Sincerely,

Maja Vodanovic, Borough Mayor

CHILD SAFETY IN AQUATIC FACILITIESTo enter a pool without an adult, children must be at least 8 years old and meet the minimal height requirement or pass a swimming test. They must also be famil-iar with the pool layout and obey all pool rules. An accompanying monitor (16 yrs+) may supervise a single child who can’t swim and isn’t wearing a life vest. In all other cases, the ratio is 1:6, mean-ing one monitor for every 6 children who are 5 years and younger and one monitor for every 15 children who are 6 years and older. Users may be required to adhere to additional rules to make sure everyone is as safe as possible in the pool. Pool su-pervisors are authorized AT ALL TIMES to reduce the aforementioned ratio, tighten up rules, and require swimmers to wear life jackets.

MANDATORY REGISTRATION OF DOGS AND CATS

Permits are mandatory for all dogs and cats in Montreal (see by-laws 16-060 and 16-065).

The form is available online and at all municipal service centres. • For more info: 311 or ville.montreal.qc.ca/animals

Animal Control By-LawThe by-law establishes certain rules of conduct and good citizenship for the safety of residents and the shared enjoyment of public spaces.

• In public, all dogs must be held on a leash with a maximum l ength of 1.85 m. All dogs weighing 20 kg or more must wear a harness.

• Dogs and cats must wear a valid City issued identification tag at all times. When pets run away, the identification tag often ensures their safe return home.

• Dog owners must pick up their pet’s excrement using a bag and dispose of it properly.

• Dogs are generally prohibited in parks, playgrounds, and public spaces, except for the following locations:

o between Rue Victoria and Rue William-MacDonald, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. o The park on 55e Avenue at the corner of Highway 20, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. o The park on rue Victoria at the corner of 40e Avenue, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. o The riverbank along the footpath from the 34th Avenue Pier to the borough’s western edge o From October 15 to April 15 on the riverbank along the footpath between 6e Avenue and 34e Avenue o Promenade du Rail between 6th Avenue and 29th Avenue

Dog ParksLachine has two dog parks. One is located on Rue Victoria near 28e Avenue. Access is for Famille Canine Lachine members only, as the group has been mandated by Lachine Borough to manage the park.

Open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. • Registration: 514-634-3471, ext. 517

[email protected]

The other dog park is in Roger-Richer Park in Saint-Pierre.

Open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. • Everyone welcome

Page 19: LEISURE GUIDE - Montreal

COLLECTION SCHEDULE Recycling • Sector 1: Mondays • Sector 2: Thursdays

Household Garbage • Sector 1: Fridays • Sector 2: Tuesdays

Oversized Items • Oversized items are picked up on the first household garbage collection day of each month. Please don’t put electronic items (TVs, computers, phones, etc.) on the curb—they won’t be picked up. Electronic items can only be thrown out at Lachine’s Centre technique (2200 rue St Antoine) on two special disposal weekends: May 19–20 and September 8–9. They can also be brought to Lachine’s Éco quartier (735 Notre Dame), to the LaSalle EcoCentre, or to any Montreal EcoCentre.

Yard Trimmings • Every sector: Wednesdays For buildings with 9 or more units that haven’t yet received brown bins, yard trimmings are collected on Wednesdays from April 11 to December 5. WARNING!• Plastic bags cannot be used for yard trimmings, even if they’re biodegradable or compostable.

Place your trimmings directly in the brown bin and use paper bags (bought or recycled) or newspaper bundles. Compostable plastics do not break down in the same way as organic matter and last through to the end of the composting cycle. Please use paper bags, cardboard boxes, or garbage cans for your extra yard trimmings once the brown bin is full.

• In an effort to contain the spread of the emerald ash borer, branches must be picked up separately. To learn how to dispose of branches, please call 311.

Give the Planet Some Room! Sort Your Garbage Every Day

The implementation of Lachine’s organic waste collection program was completed in 2017, so we can make better use of food waste and yard trimmings. Instead of winding up in landfills, where it pro-duces biogas and contributes to climate change, organic waste is now turned into high grade compost.

In 2017 alone, Lachine residents kept 1,658 tons of organic waste out of landfills through the organic waste collection program—a 60% increase over the previous year. Let’s keep up the good work and improve our quality of life, sustainably!

LASALLE ECOCENTREFor free disposal of residual materials, oversized items, hazardous household waste, electronic products, construction waste, No. 6 plastics (they don’t go in the green bin), and more, you’ll need to go to the LaSalle EcoCentre.

The service if free for Montreal Island residents (proof of residence and a photo ID are required). Limits for certain materials may apply.

727 rue Saint Patrick • For more information: 311 - ville.montreal.qc.ca/ecocentres

GARAGE SALES

This year, garage sales are allowed on the following days:

• May 19, 20, and 21 (National Patriots’ Day) • June 9 and 10 • August 4 and 5 • September 8 and 9 • October 6, 7, and 8 (Thanksgiving)

No permit necessary.
