Organisers Comments

I feel I should start by thanking all of you, many of whom travelled some distance to be with us today, for making Grace Dieu one of our most successful C4 events of recent years. You may have noticed that space to park nearly ran out, greatly exceeding my expectations and keeping up with the demand for orange was almost a task in itself! Sorry if you only ended up with water, but we made up some 40 litres of orange! I suppose the weather and the fact that it was the last event before the JK International, next weekend, may have had something to do with this!

Everything seemed to go okay and despite one or two early hitches, I hope you enjoyed your experience. I received many good comments on the courses, thanks for this goes to David Bray and Thelma Spalton (Planner and Controller), who kept the courses “on ice” from last year, but, thanks to foot and mouth, it was postponed until today.

Finally, big “thank you’s” to the usual LEI crew, the DVO crew (Roger and Margaret) plus family and friends (Mark, Jane, Daniel, Amy, Mick, Steve, Christopher) for all pulling together to handle the larger than expected numbers. I hope you also enjoyed your experience.

Planner’s Comments

Well thank you to all the people that turned up on the day. It makes all the hard work worthwhile and I hope you found the courses challenging. Using Grace Dieu school is an organisers delight but a planners nightmare. It was very difficult to plan suitable short courses, due to the lack of paths, the amount of detail on the map and the constraint of keeping you in Grace Dieu so you didn' t have to cross the road. Many people seemed to have problems with the Orange course but it was within BOF guidelines and is not really meant for beginners, especially in an area like this.

On the longer courses I wanted to start off with a bang. I tried to catch you before you got into the map with difficult first controls. Cademan is a dream at this time of the year, requiring fast but accurate navigation, and then I tried to lull you into a false sense of security before hitting you with the dreaded rhodos again. Don Moir' s map is superb, although much better at 1:7500, and the mapping around the rhodos is very accurate. Control 135 caused all the problems and can only safely be attacked from the south or from the west off the path. I thought with 129 - 135 on the brown course I would set some route choice problems. Even so some people decided to try their luck by ploughing straight through the rhodos. I thought the safest route was back to boulder 136, up the marsh to the path, left along the path and go in through the light green bit just below the knoll.

The decision not to use e-punching put more constraints on the courses, especially the Brown, but as 3 controls were vandalised on the day it was a wise decision. I could have

put a few more controls in at the end but I chose the most technical sites that seemed accurate on the map. Thanks to Thelma for her controlling, Andy for the excellent organisation and again to all the people who turned up on the day. Wonderful!!

Controller’s Comments

I was given quite a few unsolicited comments about the quality of the courses and this reflected the care and thought that David had put into them. Grace Dieu is a very technical area in which you have to concentrate fully (as I found out after a long day going out to collect some of the controls. Not taking enough care in the rhodos I missed them).

Unfortunately it makes it very difficult to plan the easier courses and I think David did very well considering the area. We even had to tape some of the paths which had become faint since the map had been printed for last year’s postponed event.

I’m sorry we had to cancel electronic punching but the area is prone to vandalism and we have lost a lot of controls here in the past (standard flags and punches are a lot cheaper to replace than electronic punches!) Luckily we only had problems with 3 controls (even the vandals don’t venture into the rhodos!) and I have only myself to blame for having to manually input the results after controlling all day.
